I love the 1oz.! Powdercoating them and running 1500fps with 36gr of HS-6. Until the 12S3 and WAA12 wads arrive I just cut the petals off the 12SL with a 1/4in buffer pad in Nitro hulls. Have learned so much from your channel, thank you!

mklean1-Welcome to the HLZ and thank you for your comments and the good word- Currently, I am loading 4 different slugs and have found AA hulls and AA12 wads are hard to beat (that was true for trap loads also with #8, 8 1/2, and 7 1/2 shot at 1250 fps). You can save a lot of money on 12 gauge slug loads-how does 12 cents a shot look compared to factory $1.25 a shot? Best Regards...

The 1oz slug is that specific length to fit into most standard 1-1/8oz shotcups.I personally prefer the 1oz slugs simply because 1oz is the standard for slugs(kinda like 1-1/8oz is the standard for birdshot). While you do gain a bit more accuracy with the 7/8oz slug, I personally(and many others) do not shoot slugs to that level of precision.

Well, this explains many of the complaints I've heard about the 1oz Lee slug. Long + not nose heavy = inherently unstable, like a regular bullet. I'll now look into the 7/8oz Lee slug more.

I just bought a cz1012, and I like to shoot pallets and slugs. 7/8" slug, the weight is at front, it use aero dynamic to keep head straight and not using any adapter. 1" slug is using gyroscopic focus to keep head straight. It needs rifled adapter to make spin when it is out of barrel.

ballzzo - Thanks for the comment, and that's some good thinking. We could accomplish that by closing off the key slot on the core pin and shortening the top of the core pin (or shorten the core pin to do that CG shift you're talking about and leave the slot - very simple to do that) Might try that after I cast up a storm more 1 oz slugs so that if I ruin the mold, I've still got a lot of production out of it. Appreciate the post...that's what comments are for...

As usual excellent video. I have a mold for the Lee 1 oz. drive key slug, and I was thinking of purchasing another one so that I could modify the original one where the insert makes the drive key, I was going to file that down to make the slug a little nose heavier and cause it to be a little more accurate like the 7/8 oz. slug is.

gun nut - no problem - just do google search on Lee 1 oz slug data and there is link to Lee Precision Instruction Sheet with full data for Herco in 2 3/4 shells 1 oz Lee slug. Different hulls, wads and primers everything you need. You cannot substitute data for shot loads with slug-not recommended-slower powders (like Herco) good for slugs. You can start with Unique 28 grains, work up to 30 with 1 oz Lee and older AA hulls/wad any primer, but Unique not listed in Lee data. Check pressure signs

spraynpray-thanks for your comments, it is a bit baffling - Lee could easily have designed the 1 oz slug to have better aerodynamics - the skirt does not have to be that thick - see the 7/8 oz slug. Extra weight could have been put into the nose - see the 7/8 oz slug. We like the hitting power of the 1 oz and the better accuracy of the 7/8 oz. But too bad we couldn't have both. No redesign on these slugs over the years. Best Regards...

Ben Wilkinson - Good slug castin' to ya...And when I look at my cast bullet inventory - there are 11 containers of 4 different slug being kept up in reserve there. As I shoot 'em, I keep casting to maintain the reserve. I've got more containers of slugs than my other bullets - perhaps part of the reason is the containers don't hold as many slugs because of their size. I just like to keep them on hand as when you load 'em 100 at a time, the supply can go down fast...Have a great day...

gun nut-it's the same chart on both-online 1) go to Lee Precision website the com not the net-see Instructions on left - see Bullet Casting-see Slug Molds chart is there or 2) google 1 oz lee slug load data - takes you to listing - then use Lee Load Data - Firing Line Forums - when you get there - see 2nd post Unclenick - he has the links right to the data sheet. Start with 10+% lower than listed maximum charges and work up - do not exceed maximums. Best regards...

bill84345-The 1 oz slug was a little less accurate than the 7/8, had more felt recoil, but a better hunting projectile. I'll go back and see if a 1 oz range test was done. There are four slugs in play here - the two Lees, and the Lee .690 round ball and the Lyman 525 pellet slug...I need to do a comparison on all of them, but at 25 yards and 50 yards, that's a lot of slugs . That's why it's so hard to do one video on all of them...Stay tuned, we'll get to that as soon as I do the 30/30 video

gun nut-none of us experiment with powders, we go with published load data that gives a start and maximum powder charges, but within that range, we try different charges to see which performs best in our gun. That's the safe way. Lee Load Data shows Win AA hulls; win 209 primer; Win AA12 wad,Lee 1 oz slug with 32-36 grains of Herco powder-start at 32 and load different charges - do not exceed the 36 grains. The 32 is 10%+ less than the max. You need to verify this for yourself before you load.

