The Feast of the Seven Fishes is a holiday tradition where Italian-Americans make and serve a bunch of Italian seafood dishes for Christmas Eve. In this episode, I'm making a delicious cold calamari salad and perfectly crisp fried calamari. Calamari is inexpensive and very easy to cook provided it's cooked very quickly! I hope you enjoy both of these calamari dishes! This is the first episode of the Feast of the Seven Fishes Series.

I remember my grandfather prepared baccalá when I was a kid. You could smell it throughout the whole apartment building but it was good. My Nana and he were the best Italian cooks and I miss the big family dinners. I am so grateful that they taught me how to cook. You’re making me hungry!

That you for always being blatant about food safety/cleanliness. I’ve probably commented it on another video but it’s one of the many things I love about your channel so much. Kitchen hygiene is so important for good food.

I wanted to thank you for these two dishes. I made them both for Christmas Eve and they came out pretty good. The calamari salad was just perfect. What a refreshing dish. Very easy to make . The fried calamari will take a few more times to get perfect. Came out good but I think I had to have the oil even hotter. Some of the flower was floating after the first batch. With that said this was a great dish and the family loved it. Thank you once again. I hope you and your family had a great Christmas.
@SipandFeast

Hey thanks! If you have a lot floating flour bits you can clean the oil with a fine mesh spoon to remove most of it between batches.

Thanks very much! My Grandmother lived in the bottom of our house with her own kitchen. Those basement kitchen homes were always desired by Italian-Americans who moved to Long Island from Brooklyn and Queens. She did a lot of the cooking and I watched her and learned from her when I was very young. I worked in a few places when I was 17-20 so know a bit about the professional environment. Fun fact. I used to cook sauce and meatballs at 3am sometimes in college for my fraternity brothers. One guy, in particular, would drive to the store and pick up all the ingredients we needed😂. I used to love cooking during that period of my life!

Your calamari salad is very similar to the way my mother made hers except we used both green and black olives and Kraft Zesty Italian dressing, which works really well with this. I find frozen calamari actually works best, and the smaller calamari is less likely to be tough. Nice job!
