Two big questions changed my art forever. For the better!

What if no one cares about my art?
What if I can never be as good at art as I dream of being?
These two questions were HARD questions to face in my art practice, but they also brought me to a place of freedom and radical self-expression that I couldn't have found with going to that place of rejection and discouragement.
I believe that what happens in your head is going to impact what comes out of your paintbrush. That's why I'm 100% committed to teaching artist mindset in my brand new school, The Heart-Led Artist. Sign up for the November intake of the Heart-Led Artist Pathway now at www.heartledartist.com

Dear Angela, thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences. I still feel frozen, paralysed, in my art journey. I have kept my art to myself….. yes I need to approach my me and my creativity differently. My new approach, courage, kindness & compassion. ❤

it would be very interesting to see side by side 2 paintings each that you think reflect your before & after your epiphanies. id think your changed perspectives should be evident in your paintings.

Thank you for sharing! I can relate. Just this past weekend I was outside with an ink pen, sun shining so I needed my sunglasses and I thought, I don’t care, I’m going to draw this beautiful live oak in front of me. Without my readers, in ink. I decided to just go with it, not worry what it would look like but just be free with it. It brought change for me, so I understand. 😊

Best introspective questions ever! You are the first KZbin artist I followed years ago. I still needed to hear your thoughts today. Thank you!

Thankyou Angela it's nice to hear that not everyone is confident in their art ,,so many times I have spoilt a water color by trying to make it perfect 🙄I did it yesterday and really I loved the first before spoiling it ..

To make something perfect, you must do the same thing, over and over, until it is industrial perfection and soulless. Great if you want to sell, sell, sell to Walmart but, if you want to bare your soul, imperfections and all, you must take the chance, nearly fail and realize that that is the beauty of the thing.

Oh, I could just wrap my arms around you, Angela, and those in the comments experiencing something similar. We are all different and we have to allow yourselves the room to express how we see the world. For me, just experimenting and watching the process unfold thrills me no end. I don’t care what others think(finally) and I can’t wait to get home and just play. 🇨🇦

What inspiring thoughts for all of us. Thank you for your honesty and openness. As an intermediate watercolorist, I find myself always trying to think “outside the box”. In my classes, I’m always trying to duplicate a photo, or follow the given techniques, in order to succeed…the success being a painting that resembles what the assignment is. But I like to try things on my own, much more abstractly, but I’ve never thought of actually painting abstractly, because I think I’m bound by what is expected. I guess it’s a discovery I need to explore more, even if I feel no one would appreciate my ideas. Thanks for giving me the “permission” to explore my own ideas.

That is the only question to persue, thanks for putting the energy out there to shake me up. I have found it so difficult to get past the ambition of acceptance, knowing it to be important. But a good thing to hear you putting all of that into words. Thank Hou😻

Thank you so much for sharing this! Everything you’re saying and describing sounds so familiar to me. I am so glad you’ve discovered yourself and found freedom in the art you do-which I love, by the way. I agree that art must be inclusive. Keep being you! ❤

I’m a perfectionist unfortunately, and the need to make perfect art stops me all the time. Thank you for sharing this. It hit home!

take it from one who knows... being obsessed with being perfect, whether in body or work of any kind, is a cursed learned habit. the sooner you can give it up, the happier and more authentic you and your work will become. i had to hit 40 before i stopped running on the perfectionist treadmlll. it was liberating, as angela says.

@@wynnelee1810 It took me even longer, but painting for the joy of painting and not for the result is well-worth the effort of recovering from perfectionism. I am slowly finding my way to freedom in all areas of my life. I am finally giving myself permission to be who I really am.

"Telling" is all well and good, but wouldnt your before/after work speak even more clearly - painting after all is a visual not word oriented medium.
