Going first was honestly better then going second in old Yu-Gi-Oh yes you can't do much but keep in mind going first player drew for turn so you started your turn with 6 cards instead of 5 so going second didn't grant you any advantage and you got the ability to set up with your flip monsters and traps

you could attack first going second so with certain otk decks like cyber dragon or batteryman id pick second but you are correct it was almost always better to go first

@@matija5748 Limiter existed if you got 3 As out thats 3k each i won plenty of locals with it and i def think 2nd was the pick, though youre completely right that they got way more support later (more for cybers in that time period with protos and shit) and more reliable otks BUT in the locals envirinment one kid had dad it was japanese and he was like 10 so it didnt matter and he had it much later than when were playing batteryman and cyber otk, its simply a matter of the state of power at the time you could win with lower reliablity shit also DAD released 3 years after the strats I mentioned. Dad got banned/limited really fast it only dominated like 2 years of top 8 to my memory.

One of my all time favorite monsters was the great mayu garzet. Lv6 fiend that doubled the attack of the tributed monster. The look some players gave me when they realise i tributed goblin attack force for this guy and now had a 4600 beatstick on the field. Priceless

Well if you're asking for a theme, I'd like to harken back to a roulette video you titled "Two idiots Summon Exodia" Instead off just one of you having an exodoia deck, you both will actually have one. But they'll have to meet a few criteria: • No FTKs. To avoid having the Duel decided by coin toss (literally), no making the deck retrieve all 5 exodia in the first turn (or within the first 3 turns) • the Win con is Exodia, no back ups *UNLESS*it includes Exodia in someway (likes using a few of its pieces, since you'rebound to have at least 1.) This is partly to avoid having a win without an Exodia price getting involved, and so you don't get "those" comments. However this one can be ignored if it's too much trouble.

GRAPHA! DRAGON LORD OF DARK WORLD! This is a card near and dear to my heart. I dominated the entire schoolyard meta with my Dark World deck. Master Hyperion is another one that I have fuzzy nostalgic feelings for, since it was my buddy's boss monster back in those days. If we're talking about LONG ago, when I was a very young lad, my favorite card was Black Luster Soldier. That was my boy right there.

going first in OG yugioh was better because you could draw on the first turn, giving you the advantage of setting up your field and having that extra card at the start. the rule was later changed so that drawing starts from the second turn and the first player gets the advantage of going first at the expense of that +1 draw

My favorite old card might be Rush Recklessly, the card that adds 700 damage and is a quick-play spell. Saved me many times by catching people off guard with the battle phase flip up when they were attacking. That or Elemental Hero Sparkman.

Also I wasn't even talking about modern competitive game (which differs from one format to another, sometimes being incredibly diverse and enjoyable and other times devolving into exactly what you described). The question isn't about what's better (both eras suck), it's about two friends playing casually for the sake of entertainment. I dunno about you, but I would've been pleasantly surprised if instead bringing Blue-Eyes or DM or Egyptian Gods for the millionth time they played pure Melfy or Springans or, hell, even Ojama Armed ABC for maximum jank. What would be fun is if you tried doing anime duels of different eras. So I know you like your Duel Monsters stuff, I see you three trying GX stuff too, possibly 5D's if you're feeling it but Zexal, Arc-V & Vrains are all untapped potential. Like you can have a Number Card duel, Pendulum duels (You'd love Endymion) or even the really competitively viable Vrains decks like Code Talker, Salamangreat, marincess, Ignister, Rokket, etc.
