I wanted to tell you about Two HORROR Stories I experienced with 111 the non emergency service. It is more than obvious that the people who man these phone lines are reading the directions they have from a sheet of paper and have no real clue as to how prioritise cases.
With the two experiences I had I do long for the days where you could just pickup a phone and talk to someone more efficient. The other thing is I wonder how many of you have had an equal problem.

Sounds like my local GP. Try to book an appointment online, it tells you the service is unavailable and to phone the surgery. You phone and (if by some miracle you get through) the receptionist tells you to book online. I told her it says online to phone, and she says: "Yes, that's because we've shut the online booking service down." Well why tell me to use it then?

Your GP is closed on Sundays I would imagine, meaning she was most likely told to contact Monday morning , out of hours GPs are rammed with patients with little aches and pains, there are only a certain number of clinical staff available in each practice.. call outs and urgent cases will delay their ability. Sometimes, painkillers and ride it out until GP opens Monday morning is the best option otherwise you'll be making the OOH GPs the villains

Last week I was told by my GP reception to go to the pharmacy for an ear infection, told by the pharmacy they couldn't help, go back to the GP, This was without even examining my ear. It is getting beyond a joke. My advice stop allowing population increase to outstrip public services and educate the public as to what can be treated at home. Don't allow A&E or the ambulance service to be used for people not registered with a GP. Dare I say as most people did up to about 30 years ago.

My son and family now live in Russia, our new granddaughter being born there. Baby fell ill so phoned for help no equilivent to 111. What happened was an Ambulance arrived with a paramedic and doctor who deals with babies and children. When the baby is born and taken home the doctor visits the family and there after a nurse visits for as long as needed. 111 the biggest con in the NHS.

Exactly! It's one of the worst 'bloodless' injuries you can get in my opinion. I took myself off to A&E back in Dec '23. I'd gone 3 days in pain like I'd never known before, after a fall at a ice rink. I knew it's normally a' heal by itself' thing but, I wanted confirmation I'd not punctured a lung. I got co-codamol too... Normal painkillers don't even touch the sides with busted ribs. 😬😊

Two cracked ribs during lockdown, went to A&E early evening, empty but for me and one other person. Loads of staff floating about, luckily my lung wasn't punctured. Offered me anti-inflammatories which I can't have due to suffering anaphylactic shock a few years before after taking one. They didn't check my notes and rolled their eyes when I explained, allergic to codine to. Nothing they could do, not their fault, but it was the worst pain ever and I couldn't take any pain relief except paracetamol which didn't touch the pain! 😩

Eventually got through, thousands of irrelevant questions later was told a medical practioner would call me. Then the fun started, I couldn't understand her...... I will end the story here. I know crack ribs are very painful Andy, I've had this many times in the past. In 4 weeks after the fall you will be back to normal. Once you feel a lump forming over the break, you are on the mend. I found rubbing in comfrey ointment helps the bones heal, and wrapping a crepe bandage around the body gives some support and also helps relieve the pain.

I’ve been a nurse 25 years now, 111 is just a gate keeping service. A&E is well out of date, they need redesign. To have a separate A&E for serious cases and an almost GP like unit where those not so serious are directed to. This could be for stitches and the like, but hubs in areas of cities that deal with minor injuries to prevent unnecessary hospital attendance, much like New Zealand.

I went through agony for days that could have been avoided and could have died, you can’t get compensation so they don’t give a toss, if you complain they will just say we apologise, some of the staff the first couple of days were appalling the way they dealt with you. So the older generation, are now effectively bed blocking as they aren't fit enough to go home, but not ill enough for hospital care and are waiting for home care or nursing home places to become availble. We then get gp surgeries wanting appointments, etc booked onlune... Great if you have internet, smart phone etc and understand how to use them ( and can read the tiny screen) Too many managers, painting rainbows and not enough trained nursing staff A few years ago my GP sauce I had plantar fasciitis... My daughter in law went to Canterbury last summer with her husband and elderly relatives, one of whom collapsed in Whitefriars centre and they called 999 as she was not coherent, was wheezing and struggled to talk and breathe. FOUR HOURS LATER….a paramedic team arrived who didn’t appear to be in a hurry at all whilst she had sat on the ground with a borrowed cushion and was drifting in and out of consciousness. If it had been a stroke or heart attack they would have been calling a coroner instead. The lady had suffered a heart arrhythmia episode which had caused her to have insufficient oxygen and made her collapse. After 48 hours in hospital she recovers fortunately, but it could have been much worse. And doctors? Worse. 12 weeks to get an appointment at the Grange Practice. Better off calling a vet….like the CEO of Pfizer Albert Bourla…he knows sod all about humans but can fix your dog!

I am waiting to have my gallbladder removed and have very painful flare ups from time to time. A few months ago I had a really bad flare up and was in excruciating pain so my son called 111 for advice. They couldnt offer much help so the call ended. An hour later an ambulance arrived and insisted in taking me to hospital. The hospital doctor said they couldnt do anything as my gallbladder needed removing and I would need to wait until I was called in for the op. He was quite abrupt with me and said I shouldnt have wasted Ambulance and hospital time. I hadnt called for Ambulance. It was 111 that called for one.

