@@BENCMEN The strong loyalty Two Socks has for Dunbar in this scene is heart breaking and extremely hard to watch, especially when he yelps in pain. I know my dog would do the same if I were in that situation. All dog's unconditional love for their master is immeasurable. Two Socks loyalty to Dunbar resulted in his death, and it's a reflection of the relationship all dogs have with their master.

A lot of actors deserved to win Oscars for this movie. I was happy that John Barry won, because the score is so incredibly moving and gives the film ten times more emotional impact. But Mary McDonnell was perfect and the scene where she's reunited with Dunbar after he wad captured is one of the most romantic moments in films. Graham Greene was pretty much unknown as an actor, but his performance was Oscar-worthy. He had the misfortune of being up against Joe Pesci in Goodfellas, one of the most memorable performances in many years. McDonnell, however, lost to Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost. Her "Lawdy, lawdy!! I can't believe what I is seeing!" scenes in Ghost were just stereotypical bug-eyed shtick, much like that of Cuba Gooding in Jerry Maguire, shouting "Show me the money!" over and over. They're nothing more than affirmative action awards to please the leftist PC crowd. Kevin Costner gave a pitch perfect performance while also directing the film under pressure from the studio, who were very concerned about the fact that Westerns were a long dead genre. Dances With Wolves POV was through the eyes and actions of Dunbar, and it's success was in large part due to Costner carrying the film with his performance. He was beat out by Jeremy Irons in Reversal of Fortune. I barely remember that film or that Irons was the lead actor. But giving Costner another Oscar was probably seen as too much since he already won Best Director and Best Movie.

OMG saw this 20 yrs ago and NEVER realized til now ...that Two Socks was *helping* to rescue his friend. He knew the tribesmen were waiting to ambush the soldiers and wanted them to chase him. I thought he just wanted to see him again :O

I know now that a real complete life can only be had if one has at least JUST one special bond with another creature. What my own dogs have taught me has made me such a better and more empathetic man. They teach me will, patience, courage, fortitude, loyalty and the knowledge that we are all connected by some force that despite its remoteness, is always right there in the eyes of our fellow beings. It seems, to me anyway, that Two Socks did not have his own pack, something that wolves NEED in order to survive. He was very skinny and likely did not do well when it came to finding food for himself. I think he started following John because he wanted and needed company, and once John started feeding him, Two Socks also realized he could get food from being around John, as well, food that he did not need to find himself.

Who else would it be?...If you mean at the very end, when, in that very dramatic scene when the wolf, was on the pinnacle of the mountain, and howling as Lieutenant Dunbar (Kevin Costner) leaves the Native American camp and the brave also on a mountain ridge, cries out in a loud voice,"Dances with Wolves, you are my friend, Dances with Wolves, you will always be, my friend !! "

Dunbar"(Kevin Costner) choked the soldier, that was shooting at "Two Sox",as he started to come to, after being unconscious, but was whacked with the butt of the rifle by the other soldier... "Dunbar" knew it was "Two Sox" when he looked out on the ridge to the horizon, and saw it was him...Just look at his two front paws...
