This was such a great idea from Vario. I agree the, silver dial is definitely my favorite of the two. It looks really thick for a 12mm tall watch, maybe if it was a bit larger the proportions would work better.

You are right, they really need to let us know how to change the battery on this one. I for one wouldn't want to buy a watch this expensive where I couldn't change the battery down the line.

I have the (wine) red version of this watch and I love it as a nice formal dress watch. I ♥️ the design because it's different in the right way. Going to wear it again this Easter weekend. Regarding batteries: there is a video already out there showing it... It was posted on the Facebook page but it's also out on KZbin.

Agree. I don’t always like their designs but I like that they are doing different things. Not sure is see the utility in a reversible dress watch. That silver side is so awesome, that the reverso tech would never be used. (If it were mine). The prominent crown(s) left me a little cold. Not sure what else Vario could do with them I suppose but I didn’t like that they were visible. All in all though, it’s a cool watch. Not for me, but I’m glad it exists! Great review. Oh, and the red strap was a great color but a rally design on a dress watch? Ehhh.

Very innovative company, especially compared to a very sheeple industry. My only concern: the dials are 90% there. Some more interesting material choices, or sunburst, etc, is needed. The dials fall just a little bit short, hence I've never purchased one. The green dial is a good example. It's really boring, an example of a big miss. For this price range, more effort is needed on the dials.

Shane I bought the blue dial version & love it! It was a tester I guess for the Reverso. But after buying this I feel my itch has been well & truly scratched! Ivan makes a fantastic product, with innovation & different! I agree with you about the art deco side being more appealing. Having said that, flipping it around for the blue side just makes it more versatile!👍🏻😎

Considering your worries about battery replacement: on the side with the silver dial there are 4 screws on each corner. I presume that if you unscrew all of them then both sides housing the movements will come off, leaving behind the tiny frame on which the entire assembly pivots. Then you will have the access to both movements that usually sit back to back of each other. Most likely there are two gaskets in there as well to achieve the 50m water resistance.

To my eyes that's a really gorgeous looking watch, my grail for a while has been the JLC Reverso which I will never be able to afford, so the Vario would be a good alternative and it would sit nicely next to my 1918 Trench watch.

Just bought a red Must de Cartier, it's so refined in comparison. Maybe it isn't a fair comparison because it's a super thin manual movement, but if you compare the Versa with a JLC, you can really see the difference in refinement again. I guess it's a very honourable attempt by a micro brand to engineer something so complex, but I don't think I'd add it to my collection. I may've been more tempted by a thinner single face reverso style watch rather than a duoface that I wouldn't really get the most use out of. Shame, I really quite like Vario releases.

Looks like you may take out the 4 flat screws out on the white/silver dial side to take apart and service. Maybe email them to verify. Have a great weekend.

Great review of a nice looking, interesting watch. I get people having concern for thickness as that is always important to me, but I don't know if it could be thinner being two watches. Dress and casual styles combined is neat, although I would pass on the bright green. I would be interested in two different dress styles in one like a dark dial to alternate with the light dial as well. Also would be happy with a non reversing dress only in thinner case.

I like the company and have an Empire from the original batch. The big downside that prevented me from getting one of these is the thickness which ruins the overall look for me. Sleek is the last thing I'd call it. I'd be interested in a single movement version.

Have to be honest, in my opinion this is a prototype that needs an awful lot of improvement. It's clunky, looks unrefined, and though the dials are nice, the case design is horrendous. Maybe that's just the engineer in me. They do make great straps though and I buy them regularly.

The width of 25.5mm is exactly the same as a Cartier Tank Must Large. I think it could be a little wider to cater for the loss of dial face due to the edges of the centre component that flips. It’s also a bit too thick, maybe they could do a version that has just one movement: one side to tell the time & the other an engraved or plain metal surface, just like a Reverso Monoface which has a thickness of just 7.4mm

It's very neat, but it would be kind of nice to be able to pick which dials you want. But that would obviously complicate things with it. ETA: I like tank style watches because they usually have an old-school vibe, like something you'd see on Bogart's wrist. (He often wore a Longines tank, so...)

The logistics would be a nightmare, but that would be cool. Like have 10 or so different dial options and you can pick which ones you want in it when you order.

@Relative Time Yeah, it would be an absolute nightmare. What could be less of one is if the watch head were an insert that you could order separately. IIRC, there are already a couple of brands that offer such modularity. Of course, it would probably just be easier to get two whole watches instead. That's usually what happens to modular items, spare components grow into whole new items.

Nice enough looking watch and I’m a fan of the company. But, when looking at a watch of this style, I have a hard time with the price considering you can get seiko versions for less and I believe in solar. You lose the reverse aspect, but for half the price, who cares.

Gorgeous watch. But this begs a good movement, hand wind or automatic. They can use a Miyota mechanical engine. In this manifestation it will be a tank watch not a reverso due to there being a mechanical movement. Then it will literally sell out too fast Vario will have a hard time meeting demand.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think they are working on a mechanical single sided version. I saw a picture of a prototype on their Instagram and it looked like it had an exhibition caseback.

I think they will use the same straps. So you might have an issue. Although email them to make sure. Plus you can always swap to a longer aftermarket strap if you really love it.
