Thanks for all the dance tips! It's kind of tough to practice all of them, but trying my best to work them in somewhere. Keep up the good work!

Back in the early 90's, I saw a guy actually TEACHING men to crank the arm back and forth to "help keep time". (no, I never fell for that) Then one time a random lady I danced with hooked her left thumb in my belt loop on my right side while we "danced". Man that was weird. A lot of people learning to dance just want to be able to do all the cool moves not realizing these "little things" you present is exactly what makes it all do-able. Thank you so much and keep'em coming!

Hahaha! The thumb in the belt loop. Yeah. People do some weird stuff. It’s amazing how many times we’ve heard something like “I don’t care about being proper... I just want to be able to get out on the floor and feel comfortable”. It’s hard to get some people to understand that we don’t care about “proper” either. We DO care about what works and what makes things more comfortable. The truth is that too few people learn to country dance from qualified teachers. Many people just pick it up from a friend or some random guy that teaches the free class at the bar (that the bar owner just offered free admission to so they can offer classes to get bodies in the door) The little things really are the big things.

I think the "cranking" looks SOOOO hokey and all. I have heard so many complements over the years when couples are great at two stepping,, their upper body never moves and it looks like the couples are gliding or skating around the floor.

Excellent points! I LOVE this series (tiny tips). Many times when I'm not doing something right it's because I'm messing up the core basics rather than the flourishing move of the step. Thank you for reminding us to focus on the basics. That makes everything exponentially better! Really enjoyable video!

We’re so glad you liked it! Everyone wants to do the “cool stuff”... but it’s easy to overlook the basic stuff that makes that stuff work :-)

@@countrydancex I've danced with girls who do the pump handle thing, I asked one if she was trying to get me to spit water, said 'no' the next time I asked her to dance. Hmm.

I wear a cowboy hat. I would love to see tips on doing the same moves but with a cowboy hat. OR ways to use a cowboy hat in certain moves!!
@countrydancex4 жыл бұрын
Dancing with a cowboy hat on should be listed on your dance resume as a "special skill" ;-) The truth is, there really aren't any special "with a hat" moves... but moves that don't require you to turn under the arm are definitely easier. You can do pretty much do anything with a hat that you can do without one. You have to, obviously, be aware of the width of the hat and manage your spacing with your partner well when you're doing anything that requires you to go under the arm. The further you are from your partner, the more difficult it's going to be to go under the arm.

@@countrydancex Thanks,, actually, I have at least 2 moves with using my hat I use often. One is with west coast swing,, like a one arm hair brush move, with the other arm lifting the hat. The hand with her hand goes between my head and the hat. Im sure you've seen that. And the other one I picked up off a video at a Dallas, Tx club,,, where a couple was two stepping, but he had a ball cap on. He just went from one arm over his head while he was like in a sweetheart position with her. But for me, I learned to do it with the same approach as above. I lift my cowboy hat, then the other hand (with her hand), goes from one shoulder to my other shoulder. I THINK its my move created,, by using my cowboy hat. My partner loves the move. You can do it like 3 times going down the straight away while two stepping. If I can get it filmed, I'll send it.

A&R: can you please create a video of just you two dancing two-step? I have friends ask what two-step, they have no idea, and a lesson video doesn't really tell the story of how much fun just social dancing it can be. Thoughts?
