Alex, there's nothing wrong with an arc welder. They do a great job. There's a lot of advantages to them particularly outside. Small, portable, have their own gas shield and with practice even cheap ones do a fantastically good job (except like a cheap angle grinder only for so long). Generally, difficulty in striking an arc is a couple of reasons. One of them is damp electrodes, the other? Well, practice. If your trick works for you that's great. You can make it easier by having some scrap steel to run the cold electrode across to strike an arc since the heat dries the flux. To facilitate starting, make sure you don't open the electrodes until the last second. Get some cheap desiccant packs and wrap them up tight for long term storage. To start, a trick is hold the electrode near the end as you would a pencil then strike it like a match but as if you were ticking students exam answer or something. As it starts obviously remove your hand (yes you might have to swap to your favoured hand). One thing you can do is practice running beads a half an electrode long, then another nestled against it and the parent material and just keep repeating this until all the beads are similar width, height, look good and you can cast off without burning a hole. KZbin will show you how. You need some scrap plate. 6mm/1/4" plate steel or thicker is good. Prep the surface with an angle grinder first and use the angle grinder to clean where the earth clamp goes. It is a lot about prep. People that weld without prep aren't very professional even if they think they are. This practice makes a huge difference in a short time. A few hours, just remember some people disappear into the arc and forget about duty cycle - cheap machines might only be 10% use to 90% cooling (which is often why they don't last long).

Cheers for the tips Paul. I didn't consider damp rods. I'll do some more practice, but the angled tap/lighting a match arc striking technique is one I've been working on. I'll also give my cheap machine plenty of time to chill out.

Another tips is to use both hands then welding , one on the rod an the other one at the" handle"

Wow, very sad tale of the Aluminium Warehouse company. It makes one wonder how they stay in business. You may want to get more of the drill bits with 1/4in hex ends. There are lots of cramped locations in Alan where you need to install things over time. Good progress on the stern platform. I have never tried stick welding, but can say it is also easy to get flux core wire stuck to the weld, just thin diameter so easy to break off. Dave.

I have to wonder if some of these difficulties with ordering the metal tubes and rods is a consequence of Brexit and none of the metal distributors want to admit that they now have to wait until they can do mass orders from their suppliers in the EU to get through customs when before they could order piecemeal much easier.

Platform is shaping up nicely Alex, did you passivate your brackets after welding and grinding? Stainless surface only remains stainless once the crystalline structure is realigned with nitric acid to reinstate the chromium layer. Horizontal drilling through the rod and brackets and fitting 6mm bolts will give a strong enough securing method and still allow disassembly in case of the need for marina "bump" repairs plus if you were to weld it would be hard to fully passivate.
@AlexHibbertOriginals
@AlexHibbertOriginals 3 ай бұрын
True - but each of the four assemblies could be unbolted from each end and replaced or repaired. It's a lot more work to drill through the three 'layers' here and bolt. The whole lot is being primed and painted for aesthetic reasons, so I'm not worried about corrosion.

Do you have any plans for anti fowl bottom paint? There seems to be a lot of growth on the bottom from just a few months in the water.
@AlexHibbertOriginals

Yes indeed - that was due to sitting in a warm fish dock for a month. I have the anti foul ready, and will sand back that dry growth very soon.

So a hollow tube can actually be stronger than a solid rod - especially when it comes to compression or lateral load. It's been quite a while since I've taken physics. I'm sure what you have is fine. But don't just automatically thing solid = stronger.
@AlexHibbertOriginals

You're certainly right. But, I had to make a call, and solid rod sure as hell beat 1.5mm wall. They aren't that heavy, either. Cheers Paul.

@@AlexHibbertOriginals arc welding has allot of UVC light which destroys dna. so its a better habbit puting on a full face one instead of some goggle's. but if its just a few small quick welds. it aint gonna matter. sun does the same after a long day in the sun. if your doing longer projects like welding up a small fuel tank then its allot more important since at the end of the day yur whole arm is burned/face. dont ask me how xD just casualy welding in a t-shirt for a while. it kinda burned at night xD