You talked a lot about how one is more accurate than the other, but did not mention the accuracy of either slug. What are the actual group sizes of these in your experience?
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 11 жыл бұрын
kc8trl1-Thanks for pointing out that distinction. My take is that these slugs are so similar to the Foster slugs that we just take it's use in smooth barrels for granted. The Lee instructions do not clearly state that these slugs are only for use in rifled barrels, and many more of these are shot in smooth barrels than rifled. I do enjoy them, and so far, my rifled Mossberg barrel hasn't lit up the scoreboard with them yet...
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 11 жыл бұрын
thelister4910-Reason no actual group sizes are mentioned is that shooting tests have been done on these out to 25 yards in other videos in the Shotgun playlist.You can actually see the group sizes in relation to the center circles that have diameters equal to the length of regulation playing cards.Groups are shot offhand so that realistically, 50 yard groups from rest would be double the size of these shot offhand at 25. Accuracy in your shotgun may vary a lot-your own load work needed. Thanks.
@FortuneCookie45LC

thelister4910-Our range has no sandbags, they give us these plywood cutouts to use for one point rests.So our range is really an offhand 50,25, and 12 1/2 yard pistol range. It's not like the nice benches that other ranges have to really bed down the guns on sandbags.There is no 25 yard or 50 yard rifle range, only 100 yards. So over the years, I have learned that if I can group the black at 25 yards offhand, it will group a bit better than that at 50 and twice that at 100 from a good rest (1)
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 11 жыл бұрын
mountainmandan007-You might check out the Lyman 525 slug for that 100 yard shot. It's a few thousandths smaller than the Lees and sabots nicely for that slug barrel. I've tried for years to get rifle accuracy with smooth barrels at distance with the Lee slugs and it's tricky. I think I found it, and then flyers show up. But 50-60 yards-dandy. Waited till now to get slug barrel (many years in competitions), so now I'm having fun doing that. Accuracy looks promising..Best Regards...

You could in theory grind down the prongs of the 1oz mold plug to push the CG forward in an attempt to regain that shuttlecock effect. This would of course increases the weight but that may not be a bad thing.
@mickymondo7463
@mickymondo7463 9 жыл бұрын
Think about how a badminton shuttlecock flies and how it is designed, with the centre of gravity towards the front, in the absence of spin imparted to the projectile to aid stabilisation the shuttlecock design is the most stable of non finned projectiles. Hence the smaller nose heavy slug being more accurate than the larger longer more balanced slug.

Those slugs are NOSE HEAVY> that's why they fly the way the do !! I shoot the one oz slug from my M1777 smooth bore .69 cal Charleville flintlock. they are accurate out to 100 yds. I get about a 6 in group. this is a built up 80 grains of 1F powder with 2F in the pan load and a lot of practice. They key in the base is to keep the base from collapsing in a rifled bore.If you can stuff in the barrel you can shoot it out !!

thelister4910-When it comes to shotgun slugs, I really don't go with group measurements. To me accuracy is when you fire five slugs offhand and all the slug holes tear one ragged hole whether at 12 1/2, or 25 yards. If it does that, it is good for hunting out to 75. and 100 from rest. Also, take a look at the accuracy of the Lyman 525 grain pellet slug shot from a one point plywood support.- I only had 14 rounds to test as I ran out of WAA12 wads. Each shooter has to fiddle to get best load

thelister4910-You are right, of course, if I were going hunting, I would travel to another range to actually shoot groups at 50 and 100 before the hunt. The 7/8 oz slug load will hold the bullseye at 25 yards offhand. And the 1 oz slug is not quite as accurate. At 50 the groups are twice the size. I could hit a deer at 100 with either, but not good enough to assure a humane shot - so I would limit any hunting for maximum 75 yards. But I do not hunt. The one holes are at 12 1/2 yards offhand

gun nut reply 2- my Unique loads top out 1350-1385 fps they are low recoil loads (still VERY mean against any reasonable size critter), so there is safety margin there. Lee Data shows powder charges in 40-50 grains 1500+ fps. I don't need that power. If I did, I'd load up those Blue Dot loads in Lee Data. If you stay in 1350 fps zone, pressures are no problem - it's finding accuracy that is the trick. I like my loads in my guns. Best wishes on your search. High end - Lee Data is good..

