In this video, learn both how to animate a nut and bolt's movement in Blender with keyframes, as well as how to use constraints to link object movement inside your viewport! This allows you to not only animate movement, but also to set up movements that are linked together in your viewport without keyframes!

So...I was SUPER excited to start learning about how the movement constraints work in Blender - MUCH more to come on that topic. Let me know if you have any questions!

Very cool tut as always! It would be interesting if there's a setting that uses the thread count, and then determines the actual calculation of degrees for turning the nut. So that we're not estimating. But looks super cool!

Found this, which shows how much distance for one complete nut turn. www.atlanticfasteners.com/tech-tips/how-far-a-nut-or-bolt-travels-in-one-full-turn/

You could definitely do this if you really wanted to, but it's really a question of what the value of your time is. Most of the time, the goal isn't to perfectly simulate exactly how an animated nut travels along the bolt - usually the goal is to animate the movement in a way that looks realistic. What do you gain by making it an exactly perfect simulation? In the case of a lot of users, you gain nothing other than wasted time. In the case of a few specific applications, it could be important though - just consider your application before going a long ways down this path.

@@TheCGEssentials Totally get you Mr. CG Essentials! If you didn't tell me it's not 'threading' correctly, I wouldn't have known. Some people demand accuracy, so for those, I guess we could use that link to figure out the EXACT number of screw turns etc. If you're doing an animated graphic, that shows a bunch of screws/nuts bolting on a piece of metal turning when it's 10 meters away, who cares right? It LOOKS very convincing. =>

I'm hoping the geometry node workflow will give blender a means of doing these kind of things parametrically. The bolt gets defined with thread length and pitch as variables(along with diameter and thread profile), which can be referenced in the nut transformations via calculations.

Interesting - for what purpose? That seems overly complicated for creating a simple animation like this. Also, you can use math equations to calculate things like this already - see this tutorial - kzbin.info/www/bejne/iH6cfYCZq8uCjpo

Wouldn't it be much easier if you add collision to both the objects and parent an empty to the nut so that we can move it with the empty. It would more natural that way and more easy

i only have one question though. lets say you set one up with the constraint options. But you then want to move the piece to a different location on the screen, Do you have to go in and redo all the values?
@TheCGEssentials
@TheCGEssentials 3 жыл бұрын
Depends - if it stays at the same height on the Z-Plane, you're fine, since the constraint is measuring the Z values (height above ground). If you move it up or down, you'll have to redo your min-max values based on that new location. Does that make sense?
@1979Beyond
@1979Beyond 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheCGEssentials for sure, i just wasn't sure if there was an easy way to do it like if those values could be relative to its local position and not the grid, or if it had to be manualy done again. thanks for the reply. I have jumped into Blender over the last few months slowly but made some progress.

Using constraint to add animation cannot save the animation file like the method of key frame right?
@TheCGEssentials
@TheCGEssentials 3 жыл бұрын
Well they're really not the same thing - a keyframe stores the information about the object state, while the constraint more acts as a rule as to how the object can behave. You can still add a keyframe to an object that also has constraints applied to it
