Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker attempt to take on the three pinnacles of Everest in 1982. It was regarded as an impossible climb...this is their story.

Why, because their egos led them to certain death - nope, no sympathy for vanity rock climbing is a selfish business, they were selfish and paid the price for it, plain and simple no one forced them to crawl up there, humans don't belong there for several reasons - one of the being, that the mountain is considered a godess, so every western corpse is considered a desecration - they get shown the same level of respect, they had, which is none

All Everest climbers need to check their hubris before climbing to their death.
@mickdonedee1
@mickdonedee1 Жыл бұрын
@vibratingstring How often do they check it, I wonder? I guarantee that very few would reasses at camp 4 on the South Col just below the Death Zone. Having likely spent a month of climbing and acclimatising to get there hubris has probably morphed into delusion and denial. The overarching thought would be, "We came this far and we may not get another chance."

@mickdonedee1
@mickdonedee1 Жыл бұрын
@@marcofaustinelli7010 I beg to differ. This was their first assault on Everest. The north-east route had not been successfully climbed before. Two days earlier a female climber fell to her death attempting the same route. One of their 6-man team, Dick Renshaw, had been evacuated for stroke symptoms caused by high altitude. They were climbing without oxygen. The northeast route is considered more hazardous because more time in the death zone is needed to make the summit. Even if they successfully summited, they likely would have died on the return leg. I think their previous successes and belief in their own fame led them to overestimate their chance of success.

@@mickdonedee1 You mention all ingredients of contemporary extreme Himalaya mountaneering. If there was anyone able to lead the way at that time it was them two and very, very few others. It's not that if you just sit and wait ten years, things become possible by themselves. Someone's gotta carry the flame forward. Cost what it may, sometimes. Having said this, in that world "you're just as good as your last climb" (cit. Joe Tasker).

Yep, even GPS didn't locate them. My son insisted I take an apple airtag with me after I travelled south to buy a car and go home with it. He followed me from the bottom of the M6 to Aberdeen city, not exactly Everest but when I told him my ambition on my bucket list was to get to Everest base camp, he almost passed out! He would make me carry a dozen airtags in case a few gave out on the trek. My planned trip back in 2015 had to be postponed as I fell ill. I never recovered enough to get back to the people organising my trip, to finalise the details. It was to be fully portered, camp set up at night for me, chef to cook all my food and an experienced professional to accompany me as I walked. I wouldn't be carrying any rucksack other than my personal possessions and the whole trip was going to take me a week or more to get there, stay for 2 maybe 3 nights, then return to the city and fly home on an open air ticket. It was only costing me £2k at that point. The airfare was separate. Now I can't climb a set of stairs without becoming breathless, so Everest base camp will have to be there without me ever visiting. If I did try, I'd be risking other people's lives as well as my own and that's not acceptable in my book for the sake of ambition.

Good enough for the Sherpas to send all their children to school in Kathmandu so they don’t have to climb…. Regardless some of them will climb because that’s what they like to do.
@ollie6133
@ollie6133 Жыл бұрын
Not everyone who has ever climbed everest has had Sherpas helping them. Pete boardman and Joe tasker were more than capable of getting up there on their own. It hasn't always been the tourist trail that it is now. Infact permits aren't being given to 'real' mountaineers on everest now because the last time they tried to climb a new route on everest they crossed some Sherpa's ropes and the Sherpas nearly murdered them at base camp. Since then it's been banned unless you're guided by a Sherpa. So you don't need Sherpas to get up there, they just have the market locked in their favour.

What's the point of climbing the Everest? If it's heroism or bravery, it's the most rewarding job of all, volunteering at various locations and positions, take groceries from food bank to poor people's homes if they're disabled accommodate their needs, but if the motive is showing off as an accomplishment, then they'd be impressing psychopaths who lack empathy, and if hiker dies, who's going to care?

I understand adventure, for adventure sake, but I don’t understand this Mt Everest addiction people seem to have, why risk your life and forgo all other possible adventures you may experience in your limited time on this planet? Is it hubris, is it for bragging rights, or is it just plain old stubbornness that keeps people coming back in order to say I did it, I peaked at all costs?
