The new rail looks very strong, and the polypropylene cord is a very good addition. I may use the polypropylene cord idea on a stainless steel grab rail for the steps to the front door. My wife is not so stable going up and down the steps these days. We have just had a very cold snap in eastern PA so we need something to help with the extreme cold or heat in the summer. Instead of epoxying the ends on, consider drilling through holes for bolts and using the Nord-lock locking washers you like. Much easier to remove if something got damaged over time. This may require a machined spacer so the lock washer goes against a flat surface. I can machine such spacers, I just need dimensions. Perhaps spacers and lock washer at the head of the bolt and one at the nut so both ends are prevented from spinning. I have lots of 6061 aluminium on hand. Dave.

On you handrail - if you drill holes through the tube where the grub screws touch, you could replace them with longer bolts. You would have the security of knowing you have a positive engagement, and longer bolts would be far less likely to go unnoticed if they did work loose - but you would still be able to disassemble them if required - even it it is only to salvage the parts if you change your mind. Any old paint also makes a convenient thread locking compound 😄👍

I was going to suggest "why not use LiFePO4 batteries for much more capacity per unit mass and better charge/discharge performance," but I suppose part of your strategy here is "actually, the more mass we have at a place closest to Alan's keel, the better off we are from a stability perspective?"

Sorry this is off topic but watching the little Phillips #2 bit that was waiting to grow up into an adult made me wonder if you’d thought of getting a 150mm size? Pack of 10 from reputable companies on line are quite cheap. You can then see where the pointy bit goes more easily.

Hi Alex, being a dummy when it comes to lead carbon batteries, can you just fit a new battery with batteries that have been used over the past whatever years without repercussions like what happens with lead acid batteries, where with lithium you can put batteries of almost any age together without any dramas at all. I hope you understand my gobblygoop mate. Seeya Rob
@AlexHibbertOriginals
@AlexHibbertOriginals 5 ай бұрын
You should try and keep groups of batteries as matched as possible in terms of age. Obviously in charge state, size, capacity etc too. But, these have been used so gently and so little (I'm usually on AC shore) that I'm not worried. I've never deep discharged them.

I’m not sure how hard these are to come by but have you considered nickel-cadmium batteries? More energy dense than lead-carbon and less picky about how they’re charged.
@AlexHibbertOriginals
@AlexHibbertOriginals 5 ай бұрын
I don't know if you can get them in giant 200Ah+ sizes, and in terms of AA batteries that I'm more familiar with, it's seen as a pretty old chemistry. These lead carbons are brand new tech - far superior to traditional lead acid.
@deeznutz-bn9sl
@deeznutz-bn9sl 5 ай бұрын
@@AlexHibbertOriginals as far as I’m aware, Ni-Cd batteries were phased out because of environmental concerns. Which makes sense for things like AAs that could get thrown away, but since you’re already using heavy metals it’s not really a concern. Nickel-Cadmium is a very robust chemistry and i’ve heard they hold up better in the cold.
@COM70
@COM70 5 ай бұрын
@@deeznutz-bn9slthey hate the cold (even for storage)and are best suited to complete charging and complete discharging otherwise they retain a memory of the unused portion, which then becomes unusable.

I'm still confused about how you will deal with humidity in this super insulated boat. Even with a crew of 3 or 4, just breathing will put moisture into the cabin. Add to that spray from the outside or wet clothes ....i know these boats were designed to keep dozens of people safe inside ... but not comfortable and not for long.
@oldman1944
@oldman1944 5 ай бұрын
Normally you would use a dehumidifier but in the arctic he might be better served with a heat recovery system that brings in small amounts of external air through a heat exchanger. The outside air will be super dry.
