I recently spent two days in Stockholm, Sweden's capital, as part of a quick trip to Finland. Sweden was the only Scandinavian country I hadn’t visited, so I was excited to explore. Here's how I made the most of my time.
Day 1 Highlights:
After arriving via the Arlanda Express, I checked into my hotel and headed straight to the Nobel Prize Museum in the charming Gamla Stan (Old Town). Gamla Stan’s cobblestone streets and narrow alleys are packed with history, including Stortorget Square and quirky sights like Mårten Trotzigs Grand, Stockholm’s narrowest street, and the city’s smallest statue, the Iron Boy.
For dinner, I indulged in Swedish classics: prawns, crayfish, and meatballs with lingonberries. Stockholm’s energy was palpable with street music and lively crowds-perfect for ending the day with churros!
Day 2 Adventures:
After breakfast, I explored Stockholm’s renowned Subway Art. My favorites were Stadion with its vibrant rainbow art and Solna Centrum, depicting a forest sunset. I then enjoyed lunch at Östermalm Saluhall, a historic food hall, where I tried different types of herring.
In the afternoon, I took a Stockholm Archipelago tour. This vast natural wonder features 30,000 islands, from tiny rock formations to larger, inhabited islands. After a Fika (coffee break), I joined in the lively Stockholm Culture Festival, which featured street performances, live music, and dancing.
Day 3 Adventures
Before heading to the ferry for Helsinki, I visited Per Albin Houses, an iconic example of Swedish functionalism. My trip concluded with a classic lunch of Swedish meatballs at IKEA.
Overall, Stockholm was an unforgettable, vibrant city. English is widely spoken, and with its cashless society and free Wi-Fi, it's easy to navigate. I loved every moment and hope to return for a longer visit.
