What is the function of the white filter,unwanted sounds filter? The dome appears to keep dirt out?

The White Filter is a wax filter it helps prevent ear wax from entering the hearing aid receiver

My Phonak hearing aid was acting up for the first time after having the aid for 90 days. I had a notion that perhaps it was time for a filter change and now things are back to normal. Now that I found out that this may be a recurring event, I will set up a schedule to change the filter every 12 weeks or 84 days or sooner if the unit "cries wolf". I find if I rub my finger on the back end of the hearing aid including over the back button and it can be heard by that ear, it means the new filter did the trick, if right before you didn't hear anything rubing your finger over the same area. proving the old filter needed replacing. Contact your hearing aid specialist for their professional input, I am only telling you of a specific event where a filter change seemed to do the trick.

Why wouldn't you replace the dome while you have it off? They are free from the VA, and low cost in the real world.
