Hi Chris can I ask where abouts you are in the river? I used to fish the Taw at North Tawton and I remember it looking very similar
@Hennerz5 күн бұрын
I've just moved to Dartmoor and would love to get into fly fishing having only course fished in the past.
@chrismatthewsflyfishing77244 күн бұрын
Loads of rivers to explore, the season ticket for the Duchy is £90 I think, if only I lived a bit closer. If it's your first time fly fishing, I would recommend maybe a half day guiding or at least some casting practice before you hit the river. Fishing is fishing, but the casting action does take a bit of getting used to.👍

@chrismatthewsflyfishing7724 Thanks, I see there are half day courses available nearby so may need to give this a try! Wish me luck

New subscriber. Recently discovered the channel and living just across the border (Somerset) I'm loving it. As a lifelong lapsed coarse angler (don't hold that against me!) I'm in my 50s now and in recent years more and more want to try fly fishing. Lovely videos.
@chrismatthewsflyfishing77248 күн бұрын
Many thanks for the encouraging comment 👍 nothing wrong with coarse fishing, I've enjoyed many happy days fishing rivers and ponds with float and ledger tactics. My grandfather and father were both coarse and sea anglers before they were fly fishers ( I'm not sure grandad ever fly fished actually). If you're looking to try fly fishing, then perhaps a guided day where they supply the equipment would be a good start. That way, you could see what you think of it before spending too much?

Hi Chris, My name is Phil and I live in Australia and have been a fly fisherman for the last 25 years. I will be visiting relatives in England during August this year. I will be bringing my fly fishing gear with the anticipation of fly fishing in England. I have fished in many countries in the world but never in England. I have heard it can be difficult to access rivers and I know very little about the protocols to follow in order to fish. I am quite happy to pay for access and the services of guides where necessary. I would be keen to fish in Devon on a freestone and chalkstream or for that matter anywhere in England where I could have "the English experience". I have never fished for grayling so that would be something special for me also. I am experienced in nymph and dry fly fishing and more recently in euro-style nymphing. I practice catch and release and only use barbless hooks. I would greatly appreciate any contacts you could give me or any services you may offer so that I could have an English fly fishing experience. We will be hiring a car and touring Devon as my wife has ancestral links to the area. Hoping to hear from you, Kind Regards Phil.
@chrismatthewsflyfishing77249 күн бұрын
Hi Phil, and thanks for watching. In terms of chalkstream fishing, you will need to look east from Devon, but there are plenty of day ticket waters. These guys are pretty big www.aardvarkmcleod.com/destination/chalkstream-fly-fishing/ The river Frome is closer and has some good Grayling in it fishingbreaks.co.uk/chalkstream/frome.htm In terms of Devon, I would look at the fishpass app fishpassapp.co.uk/ Loads of beats across Devon and Cornwall where you just scan your tokens and start fishing. As you're going to be here in August (alas not the best month for river trout fishing) I would "head for the hills" and look at the Duchy water on the West and East Dart, provided its not too windy!! I don't know any guides personally, but these guys have many, many years experience fishing the Moor www.flyfishingdevon.co.uk/ffd-guiding.shtml The website is still live, so I assume they're still at it 😀 I hope this helps a bit, fingers crossed your trip doesn't find us in a heatwave/drought situation when the fishing can be tough🤞 All the best Chris

"Enjoy the process and the surroundings". Absolutely correct - you have captured what is, for me, the quintessence of fly fishing. Another feelgood video - Thank you.
@chrismatthewsflyfishing772413 күн бұрын
That's the secret Christopher, isn't it? All the places I fish I would happily visit without a rod and just enjoy "being there." "Piscator non solum piscatur" "There's more to fishing than catching fish" is often quoted from the fly fishing club but never a truer word spoken.
@ChristopherParkinson-Brown18 күн бұрын
A fascinating and absorbing video, delightfully presented in a gentle manner. Thank you. I know I sound old (probably because I am), but it is a pleasure to watch footage of a fishing trip that isn't marred by overlaid guitar music, where the presenter doesn't have to "high five" a mate after every fish caught and, best of all, the word "awesome" wasn't used once! Seriously, an excellent video, and I look forward to next season’s offerings. Tight lines.

Thanks for watching Christopher. There were three things that I promised myself when I decided to start this youtube lark. No loud music, as I much prefer listening to the sound of the river. No endlessly asking people to subscribe or like the video before they've watched it ? And no mid roll adds ( this took a while to achieve because you have no control over the add placement until you hit 1000 subscribers). It probably doesn't make sense as the videos that include all of the above get far more views, but for me, this is about enjoying the process. It's actually quite good fun👍 Anyway, awesome comment, dude, and high fives 😅

what a lovely bunch of spots Chris, here's to a great 2025. happy new year. at 20:04 was that some sort of hydrophobic powder?
@chrismatthewsflyfishing772418 күн бұрын
Let's hope the bees have a better spring this year. They came good at the end, but feeding bees in May/June is no good for our business! You're correct, the powder is fumed silica, which was originally supplied as "frogs fanny" from the USA. I bought a large tub of it years ago as it's quite expensive in the little tubs. I did notice in the video that I did a lousy job of facing it downstream as you're not meant to breathe it in. Must try harder next season. Generally, I try to just use kitchen towel, but there are times when the only way to revive the fly is the magic powder. It's surprising how often a fish takes after the treatment. Perhaps the powder gives a bit of sparkle?

"And lo, we behold a magical fairyland that shall be known as Devon!" awesome bit of video, loving the landscape, camera angles and plucky little blighters at the end of the line! Some tricky shots, there, I'd be half a box down on flies after a couple of hours! All the best Chris, good luck for '25 😊👍

Ha ha cheers, Dave, I think you'd do alright looking at the small streams you fish on👍 Dartmoor is a special place to cast a fly. The great thing about wild trout is that they tend to live in beautiful places. Even our more urban rivers are little oasis of nature.

Seasons greetings Davie, I hope to see some more from the Lothrie burn this year 👍 I had three trips out for Grayling, the first one was full of trout, second was cold and windy with just the odd trout and the last trip was a really beautiful late autumn day and I had 4 Grayling 👍 Alas, the floods came afterwards, and that was that. Bank clearing next 👍

Great video can I ask what outfit you use for these streams? 👍
@chrismatthewsflyfishing772423 күн бұрын
On this tiny stream, i use a 6'6" 2 weight rod but with a 3 weight line on it to load the rod with minimal line out. There is an argument that a longer rod would give more control, but I end up in the trees more when I've tried it. For all my dry fly fishing, I'm a big fan of thread furled leaders. This might be of interest kzbin.info/www/bejne/r33bZXuha7yIsLssi=kTM74_aR0XXuWZ5P

Cheers, Phillip, and a happy new year to yourself. Well done on the dour Loch 👍 we have some man made lakes around here, but most are stocked fisheries. There is a non stocked reservoir with some wild brownies in it, but the banks are so steep you'd need a boat to fish it, and this isn't allowed. I've had a few fish out of it, but it's hard work compared to the river 👍

Thanks Chris. I've been planning the new season as best as I can for the past week or two, buying a fish finder and an anchor for when I'm out on the kayak, and putting cheap flights and charters to Malaga and Morocco in my basket. It's only a few weeks until I can break the salmon gear out, and only a few after that until the 3wt gets a dusting off. I'm trying not to get impatient, so this was a nice wee surprise to remind me that the river will still be there. Merry Christmas.
