In the 1930's Schwinn gave up on their sales for the Henderson Motor cycles because every gas powered vehicle saw sales drop from the depression . They focused on the bicycles but WW2 hurt them as well , but they did produce their pre-War Schwinn/Henderson DX based on a retro look for their Motor cycle days. That's why the fake gas tank look was used for that Motor Bike look that kids would like, they also built a " BikeLock" feature in the front forks and neck that locked the steering much like the modern Motor cycles do. These bike weren't cheap . But the 1960's saw the Tariffs lifted on foreign bike from Britain and Schwinn started to sell them through private stores to reduce the costs for Schwinn only retail shops that didn't have the sales to stay alive. In the Movie Back To The Future we see Dr.Brown buy a really nice Cruiser Schwinn while their is also a Schwinn shop on the main st among the common stores you would see in 1955.

@@awesomeone2979 now the ultimate Schwinn Phantom would be the 1956 Schwinn blue Phantom boys bike I've only seen just one at a swap meet and bicycle show 30 years ago not repainted but I fully original bike I remember seeing this bike down in Southern California and I believe the guy was out of state when he bought the bike out of his trailer along with various other balloon tire bicycles I tried to get this bike from this guy by offering him $3,500 but he refused didn't budge on the deal I couldn't blame him so I settled for a very early the Holy Grail of a post-war bike was made in January of 1946 a Schwinn B6 autocycle that was very immaculate like you would have seen in a museum hardly ever ridden and it had front and rear drum brakes and an old Stewart Warner speedometer and it had all the accessories in goodies you can imagine and still this day I still have that old bicycle I would rate this museum piece from 1 to 10 a absolute 10.

Why do so many folks struggle with basic economics? If you sell to a pawn shop you will get less than retail because its cash now, no advertising, auction fees or waiting months to find the right collector. When the pawn shop employee tells you they're taking a risk, they are! The item might sit for weeks, months or years until the right person comes in and each month (or quarter) the shop is obligated to pay taxes on their inventory. You as a seller make a choice; unload the item quick and simple or wait. If you have something that might do well at auction please keep in mind there is a 20 - 30% auction fee that you'll pay before the auction house pays you from the sell.

That was a heck of a good price for the seller. If it weren't for the "show", a pawnshop could never make money paying $3k. I think a typical P-S would have offered $600 for the pair. I have an original Phantom & Panther and paid a fraction of that, without even bargaining. My gorgeous Green Plantom was bought in May 2019.

Not with this Coronavirus now people have cabin fever and if they have bicycles like this they're now selling for less than 2002 $1,800 a piece now unless you have a mint condition let's say 1949 or 1950 Phantom that's fully documented that's got all the original paperwork never been ridden just maybe just maybe you may get $3,200 for a bike but that has to be dealer prepped let's say what the front large flange front brake and a large flange rear drum brake setup on a bike like that with all the bells and whistles you might command $3,500 for a bike like that if it's an absolute Mint Condition right down to the original are in the tubes it's still not going up in price not for a while I've seen these bikes now going for less than $2,500 I know what I'm talking about I've been collecting old bikes like this for a while now I'm seeing that I now have to hang on to a couple of old bikes but I'm losing my shirt but other than that this is what the bicycle hobby is all about and now for my observance I'm seeing people given these bikes a little bit of patina aging I'm a little bit to make them original and trying to command big bucks on websites like eBay and Craigslist now if they did not make the reproduction bicycles back in 1995 now don't get me wrong I've got a couple myself that were built in 1995 they really look nice and a right nice but if they didn't build them yes I can see the original Phantoms go for at least maybe $4,500 to maybe just maybe a little over $5,000 but they don't command that kind of money sorry to say that even goes for the Schwinn Panther does not command that kind of money even if it was dealer prepped by a bicycle dealer back in let's say 1950 with bells and whistles now that now that I've got this off my chest all I can say to you folks is Happy Hunting and have fun with this Hobby it's only a hobby not a money maker.

Why don’t these people just sell them on the internet they’ll make more money then pawning them
@BrewPub

Because this is a contrived show. This is all staged for TV, to give the show some material. I am not doubting the Pawn shop bought the bikes, but the guy probably got paid a lot more money than what was mentioned on TV.

$3,000 was a steal for the pair if in fact both bikes are entirely original in parts and no repo parts. My 1972 Apple Krate disk original paint and NOS tires and Accessories is worth near that price.

They were taken on this deal. My close friend and one of the best bicycle collectors, spoke with the old man while visiting, and showed the old man that nearly every part was a repop and not original. The old man was upset that hos shop was scammed.

sl1950 sl1950 a pawn shop resell the items they get... of course they're going to lowball so that they can turn a profit. If the dude selling it wanted to get the full value of what they're worth he would go through the trouble of selling it himself.
