Just because the original author doesn't give you a definitive meaning on anything doesn't mean that whatever you dream up is suddenly the "real" intent or meaning because the actual real intent or meaning was never revealed to you. And for the case of One Piece Oda really hasn't been ambiguous with Yamato either, and we all know even if he did something unnecessary like releasing a press statement saying something like "Yamato is, in fact, a woman." they would still disregard it. That's what you get with these types though, they love taking liberties whenever given the chance, and they'll go all out on doing so. Give an inch they take a mile, etc.

It's not a mistranslation. Kaido and Yamato (AS ODEN) said she was his son, and used masculine language to refer to her. But when she stopped pretending to be Oden, she was occasionally referred to as a woman. No backlash, no correction. But the wiki staff insist on continuing to refer to her as male, and Funimation and Viz continue to use male pronouns and "correct" the language intentionally to have others consistently refer to her as male. Basically, they're pushing an agenda to keep her trans even though the Japanese version has made it clear that's not the case. But these are some of the same people who turned a manga about a gay couple with one of them being a crossdresser into a straight couple with one being transfemale because it's "better representation."

The thing about Yamato, that these crazies on Twitter don't get, is that this is a typical character type. Many of us have seen this type of character many times. The strong "Female Character" who grew up without a Mother, who is "The Son My Father Wanted But Instead Got a Daughter" type character. or the "Strong Female Character who is more Masculine/ Tom-boyish." Yamato not only didn't seem to have a mother, but the person she Idolized was a man. What's even funnier is we already have seen this example played out before in the opposite way with Ivankov and his "Hormone" fruit. Ivankov more than likely originally was a man, but he's feminine as he dresses up in Drag and is the "Queen" of a bunch of Trans Dudes that dress up as women with facial hair. It's odd I never heard anything on Twitter talking about that, but that might have been so long ago, before Isaw any of htese fvideos. In reality, Ivankov is one of the best and most eccentric characters I've encountered in my many Eastern Stories that I've read. It's almost as if... There is no "diversity and inclusion" it's just "we want everyone to be trans."

Unironically, there twitter NPCs understand Yamato less that people who barely know anything about One Piece. Yamato is "Oden" but not in the gender conforming sense she actually embraces the "idea" of what being Oden means: the courage, the stubborness of never giving up and an overall happy outlook on life (of which Ace definitely helped with) not to mention being a powerhouse in combat although it's definitely a Yamato thing first and foremost. Now why would Kaido call Yamato "his son" then if up until she decided to become the enbodiment of Oden she was his daughter ? Probably two reasons, the first one is pretty cool and the second one is...slightly less so. First reason is simple, Oden was amongst the few people in the world who could not only keep up with Kaido in combat but almost defeat him as well, as such he respects Oden to the point when Yamato decided to claim the mantle of "Oden", although upsetting because Oden was still his enemy even dead he respected him enough to acknowledge Yamato's claim and call her "his son". Second reason is....more practical I'm afraid, Wano is a country of traditionalism and as such women are not seen as fit for any position of actual power. Kaido wanted Yamato to take on the role of Wano's Shogun so he could control everything and hoped Yamato would be a willing puppet. So having Yamato as "his son" would be a move to ensure Wano's citizens wouldn't be enraged at the idea of a woman sitting of the throne. Did you never wonder why Yamato always wore a mask before meeting Luffy ?

And also I’m pretty sure Kaido said something along the lines of “Oh so you want to be Oden then? Well my dear son I’ll treat you exactly like Oden” and proceeded to lock her up and starve her into submission, heck he even crucified a man simply for trying to give her a loaf of bread. Those people "read the manga" but they apparently didnt read it bc Kaido clearly ABUSED Yamato and claimed she was his son bc he didnt want a daughter he wanted a son, this was evident from the beginning where he made her wear a mask in public. Isn't it well known that Japanese tomboys in manga use the pronoun "ore" to appear tough/strong rather than to identify as a male? I thought this was a well known phenomenon and that it doesn't make the character trans because surprise to Twitter Freaks other languages don't conform to English linguistic norms. This is a typical problem with translation as no two languages spoken or written have the same connotation or nuance. Hell you can even see this happen in the same language just take US and British English. That's what's always striking to me about Twitter drama and freaks, is that it is a small minority of internet users who have the least amount of grass to touch that tend to be the loudest and the dumbest.

But Oda literally confirmed that ages ago, twitter just ignored the creator. Oda literally has a ton of great trans Characters in One Piece, and I am not talking about the Okama like Bon Kurei and Ivankov. Yamato just isn't trans, she just tries to be her definition of "Kozuki Oden" which we do not know what exactly she means yet. It may just be that she defines freedom by what she read about Oden in his log book and therefore wants to be like Oden. She had a rough childhood and is most likely coping.

On the other hand, Kaidou calls her "son", because he probably wanted an son to be his heir...