just my wild guess as to why they molded the skirt thicker, umm, G Forces!!! a larger, longer, heavier projectile will need a thicker skirt because the skirt needs to push more mass to overcome the static[potential] energy of the slug...and lead is a very malleable[soft] metal so a thicker skirt is strong enough[needed] to support the heavier slug at acceleration. also more surface area to distribute the acceleration force and stop the skirt from cookie cutting the wad LOL good video thanks

Hi FC45 ...question for you. So I just cast several dozen 7/8 oz Lee Slugs and own a Mossberg 835 with rifled barrel. Took my Win AA pink wad and proceeded to push the wad / slug combo thru my rifled barrel. It did take some moderate force to push it through but it went through. (No banging on the dowel but a steady, strong push) -- I'm concerned about overpressure when loading these for the rifled barrel. What should I expect when I do a push test. And any issues using other 7/8 oz load data with these slugs (ie: can I use the multitude of 7/8oz load data I find out there). Thanks in advance.

gun nut - Reply 1 - Yes, whatever you hear on KZbin, you have to meter it all past your own knowledge and assessment. My 7/8 oz loads would start 29 gr of powder and work up to 31. The 1 oz start at 28. If primer is overflattened, you have higher pressure. Note my maximums are intended to be safe. There are hundreds of combinations hull, wad primer powder charge - experiment in safety to discover accuracy-once you get it-no need for max velocity-the slugs does the rest.

Hi Steve can you use the same charge in 3 inch shells as the standard 2 3/4 shell if you use the same slug and wadd many thanks Mike
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 5 жыл бұрын
Mike Bagnall - Yes, you can. By why would you want to? You will need taller wad columns (or shorten the shell) to allow proper balance to any fold crimps or roll crimps you choose (the roll has more versatility, but there is a limit). A certain charge/wad/slug combo is designed for a certain length shell. And 2 3/4" hulls are common. Your 3" would be for pass shooting ducks. There are very very few factory 3" slug loads as they reduce tube magazine capacities and slower reloads. And, you would have to perhaps do major press / die changes to load your 3". Many many more 2 3/4" hulls are loaded than any other. Good shootin' to ya, FC Steve

imbadwrench I've never thought of doing that. I do keep worn out molds for spare parts, but that is like sprue plates, handles, wood handle parts, etc...but never considered switching out core pins. The connector that holds the core pin to the core plate is not made to be easily removed and replaced. hello, i see its and old video but the answer to your question at 3:21 is that lee probably had tons of failures of the wad stuffing up into the slug because of the prototype thinner skirt 1oz slug drive key acting like a knife at very high "mass times acceleration" situations [ the heavier the slug the more the force is multiplied against the plastic wad] LOL i myself would of kept a thin skirt in there and used a non flexible, under-slug, discarding disc... matter of fact if i was trying to get any of these slugs moving zippy zippy speeds i would use under slug washers or metal blanks or something to stop the wad from failing against any of the skirts.. love your videos ,thanks.

I notice that around 3:40 in your video you put up a note saying "shoot slugs through cylinder or improved cylinder chokes only." I was wondering if you could elaborate on that, I have shot slugs and .710 round ball loads out of my 12 bore shotgun a number of times and always with a modified choke. Is this dangerous? Or is your note only for accuracy sake?
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 8 жыл бұрын
+dandowning83 -- The other recommendation always made is to make slugs out of pure lead only (plus shoot them through C or IC bores only). The reason for these is that shooters will either purposely or accidentally shoot them through even full choke barrels... Happens with factory slugs also - Shooting through chokes is a safety issue, the pressures will rise and these systems are set up to allow all of this to happen without disaster, but if enough badness meshes perfectly - there could definitely be problems - such as a hard cast slug gets shot through full choke with a magnum load - If you can push your slug / wad combo through your modified choke with a long dowel, the load is OK to shoot, but the practice is still not recommended. Best Regards, FC

