Alan's life was rough, but he never appreciated the fact he had a place to live, courtesy of his brother and a complete stranger. He always pushed the boundaries and never really learned his lesson. It's not a surprise nobody could put up with him.

Alan really became insufferable asshole in the Walden years. He has no right to complain, when both he nearly burned down the house and destroy the good toaster and tried to replace it with a cheap one.

But it all comes together in the scene where Alan is arguing with Waldren and scantily dressed Lyndsay steps out of Waldren's bedroom, a real oopsie moment. Poor Alan, is a broken man.

I asked one time how they stayed such good friends when Alan was clearly always jealous of Walden. I got the answer: “In all fairness, Alan was jealous of anyone doing better than him in life” which is definitely true…and yet he never did a thing to turn his own life around, he got even worse in the Ashton/Walden era.
