Agreed 7/8oz Lee flies much straighter than the 1oz. Clearly evident in the high speed video footage on KZbin. I use kitchen matches held close to center pin and cavities to deposit soot and make slug jump out of mold like magic. No tapping required. I load them with 078 lightning wads from bpi at 1050fps with clays for practice and use at 3 gun matches.

Hot mold, hot lead, tap on bolt. I keep my mold on a hot plate before and in between pours which seems to help. Aluminum cools down very quickly and the mold is aluminum.

I have both Lee slug molds, they were the 2nd and 3rd molds I ever used, .690 RB was the first. They all worked great right from the first casting. I was ladle casting the first time, after that I was bottom pouring, no issues, I probably won't need to use them soon because I have 2 full jugs of slugs on hand currently. Highly recommended in my opinion. Good value.

I have the 7/8 ounce slug mold, it cast great slugs once up to proper temp. I have a whole box of Hobo Slugs loaded up to test some next time I go out shooting. Found a couple different tail wad designs to try out as well.

I’ve got the Lee 7/8. Good mold. Like you said, only whack it on the handle bolt and you’ll be fine👍🏻

I have one and I like mine. I smoke my molds a little. I have lee molds and if you take care of them they do a good job

Lee Mode are the best.I got several of them.Thanks for sharing your video You always have people that shop at the malls.And then you got people to shop at walmart

Morel of the story. Don’t hit the mold. Hit the bolt only. I use a semi soft wood dowel. Never had any issues.

Never hit the molds but on these don’t hit the back plate either!

@@unclejim2330 I usually cast with wheel weights. Would that be to hard or should I use my stick on wheel weights? I don’t have as much stick on ones.

Yeah this was my first mold ever. I did exactly that, and yes it bent the shit out of it. Done. But i was able to salvage it. If you do damage it, just remove bolt and take off the entire key bracket. Put bolt back. Flip over , move sprue plate over to block what was your cast hole , and cast upside down from now on only filling so far, you'll figure out it. Just drop and weigh. When done right Will drop consistent 1.25 solid shoulder busters , or you can still drill out bottom of slug to take down to .75 or 1oz

@unclejim2330 yeah I intend on trying. But mine was soooo bad I didn't know you wasn't supposed to hit it till it was too late. Any tips on. How to fix the key ?

I got the 1 ounce mold about a year ago (nobody had the 7/8 ounce in stock at the time) and the slugs do sorta OK (not very accurate) out of my Maverick 88…I’ve got the 7/8 ounce mold coming from Amazon to be delivered on Friday with my other Amazon delivery day stuff (their Presto TP is awesome 😅)…the mold was $27.88 from Amazon’s warehouse deals…ie “product’s packaging shows slight handling marks but item is like new” (I’ve always had excellent luck with things out of this source) but it was free when I used my points…looking forward to trying the slugs out…I’ve never wacked my molds anywhere but on the nut…and never any issues…I love my LEE molds 👍👍👍

I have the Lee 7/8 and 1 oz mold . They both shoot fine with the right powder charge and wad . . Honestly , my 1 oz load will shoot a 1 hole group at 25 yds . I agree , you can't beat on the thin flange and expect the mold to work right .

I have that mold and it works perfectly. You only have the cast 50 of them then it starts working right but I do like that more.

thinking of diving into the world of shotshell reloading--have you used the lyman pellet slug molds at all? Smooth bore? Going to pick up a couple panzer shotguns and will need to feed them.

Haven’t tried the Lyman but the Lee 7/8 is great using a wad and smooth bore or improved.

I have the 1 ounce mold and I'm sorry that I didn't buy the 7/8 ounce one. Accuracy suffers with the 1 ounce all I could get was a 4-5 in group with several of the loads and wads I tried @50 yards. you are right about getting too aggressive when tapping to get the slug free, you can't horse lee molds otherwise you damage them. anyway, good subject,, good video - Dave

I was just given A bag of tea slugs A bunch of holes Which are low brass Winchester super 8 and 400 primers. Different types And I have to be honest im A little over whelmed. Loaded several shotgun and several pistol rounds It's always all been straightforward even when I did a 270 AI I was able to make A load Working up. I did it 1 time Over pressure The gas bled through The Holes in the breach But the round could not be extracted without The barrel being removed And the gun store breaking the knob off my bolt handle 1953 Remington 721. It made me extra cautious. Remington 870I should have paid off in a few weeks Can handle a few Shotgun slug pressures But I don't want to risk it. I'm afraid I'm using the wrong wads primer and powder. Do I have to worry more with slugs then shot or vise-versa

Damn, make sure your hulls are straight or tapered to go with the wads and load light and work your way up.

Better to hit the handle as hard as you need than hit the mold. Lee handles are cheap.

I’m like Jesse, I’m just getting into shot shell loading. Bulldog loaned me a slug mold and a a bunch of stuff when he found out I was going to do shotgun. I’m still learning.
