It's crazy to me how this problem isn't getting more coverage by channels like GN, I know they've already covered it numerous times but the fact it's still such a widespread problem is crazy.

Well also amd cards have problem , and some amd has bios crashin and unstable. Right now as I can see cards that are good is cheaper cards hahaha. Like 3060, 4060, 4070 , 3080 no ti, 3070 no ti, 2080 ti , i think 4080 is The best now , amd 7950 7900 ... too soon to say but as far no issue. Cpu some content creators say intel has problem but sometimes small problem is not as big. So cpu 10k gen 11 gen 12 gen no worries , so wanna go big high end wait is ur key here , i think next year 2025 new graphics Come with upgraded connectors , and intel new cpu will also be amazing , check amd but as far as i can tell intel is still proven to be long run bang 4 buck🎉🎉🎉

Ummmm yeah man I just got a 4090 for an AM5 build. Haven't built a PC in 15years and I'm so scared man. I am poor and it took alot of time and hard work to get the money for this PC. It would be such a dissapointment to have it burn up because of an issue with THEIR power connector. I'll be using the corsair 12v plug that came with the 1000w PSU which I heard is a little better but heres to hoping!
@tombriggs53482 ай бұрын
I had to get one for work. One thing I made sure of was there was no tension, twist or force of any kind on the cable. The orientation of the connector meant the case couldn’t close without forcing the cables to bend. I used one of those 180 degree connectors, and carefully zip tied the cables so the connector was under no force whatsoever. So far so good.

I was thinking about the 4090 connector problem, could it be as simple as the pins on the connector are just a bit small and giving a high resistance between the plug and socket? Then over time, arcing & heat this gives a higher resistance then gets a thermal runaway. Or is it just the 4090's current and the connector is not up to handle that sort of current?

For the price they sell the cards, they should redesign those connectors. Maybe a phenolic body instead of cheap plastic or even ceramic. They can also redesign both, the board and the connectors with more pins, or thicker pins to manage the high currents.

I keep mine a bit power-limited just in case. Still is distressing that the vast majority of the cards you get are ASUS 4090s. Also it's a shame that they are all in on this. The RDNA 4 series is supposed to use the 12VHPWR connector too :/
@BreakingDimes2 ай бұрын
Who said that it's not going to use that connector
@Angriffsmacht2 ай бұрын
Are you now installing the 12VHPWR connectors or the newer 12V-2x6 connectors on the cards?
@TheFather_2 ай бұрын
12VHPWR, but it doesnt matter, both are shit, the 12v-2x6 has shorter sense pins and thats about it, they discovered that people are not plugging in the cable fully because the sense pins on the 12VHPWR are long and create some resistance when people try to plug in the cable, anyhow, the only way to prevent melting is to keep monitoring the 16Pin HVPWR input voltage supplied to the GPU and set an alert for that in HWInfo64, if it drops below 11.6v then something is wrong and will give you a chance to save the port from melting.
@NothingFPVPH2 ай бұрын
I think they need to make a water cooling for that connector 😂

What is the best way to prevent the connector from melting. Besides the "make sure it is plugged in correctly"? I had to have mine repaired. You did a fantastic job as usual. Cable Mod recall paid for repair, and I am using the new design plug, but I am still worried.

There is something I do not understand (And yes, because of my lack of knowledge hence asking the question): Why do you add mask on the scratch portions if the pin is already exposed? I.e. the mask would not prevent a short?
@TheFather_2 ай бұрын
i believe it is to protect the PCB from wearing out by those scratches over time, like those scratches might get deeper overtime and damage the whole PCB.

@MrGeneralScar20 күн бұрын
they wont fix the problem with that connector until they recertify it for 300W or ditch it and make an entirely new connector. Crazy how some designer somewhere thought that taking 6x 12V wires (from 2x 8-pin), making them half the physical size and throwing them into a new half size connector, while also doubling the power rating (2x 8pin = 300W combined, 12VHP = 600W) would result in nothing melting. Wouldnt half size wires and 2x the power = 8x heat possibility? I guess nvidia wanted a new connector type for thier cards to make it so they didnt need 4x 8-pin connectors and a full size PCB to handle them. I will never guy a card with that connector, its a dumb design from a basic electrical point of view. Wouldnt it have made more sense to use 2x 12V EPS connectors with an adapter from 2x 8-pin pcie per 12v EPS?
