*"And now, let us go home to die."* --Jeannot de Moncey, Governor of Les Invalides and one of Napoleon's last surviving marshals. 86 years old and agonizingly ill for the last two weeks, he begged his doctor to keep him alive just long enough to see the Emperor's body returned to France in December 1840, and uttered these words after witnessing the grand funeral ceremony and then walking with difficulty to the casket to pay respects to his old master. "O frozen sky! and sunlight pure! shining bright in history! Funereal triumph, imperial torch! Let the people's memory hold you forever, Day beautiful as glory, Cold as the tomb." --Victor Hugo, _Les Rayons et les Ombres_

I have a weird admiration for Napoléon, which is i don't think he is a good person but he is so cool i mean like really cool. How he improved France and became an emperor, though he was not coming from an important royal family (his family was considered as royal but it was so new) but still he had enough power to rule all of the Europe. You're not wrong. The War of the First Coalition was declared by the French Republic, but this was before Napoleon was even a captain. I’m sorry people… but this very romantic depiction of Napoleon is not accurate. Hear me out: my ancestors are from Corsica, where the Bonapartes are from and we (the Corsicans and the French) all have a lot of respect and pride regarding the man’s achievements… BUT… Napoleon also used his men as canon fodders, rampaged and pillaged countless countries, systematically raping women and burning villages to the ground just to make a point. Just Google Napoleon’s crimes and you’ll get the full pictures. It’s nothing to feel proud of, I promise you.
@TLOK19183 жыл бұрын
Correct, this (and my other work) _is_ a romanticization of Napoleon and the Napoleonic Wars--it is not meant to be taken as a historical documentary. Nothing you watch on KZbin is a substitute for reading a proper biography. I say in the description of my first video that I don't intend this to be educational material. I do it primarily for my own pleasure, and any other history enthusiast is free to enjoy my work. If you don't, that's fine. About any alleged "crimes" of Napoleon, if you care to point me to specific cases, I'd be happy to give my analysis (a commonly given example is the execution of the PoWs at Jaffa.) As for pride, I certainly don't "feel proud" of any achievement of other men--I can't be proud of something I had no part in. These videos are not my endorsement of Napoleon as a man or a political leader. There are certain aspects of him that I admire a great deal, and certain aspects that I dislike vehemently. Lately I've been getting a lot of this type of comment, and I hope I've made my position clear.
@Vee_of_the_Weald3 жыл бұрын
@@TLOK1918 Another concern is the amount of comments regarding the Muslims in France and how the far Right should come and take over and the “Napoleon would have”. No he wouldn’t. He was laughted at by the French when he arrived on the continent from Corsica (where he grew up. The Bonapartes are Corsican nobility) because he had a “foreign accent”. How about that?! Your commentators are calling for hatred and bigotry. YOU shouldn’t be very proud of your subs. Just saying.
@TLOK19183 жыл бұрын
@@Vee_of_the_Weald Amusing. I just told you that I don't feel proud (or guilty) for the actions of other people--only for my own--and your characterization of who is "far right" is of little relevance. I make a point of not moderating the comment section. Bigots and hateful people have the right to speak their mind. If their hatred is irrational, they make fools of themselves in full view. You are free to judge them, disassociate from them, but not forcibly silence them. I don't delete comments, no matter my personal opinion of them, _unless_ someone is explicitly calling for violence. So far, I haven't had to delete any. If you'd like to report people for "hate speech", that's your prerogative. If KZbin decides to remove their comments, that's their prerogative.

I was oscillating between "Try harder" and a serious response. Here's the serious response: "Napoleon Bonaparte was the founder of modern France and one of the great conquerors of history. He came to power through a military coup only six years after entering the country as a penniless political refugee. As First Consul and later Emperor, he almost won hegemony in Europe, but for a series of coalitions specifically designed to bring him down. Although his conquests ended in defeat and ignominious imprisonment, over the course of his short but eventful life he fought sixty battles and lost only seven. For any general, of any age, this was an extraordinary record. Yet his greatest and most lasting victories were those of his institutions, which put an end to the chaos of the French Revolution and cemented its guiding principle of equality before the law. Today the Napoleonic Code forms the basis of law in Europe and aspects of it have been adopted by forty countries spanning every continent except Antarctica. Napoleon’s bridges, reservoirs, canals and sewers remain in use throughout France. The French foreign ministry sits above the stone quays he built along the Seine, and the Cour des Comptes still checks public spending accounts more than two centuries after he founded it. The Légion d’Honneur, an honor he introduced to take the place of feudal privilege, is highly coveted; France’s top secondary schools, many of them founded by Napoleon, provide excellent education and his Conseil d’État still meets every Wednesday to vet laws. Even if Napoleon hadn’t been one of the great military geniuses of history, he would still be a giant of the modern era." --Andrew Roberts, _Napoleon: A Life_
@JLWestaz3 жыл бұрын
@@TLOK1918 His civilian record I'm aware of it's is somewhat impressive. Military he was a mess. Depending on how you count defeats you could say he only had 6. I count the entire Egyptian campaign a defeat. If going into Russia with 560,000 men and returning with 20,000 men and a postcard of Moscow isn't a defeat what is? One at the hands of the 6th coalitions and Waterloo (7th coalition). The point is: He lost the 'Big Ones', The ones that really counted for more than a battle. He was trying to dominate Continental Europe right or wrong, and freeze England out of trade with his European Kingdom. Ignoring the fact that almost no one wanted to be a part of the empire, thus continuous war. He failed miserably at his goal and would up on a rock in the Atlantic, probably poisoned by the British. More than one historian has taken the stance that it took 50 or 60 years for France to recover from Napoleon. He certainty threw away at least two generations of French youth. Neither you nor I can say if two generation of French youth would have done what Napoleon did for France. Sadly no one can ask the 530,000 he left in Russia.
@TLOK19183 жыл бұрын
@@JLWestaz His evident failures are known to anyone with a glancing familiarity with modern history, and you're moving the goalpost. You asked for a list of his accomplishments and achievements--I've provided it. If you don't consider those as such, that's your prerogative. I won't go into a debate about the goals of the two invasions he launched and the myriad causes for his defeats. I'll simply recommend readers to keep in mind that he fought the whole of Europe for twenty years, and that it took seven coalitions of the most powerful nations of the time to bring him down, mostly through attrition and sheer numbers. I leave it to the reader's judgment whether that's a bad general or not.

@TLOK19183 жыл бұрын
How many men of all nations died throughout history for the ambitions of their rulers? That will hardly end on any field of battle for as long as man exists. This side of Napoleon is no different than any other king, emperor or modern bureaucratic/political elite. An objective judge must evaluate each of these based on the _goal_ of their ambitions, in the context of their times. And such a judge of history would deem it unjust to load all the responsibility for casualties on the shoulders of one ruler while acquitting the other European monarchs of their share of the blame. Men died in the "Napoleonic" Wars not because of one man's ambition, but because their respective leaders chose to resort to violence instead of reason, just like most other periods of history, and because they chose to follow them.
