Two ways to build The Master, Multiplied Dr Who Magic the Gathering commander breaks all the rules!

Good call on the two builds, I had the same thought! Those myriad creatures just aren't great without the Master's help, but the master costs 6, has no protection, and is kill on sight... I suspect a lot of people will have more fun with a myriad/encore build on paper than they will in practice. 😢 4/3 isn't a lot for an expensive commander that wants to attack, so I've tried to pack evasion where I can. Dolmen gate, cover of darkness, even some Mutate creatures (gimmicky, but they tend to come with stat boosts as well as evasion that persist across subsequent master clones). The deck is still terribly weak to board wipes, though...

Everything you've said is SPOT ON. The Dolmen Gate . . . .so good. The fact I missed putting this in my decklist, pains me! ha. Cover of Darkness is also one of my favourite cards of all time - that art. Great choices. And then the janky mutate option speaks to me. Glad you resonate with my take - at certain tables, with a really clear pregame conversation, the Myraid/Encore theme is going to be so much fun but more likely, it's going to be a slog and Simic does the copies thing so much better and Sakashima to negate the legend rule. My first thought was to put him in the 99 of an isshin deck focused on myriad and token doubling support.

Actually, heat shimmer does work if you control the token when the ability triggers. Since you control the ability it shoulnt exile itself, even if the creature has the ability. Itll just not stick around if the master goes away.

Jaxis the Troublemaker was an immediate first thought when I saw this card, make another haste copy that won't sac (I think? this inherent vs active has got my brain a little scrambled) but this one will also draw me a card if/when it dies and same for all it's copies. Hell to keep track of though

Yeah, that works. I like the idea of adding some of the altars so you could choose to sacrifice those copies, make some mana and draw a card. Another avenue to explore with this deck. I'm interested in keeping track of all those Master copies!

If you’re putting Blade of Selves in the deck, I’d recommend putting Bloodthirster in the deck too! Equip the Blade to Bloodthirster and when it connects with a player it’s basically just infinite combats and infinite Bloodthirsters after that.

I LOVE Bloodthirster. He's in my Maelstrom Wanderer build with Xenegos - the exponentially growth of his power due to Xenagos's combat buff is so fun. Love this suggestion.

The idea of having tons of extra combat spells and slapping a sword of feast and famine on one of my Masters so that I can untap my lands and keep casting them. OR EVEN BETTER Aggravated Assault that is extra combat on a stick with continuous instances of untapping lands.

I’m think of a master Voltron. He will get big and scary and hopefully have enough evasion with enchantments and equipment that he will attack as the strong first one and the smaller less impressive masters still make better and better bodies

I think that's the smart path. Cover of Darkness would be awesome in that build. Such a cool take on Voltron, tall and wide, definite mini-me vibes going on.

Good choices! It's the age old struggle between efficiency - your strategy and doing the 'most' - myriad, encore and copy effects. Both are incredibly fun but I'd be more scared of playing the former!

why doesn't heat shimmer work? the token has at the biginning of end step exile this permanent, the master says Triggered abilities you control can’t cause you to sacrifice or exile creature tokens you control. is the exile not a triggered ability?

That is an excellent goal! When I talked about that strategy in the video, I thought, is that less fun than other creatures with myraid, encore etc but then I realised, it's such a unique kind of 'go wide voltron', how could it be anything but completely awesome to pilot and get away with! The effect is pretty cool... But! I think The Master is too much mana for my tastes, I don't tend to go above 4 mana without green or in-built reduction!

In play testing, and with 15 mana rocks in the second decklist, he came out early enough to be scary. I agree though, expensive commanders usually give me pause unless I can lean on green, like my Maelstrom Wanderer deck. I'll go for a high mana value commander outside of green and its not central to my plan and can add value for a couple of turns, sort of a sorcery in the command zone feel. The effect on this guy though . . . Love breaking the rules!
