We're coming up on julep season - so I'm going to show you how to make two mint juleps! These days the standard bourbon mint julep is what most people think of, but juleps have been around long before bourbon and mint were involved. For those who are looking to venture out from the classic mint julep, I want to share with you the prescription julep too! This recipe has cognac and rye whiskey as a base, and is equally delicious and refreshing. Try them both and you be the judge which julep is your favorite! Cheers!

I know from reading plenty of old medicinal recipes herbs, spices, Juices, plenty types of sugars and sugar syrups and plenty of different type alcoholes were used instead of medicine... a genuine: Would juice from any of the Citrusfruit make it better? What would be the effect of Lime juice on this particular drink?

I recently made a Mint Julep with homemade Orgeat (your recipe-ish) instead of the simple syrup that Diffords called for. Also, their recipe has 1 dash of bitters. The combo was absolutely delightful: the subtle hints of almond and orange married so well with the bourbon and the addition of bitters added depth. Orgeat rocks!

I'm really digging your content, thank you so much for all the hard work, it really shows in the quality of your videos. I do want to comment that you didn't mention the tradition of holding the julep cup just by the bottom to allow for the maximum amount of frost to form on the rest of the cup. It certainly doesn't change the flavor of the drink, it just adds to the cultural background of it and I do think that makes things tastier. I can't wait to chainsaw through the rest of your content! Soooo. A few years ago the Mint Julep became my drink of choice, simply because it was my favorite Ray Charles song in my early 20's and I just had to know what one was. I found a recipe online, made it, and loved it. It is sweet, but then again, I always enjoyed drizzling whisky on ice cream.. so no shocker there that I like a sweet concoction. I used silver plated julep cups which always rusted and weren't worth the $ I spend on them. So I eventually got the real deal: Sterling silver cups. Boy what a difference, even in taste. You gotta use Sterling silver to bring out the best in this drink- lol I guess u could say, THERE'S your Bitters! And u can't drink anything else out of these cups...too metallic tasting. But yeah Sterling silver is the key. I also make my own mint syrup. The recipe I use calls for rubbing the inside of the cup with a mint leaf, then filling it with crushed ice, then drizzle 2 tbsp mint syrup and 2 oz bourbon...though I've used crown royal in a pinch and liked it just as well...though it is a different drink with Canadian whisky... and cut the straw to just an inch above the cup rim to bring your nose close to it. And of course stick a few mint leaves in for garnish. That seemed like a lot of words...

Brandy juleps predate bourbon juleps. Peach brandy was also added to the brandy julep. It makes one wonder if if the peach brandy they were referring to was brandy made from peaches, or a peach cordial, or liqueur. The Savoy cocktail book (1930) goes into great detail about what it calls the real mint julep. It is said to be equal parts of peach and common brandy poured over the mint, and sugar all ready in the tumbler. It also mentions the possibility of rubbing pineapple across the rim of the tumbler. Curiously, this recipe was said to be the true mint julep, yet they had another recipe called the Southern mint julep. This recipe uses bourbon, rye, or Canadian whiskey (what have you), the only real difference between your recipe and that one is that, it uses plain white sugar rather than a syrup. Theoretically the sugar being granulated would help with the muddling of the mint. A champagne julep was also present in the book as well as a few other variants. If I remember right there is other cocktail books from the 1920s, and 1930s that ask for the brandy but also ask for a dash of Jamaican rum...?... I suppose the most accurate account of the how the original julep was made would have came from a bar manual, or cocktail guide from the 1800's, rather than the early to mid 20th century. I do know that it was made with brandy though and not with bourbon.
@leviturner3265
@leviturner3265 2 жыл бұрын
Curiously the book, "Burke's Complete Cocktail and Tastybite Recipes" (1936) has a recipe titled Southern Mint Julep. This recipe is made from brandy, and does ask for a dash of rum as well. It also mentions putting a little sugar on top after adding the ice, in addition to the sugar all ready used in the muddling of the mint, and suggests adding the fruit that is in season as well. The recipe in the same book listed as Whiskey Mint Julep asks for Irish whiskey, or rye whiskey. No mention of bourbon. This could perhaps be because prohibition had just ended 2 years prior, however. The book does ask for bourbon in other recipes, though. So this is unlikely the reason why.

My female cat would always jump up on the end bar stool 2 hours before dinner and stare me down. I used to joke "One Mint Julep coming up Ma'am" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I still ask her that as I get dinner ready now. Where do you get so much fresh mint? None of the grocery stores around me seem to have more than tiny plastic packs of mint. Do you just have to grow it?
@AaronGallagher
@AaronGallagher 2 жыл бұрын
Where do you buy your mint? I find it difficult to find good mint sprigs at grocery stores. The best I’ve found around my area was at a Japanese grocery called Uwajimaya which is an excellent spot.

Hello Anders, the julip cups are no longer available on your amazon marketplace. Could you put some new ones up, so that I can buy them from yours?

Looking forward to my mint coming back (I have a s#!t ton of it, can't kill the stuff!) So I can try these, as well as your version of mojitos, and anything else mint might work in (ideas?) If you need mint, hit me up! I've got plenty to spare from about May til first killing frost!

@@AndersErickson sorry the question, from your perspective would a vanilla syrup be a nice substitute for the sugar to add flavour or would be too much and cute the freshness from the mint? I'm no professional, just a home enthusiast, still learning
@AndersErickson
@AndersErickson 3 жыл бұрын
@@lucaspaciencia2414 great question! I think a vanilla syrup could work well - especially with the bourbon. Although the prescription julep has more components, I find the flavors to be a bit more subtle than the bourbon julep - so vanilla could potentially take over in that one. Definitely worth trying in both though. You could stumble upon the next big thing!
