I would love to see a video on correct adjustment of morse cables and the correct wiring of the starter motor. My Beta gearbox wore out after approx 100 hrs due to faulty morse cable adjustment, That happened prior to my purchase of the boat so I am at the moment reinstalling the engine.

@@RefitandSail he must have done some finishing at the slip which goes through their caravan site and the engineers father had just cut the grass. I had put sacrificial plywood on the floor so he could pull the engine out and not need to worry about marking the floor, I had to ferry that and his much back in the dinghy, he left a real bloody mess. I heard similar stories around the yard.

Pleased you enjoyed the video, doing two engines at the same time is twice the work but only one lot of thinking/working out where things need to go in the bay. Rather that repeat myself I decided not to record much of the second install, particularly as that boat had a lot or work done in the previous videos covering engine removal and engine bay/stern gear repairs. Now I get to do some work over again! ;8>) I do have one question: Why did you mount the engine control panel inside the cabin? Can the helmsman see the tach or warning lights from the cockpit? Thanks again for your video series and keep them coming.
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks, the control panel has been installed where the old one was previously, it can be easily seen are heard from the cockpit as it’s just inside the main hatch but out of the weather. We discussed installing the panel outside but as the owner always sails with crew and the quality of external enclosures is “variable” to put it kindly we went with inside as before, as always it’s the clients choice.

Installed this winter Beta 25 to Halberg Rassy Monsun 31, now just waiting for propeller shaft seal, then I can finish installation. I need to study more about the fuel return line thing, which you mentioned, It would be interesting to hear more about the charging circuit, I have Victron agro fet battery spritter, but your system sounds pretty interesting - wonder if it's also possible to use with Lithium batteries. Thanks for the video

Not requested by owners, it can be a nice option nit it adds weight to the boat, cost to the job and it’s necessity on a small engine/boat like a co32 is debatable.

Brilliant stuff all round. I do not know if you will recall the details of this job but what was the customers thinking on the 80amp alternator? As I understand it that would be a useful upgrade if charging Lithium Ion batteries, but rather less useful on traditional lead acid batteries because of their charge profile.
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail 11 ай бұрын
Worth having the upgraded alternator with FLA and AGM batts too, especially if running an external/separate alternator regulator as you can get the benefit of the more powerful alternator.

really top class work you are an inspiration by the way, after watching your video on charging systems, I ordered the sterilng pro alt C for my 1977 catalina 32 fitted with a Beta BD 722 20hp ...when you got no charge, I immediately remembered the note on the instructions to add that ignition lead...just one thing I have no idea where to attach it to the back of the engine control panel...a little hint would be most appreciated Still name dropping your site everywhere
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I can’t tell you exactly where to take a power feed from because it depends which control panel you have but assuming you have a key type ignition switch that turns on the panel then take a 12v + feed from that. Anything on the back of the panel that is 12v when engine running and 0v when off will work for the a2b’s ignition feed. Hope that’s helps.

F51 duplex SS shaft (better than std 316), 1” dia, length to suit (different on every boat), 12:1 taper, don’t recall the thread or keyway off the top of my head but you would need that to match the existing nut and prop anyway.

Hi George, great videos. I have a question about the primary fuel filter location. I was wondering if there are any requirements relating to location, height in relation to the tank etc. Mine is located behind the engine and is extremely difficult to change - access via the cockpit locker and circus contortionist required to reach it. Impossible at sea. I was looking at moving it to a similar position to your video.
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
I think the primary requirement for me would be to have it somewhere it’s easy to access so if you need to change it in a hurry you can do so.

@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
Hi, fitting a Darglow featherstream on a co32 is a fairly common upgrade, I have done many. You prob want a 14” but the pitch will depend on the gearbox ratio and if you want to over-prop the engine to achieve higher speeds at lower rpm but at the expense of not being able to achieve max rpm. If you speak direct to Darglow or buy the prop though me a suitable prop can be sourced
@DM-tn6jd
@DM-tn6jd Жыл бұрын
George do you have a recommended fitting height of the diesel filter relative to the main engine fuel filter/pump, and the raw water filter relative to the existing water intake? I assume as close to the same level as the existing? If that is not possible, anything to be aware of? Cheers, Dave
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
The engine manufacturer will be be able to give guidance on this as the standard engine lift pump will be tested/proven for a certain lift of fuel and beyond that it will need an additional pump. Bleeding the primary filter is easier it it’s below the fuel tank but not always possible, the filter also needs to be located to it’s easy to access and service. I like to put the raw water filter just above the static waterline so that it’s possible to open the top without having to close the seacock so that’s a time saver for giving a quick clean and means there isn’t a sudden gush of sea into the boat if you forget.

Great video, great engines! Could you tell us, if you have any previous experience, your opinion on the Beta marine hybrid engines? Are they worth considering?
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
Thanks, I have seen and been on only one boat with the beta hybrid engine but not used it at sea, it could be a good option as you have no fear of range but you also have more weight both electrical and diesel motor + the batteries. I think a better hybrid system would be to fit an electric motor and then a small diesel generator that only charges the battery/powers the motor as it would, overall, be lighter in weight and probably more efficient.

And congratulations on almost hitting the 4k sub mark.. there's a great little channel called Sailing Mig that has some amazing work on a Nor'Sea 27 as he's preparing to take on a circumnavigation. He also tells some really great stories. He only has just over 600 subscribers and would like to get to 1k before he splashes in here shortly. Perhaps you would enjoy his channel? I think his journey is going to be amazing in his little strong boat. Kinda like a contessa sailboat and their well-known over built qualities.

Does the alt to charger with the B+ sense wire allow the alt to use the (programmable?) Smart regulator feature of the battery charger?
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
The connection of the sense wire just allows the alternator to see a voltage on the B+ so it will start charging, the alternator to battery charger then behaves normally and provides smart charging/faster charging (So it behaves like a smart regulator).

Hey there, thanks for the videos. Goodstuff! Can I ask you, why did you choose the 25 over something slightly smaller, the 20 for example? Thanks. John
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
These installations were for clients so it is their decision on exactly what engine. The 20 is plenty and many co32’s have that engine but some owners want the 25 as it can allow some “power in reserve” or the ability to drive a larger/coarser pitched prop.

@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
@@johnmaclean1322 I think on that boat with its additional windage I would go for the 25. It is only very slightly more expensive, only very slightly longer but you get a useful bit of extra power. I would also definitely recommend upgrading the alternator from the std 40 to the higher output 80.