Are these slugs designed for rifled shotgun barrels or smooth bore?
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 10 жыл бұрын
MrTaco250 - the Lee instructions say rifled, but the design of these slugs with nose heaviness (esp the 7/8) to perform in smooth barrels. The Lee 1 oz is a Foster type slug (for smooth barrels), not a sabot type of slug (hourglass shape) so why Lee leads us to believe that they are designed for rifled barrels is a bit of a mystery. And I have found no appreciable gain in accuracy shooting these Lee slugs out of my rifled barrel vs my smooth barrels. Consider this, we are supposed to slip these slugs into trap wads (wads designed with split petals to deliver 1 1/8 oz shot charges on clay birds) never designed to be spun in rifled barrels and magically, they are going to work like peaches and cream? The only thing to do is what shotgun slug shooters have been doing for the past 40 years - try every combination that we can stuff into shotshells, shoot 'em through both smooth and rifled, and accept the best we can get...and that is max 50 yards (get closer) with reduced power slugs. Anything farther than that, we can cripple game. The real beauty of these Lee slugs is recreational, fun, and range shooting at 35 yards and in...and the economy beats factory hands down for that kind of shooting - for hunting, use factory slugs...Best to ya...

im loading these slugs using a traditional wad with the petals ww12 they make the slugs a tight fit to my bore to tight in my opinion im thinking of cutting the petals off.... what are your thoughts on this?
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 10 жыл бұрын
blackriflex39- What we want is the slug/wad fit to allow a long wooden dowel to push it thru the barrel - best way is to put end of dowel on floor and put the barrel over the dowel with the slug/wad in there - and push barrel downwards. If the slug/wad is tight, but still pushes through - you are in business. If you can't push it thru, use a wad with thinner petals (like the Lightning or Windjammer by Claybuster), otherwise petals will strip on firing = inaccuracy. If you use these slugs bare, there is too much play for accuracy as well. Sometimes, shortening the wad petals allows passage. Best Regards.

Hi can you load the 7/8 oz slugs into a trap load that had 1 1/8 oz of shot in it? Thanks!
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 8 жыл бұрын
+Brad T --if the wad that is used in the trap load doesn't have any interference, yes, you can. And the 1oz slug can also be used...this practice of producing reload slug loads is not recommended by the ammo manufacturers, but it has been done. Since I shoot trap, I use my trap loads for that. +Darrell Baxter -- AHA!! more clues to the swell case tightness -- if the slug is tight in the wad, it may be that the slug is expanding the wad as it is being seated. The slug should just drop into the wad without expanding the wad. Otherwise, the outward force of the slug being jammed into the wad causes the shotshell hull to expand and make chambering difficult - If so, that might be a bad situation to shoot those...I would not recommend that those rounds be fired - they might fire OK, but that tight chambering is not a desireable thing to have... Best to ya, FC

our 1oz Lee slugs are weighing in at .972, too much wheel weights mixed in.. would you drop a couple grains of powder when loading them. I have lots of pure lead but would like to save it for buckshot and black powder rifles.
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 11 жыл бұрын
dave12546-Thanks for your comment - I'm seeing a typo there on your 1 oz slug weighing .972. My Lee 1 oz weigh 440 grains or 1 oz. If you shoot only in cylinder or IC bore, a bit of WWs (today's WWs are on the soft side) in the alloy won't matter, but if your -2 grain charges are pressure OK, go ahead and put the 2 grains back in. Pure lead is best for BP and for shotgun slugs otherwise, but you can definitely use harder lead for your buckshot - note that Federal makes buckshot loads using hard lead, copper plating and nickel plating has been used to harden buckshot - hard buckshot not a slug and is fine going through barrels and performs better on game. You don't have to save pure lead for your buckshot. Better to save it for your slugs - that's what I do with my dental x-ray (almost pure) lead foil as in my recent video on lead ingots. Best to ya...

Not, because 7/8 is designed for target shooting, and is not heavy enough nor designed to be lethal. It will greatly harm, but not kill, unlike the 1 ounce does.