I fell on my hip, on a Friday evening, knew I had done damage, 111 were no use and 12+ hours ambulance queues, Told them I would make my own way, managed to get inside, dosed up with pain killers all night and got a taxi 6 a.m next morning, finally was seen at 1 pm, no seats or wheelchairs available so had to stand most of the time, get my own drinks and walk myself to the loo. 5 p.m admitted with cracked neck of femur, didn't opt for new hip, cracks heal in around 6 weeks if you stay off them, hip healed well, but the pain is still 24/7 almost 3 years now and they are only just trying to find out why.. I refuse to ring 111 or go to A + E (which now stands for anything and everything and not accident and emergency) Dr's phone lines are down have to walk down to make an appointment, my Son made his appt on way home, 19th February first available.. how? if no one can ring, e-mail or text them, no queues around the block and 5 Dr's in practice are they fully booked for 2 more weeks. Local walk-in clinic from now on for me.

After my last experience with 111 when I first caught COVID and thought I was going to pass out or have a heart attack, I wouldn't use them again. Approx. 12 hours until I got an appointment arranged by some other GP surgery as they didn't want to make a decision, for a GP telephone appointment with my own GP. Told by 111 if my heart got worse and I felt I was having a heart attack to ring 999. I mean what is the point after answering dozens of questions to be told how to suck eggs. Total waste of money, box ticking triage nonsense to put the rest of the NHS behind a pseudo paywall. It was a massive eye opener to how alone we are at a time when you think help will be a phone call away.

111 are a joke. In 2019 I called 111 for advice in relation to pain I was in. I listened to their advice. The next day I called them again because the pain was excruciating and they advised to take pain relief. I said I can't go on like this and I said I was going up A&E. The call handler told me that I couldn't go to A&E because they did not deem my problem an emergency. I went up A&E, turns out that I had an infection, I had Sepsis and within hours was in theatre. I complained about 111 and named the call handlers - all fell on deaf ears.

Our doctor advised us to call 111 Tuesday 4th in the early evening. The call centre guy was pretty clear that a lot of the questions may prove to be irrelevant! That was after the recorded options press 1 etc etc! Anyway the upshot was that an experienced doctor called back very quickly and asked more relevant questions to the condition and advised that a Paramedic team would be sent to assess the problem further and then take the necessary action. They were brilliant so a shout out to them and they did a load of tests before taking the patient to A&E. Although very long winded, on this occasion it proved to be the right way forward. The patient is now in hospital making a slow improvement. Having said all of that a 999 call for an ambulance would have ended in the same result.

I've had the 111 experience but they do say at the beginning that ost of the questions they ask will not be relevant to your condition, which proves they are reading from a script. Unfortunately they don't treat broken ribs. Only yesterday I was at our local A&E supporting a friend that had an injury. This is now the ONLY A&E in Northumberland supporting from Berwick in the North to Newcastle 63 miles South and an area of just under 2,000 square miles, but to my surprise it was almost empty yet the media say thet are rammed to bursring point. Aaaaah mainstream media.......don't you just love 'em (not).

So pre Covid, I picked up my son from school. He was bleeding from his mouth. I took him straight to the doctors surgery. Receptionist told me because he was bleeding from his mouth he should see a dentist . I phoned the dentist. Had to wait a week for appointment. Got home rang 111. They told me a doctor would ring within 2 hours and not to ring back. No phone call. Decided in the end to drive him to A&E. He was now bleeding from his nose and finger nails. My son was seriously ill. He was diagnosed with ATP. He needed 6 units of haemoglobin. If I hadn’t taken him to A&E he would have died. The system totally failed him that day. Sometimes it works fine and sometimes it doesn’t. Always go with your gut. Royal Bournemouth Hospital have been brilliant with his care going forward. Especially the Jigsaw centre.

However if ic all 111 they can issue a prescription electronically to the pharmacy and off we go. At 22.00 hrs I recieved a phone call from the ambulance service by which time I was so angry that I said I couldnt talk to them. An ambulance never turned up. I got another call the next day to say he was in hospital, he'd been in so much pain he made an emergency appointment with his doctor but had collapsed in the street and paramedics had arrived and whisked him into a&e. In the hospital he was told that had he left it any longer, they couldn't have saved him. I tell everyone Never phone 111 always 999.

I went to A&E at the luton and dunstable hospital at about 11:30am a few months ago. I had a torn MCL. There were about 50 people waiting most just had sniffles. There was a poor old guy with a blood soaked bandage on his head and a couple of old ladies with tubes coming out of their noses. After 3 hours I was triaged and told to wait for the doctor. The guy with the head injury was looking more and more sick as another 20 people filled the A&E. I was on my own but some people with the sniffls seem to have their whole family and neighbours with them and would not give their seats up to the older people. Then the school PE injuries came in another 20 or so people but most were sent to the children's section. At about 3pm the counter announced that people would have to come back tomorrow - I thought wtf! I got a taxi back to my place and then went private. NHS is absolutely disgusting.
