What I really loved about this show was how it took us to so many wonderful places and showed so many wonderful aspects of British life including Gurkhas and nuns lumberjacks and lock keepers ..beer makers and barristers And that beautiful final scene in the Cambridge rowers episode as they float along the river against a gently setting English sunset ..Great memories , great ladies ...

You would never see ladies like these on the Food Network these days. For one, they don't look like starlets and they cook with far too much fat. Also they use cuts of meat and certain things like livers and hearts that are too (shall we say) "rustic" for the picky American palate. Can you imagine one of those guys asking "What's this?" and Clarissa saying "I picked it off the side of the road this morning"? An American would faint LOL.

There's a bit of truth to this. But I did watch these wonderful ladies on the Food Channel back in the 90s. They and Emeril Lugasse were the first two shows I watched when I got a Directv satellite dish and Two Fat Ladies were my favorite of the shows offered back then. There are a few Americans, like me, who will forage things to eat on our own. I've gathered morel mushrooms, black raspberries, gooseberries, mulberries and paw paws.

The bit about reaching 21 and having all your teeth taken out as a present is absolutely true. It did happen, but not just in Scotland. The 'victim' would have all their teeth removed by a dentist and once their gums had healed from the extractions they would be fitted with sets of false teeth - part of the birthday present. They were now set for a lifetime enjoying all kinds of sugary foods without a second of cavity dental pain.
