What is so moving in this battle scene is that the Rohan came as a nation to go to war against overwhelming force. They crested the ridge and can see what they are about to ride against and they charged anyway. You could argue that they knew it was either fight here or be taken later by themselves. If you are on that ridge looking down at that huge army sorry it would be easy to ride away and go we can defend the mountain passes easier and at least fight and die trying to protect our families there. But they rode into death because that is what they were looking at, even if they could break that force the loses were going to break them as well, so that is courage.