FortuneCookie45LC I just ordered a Lee mold and wish it was here already LOL. A subscriber sent me a dozen Lee Slugs a while back and up until then I was shooting wax slugs. Do you have any tips on making shorty slug rounds? I tried it with some cut down Winchester General Purpose target loads and it bulged the low brass badly. I was guessing the lack of damping by using a cut down power piston was the issue. I want to make something like 1-3/4" slug rounds. If you have a video on that already shoot me a link. Love your content. I am not a reloader...more of a repacker. I want to modify factory target loads. Thanks!
@FortuneCookie45LC
@FortuneCookie45LC 9 жыл бұрын
+Mountain Storm - I've made wax slugs, and shot them from all my shotguns. But I have found that they are problematic because they have inconsistent internal and external ballistics. The short range terminal ballistics are impressive though when you don't get uneven ignition or even squibs on occasion. If they were any good, the factories would be loading improved versions of those. I would not recommend the use of wax slugs for any hunting or home defense application unless desperation was enabled. You can do shorty shotshells - recommend the straight wall hulls you can cut down or use the Aguila short hulls. You will need overshot wads and filler wads and cut the cup portion off a standard 12 gauge trap wad and experiment to get your reloader to work with them - roll crimp is probably easier with the short shells. Modifying factory target loads to get short shotshells is going to be a real trick if you can pull it off. In order to do that, you are going to have to take the wad out and see if you can cut the over powder obturator free as well as free up the shot cup for the slug. Then you will have to insert the appropriate filler wad between the obturator and the shot cup portions - figure out the length of the shell to get a proper crimp and you're done. Could probably load a 2" or 1 7/8" shotshell. . However, I would not load them unless my shotgun was reliable with the Aguila short shells first as a test. I understand that the KSG shotgun loves the short shells, but others like 500s and 870s do not feed them well. BPI may have some of these components ready made, but then your costs go up. I hope this all works out for you. Best to ya... - FC

Hello Mr Fortune Cookie I wish you would do sum videos for powder many sights do not have data for the powders with different primers shells etc. etc. Also some powders are so hard to find and some of us just have to buy whatever is available for instance I recently purchased three types of powder alliant American select premium ultra clean smokeless shotshell powder, hurco smokeless heavy shotshell powder and, pro reach long-range 12 gauge powder. Im not asking you to buy all thees powders and give us the data for them but how about you give us an idea on how to start slow and work your way up to sum thing that works for us. Something like how many grains to start with and how many to never go above you something like this. By the way thank you so so much for all the info your posting for us i have learned so much from your videos P.S. if you would like a donation for the video I'm asking you to post please feel free to ask Thanks again Liz / Chris

krakatowa1- Of the powders you have American Select is a great powder for target shotshells using 19 grains behind 1 1/8 oz shot charges. It's also very good in standard to +P pistol applications. It's not as good for slugs as the pressure curve is too quick, but the 19 grains can be used in a pinch for 1 oz slugs with AA12 wads in WinAA hulls or Rem Unibodies - be sure to use pure lead for your slugs and cylinder bore barrels (IC is OK, but nothing tighter). Note again - reloading data does NOT recommend Am Sel. for slugs. Pro reach is for handicap target shooting or longer range hunting. No data for slugs - you might want to call the manufacturer tech support for slug loads if you really desire to use ProReach. Herco powder is a VERY fine powder for pistol, shotshells including slugs - for 1 oz slugs start at 30-32 grains of Herco and work up to 34-36 grains if pressure is OK. You can't go wrong with the Win AA12 wads, Federal 12S3s - avoid the Claybuster and Rem subs as they have ridges inside - bad slug fit. The Downrange DRA12 and DR-XL subs are fine. If you go to the Lee Precision website, or if you buy the Lee slug molds - you can get load recipes for their slugs. You will find Herco to be very useful.

krakatowa1 I got my last Lee slug molds just before they changed over to the new design. (The only slug molds you and I are missing are the Lyman Foster mold - one of us is going to have to get that one and do a review on it.) But I have several of the new Lee designs in pistol and rifle molds. Even though they look cheaper (holds down production costs), they work fine. Some casters hate the new designs, I like 'em because they cast very good bullets.
