With a bit more time to google than Anthony had: The stat Anthony cites (the answer google gives) of the Great Wall being 13,000 miles long is for all sections of the wall built ever. That is to say, there is 13,000 miles of Great Wall in China today. However, not only does the wall curve and wind a lot, much of the wall is actually just covering the same border logistical distance as like 5 other sections of wall, just because older sections of the wall had fallen into disrepair even in ancient times. If you look at a map, the end to end distance all the sections of the wall cover is about half that of the distance from LA to NY. Also, as they mention in the video, many of these sections are basically ruins and the Ming dynasty section of the wall (the best preserved) is only about 5 and a half thousand miles long as per the same source Anthony cites/google provides. “Mongol” is an ethnic group (that live in Mongolia and the one Genghis Khan was), whereas “Mongolian” refers to a person from Mongolia the country today. That is to say, there are other ethnic groups in Mongolia in addition to the Mongols, like how China’s most prominent ethnic group is Han Chinese but China has many more ethnic groups besides Han Chinese. “Mongoloid” comes from an outdated theory of race in which there are “caucasoids, mongoloids, and negroids.” Mongoloid was basically just what would later be known as “oriental,” “yellow,” and “East Asian.” The term originally comes from a German scholar Meiners in 1785, in which he draws a distinction between the “mongolians” and the “tartar-caucasians.” Meiner’s peer Blumenbach from the same university went further to develop the idea of the “caucasoid, mongoloid, and negroid” races. White people are still called Caucasians today. The use of “Mongoloid/Mongolian” to mean Down syndrome came from Down himself, the original researcher that Down syndrome is named after (today). Down thought that people with Down syndrome looked Asian, so he used the word “Mongolian” from Blumenbach’s work. I think the American equivalent to tearing a hole in the Great Wall is for some company to fill in a section of the Grand Canyon to be able to cross 😂 Idk why but everyone seems to love the Grand Canyon. It’s not manmade but it is very old and pretty widely considered to be an American thing
