The Animals weren't the original singers. It's an old folk song (possibly as early as 17th century origins) that many covered before The Animals. Just a FWIW. If you check Wiki, it talks about the song's origins and also possible origins of "Rising Sun" which was whorehouse in English traditional songs. Cheers!
