That 1799 coin is so well preserved that you may be able to see, on that slanting bar above the second 9, the word SOHO, showing that it was made at Matthew Boulton's works in Birmingham.

The silver coin was nice, but that large George III was the best find so far, for me. And that first brass thing you found I think is part of a door, not a tractor part. It goes on the door over the latch.

First thought is that the naval badge has a Queen Victoria crown at the top. Certainly does not appear to be a King's crown, so is probably much older than you think.

What we learn about those fields is amazing. Every time you find a field full of muscat balls is an indication that there was a skirmish fought on those fields hundreds of years ago. it's always great to see Simon out with you, he's such a good spirited man with a perpetual smile, he's also a true gentleman. The coins you were uncovering were pretty outstanding, and you finally got back into finding a silver coin, well done. I would love to see you unearth a gold coin soon, you deserve it!

Too funny. First thing I thought was, "Why doesn't Simon have a hat? It has to be cold in Perthshire in Febuary." Yes, two fine coins. And I liked the KG1 too. Even though it's pretty crusty. That iron chunk looks like what we in the U.S. call pig iron. It was a cottage industry where locals would process low quality ore and sell the iron to larger steel producers. They called it that because the sprues leading to the molds looked like a sow's teet's. Thanks John. Cheers

Your George III Half Penny from 1799 is really nice, considering that it's pure copper. You can determine for sure if it's a half penny or a penny by the weight.

Your first find there, the slate marker for writing. .........That could be very old, possibly even pre-Roman (I'd look that up though as I could be pulling that out of my arse). ........But, conversely, I'm fairly sure I remember a documentary mentioning that they were used in this little old parish school up-country in Wales as late as the 1950's to the 1960's. Parts of Scotland could also fall into that "government-ignored" category.

The 1797 half penny weighs half an ounce or 12.19g, with a diameter of 30.20mm. The 1797 penny weighs one ounce or 28.3g, with a diameter of 36mm. Matthew Boulton of the Soho Mint in Birmingham, England, struck these 'cartwheel' coins on the new steam press. His initial contract was for 480 Tonnes of Copper Pennies and 20 Tonnes of Copper Two Pennies. All the coins were struck between 1797-1799, but all dated 1797.
