The problem with the first AITA story is that she knows what she’s doing is not normal and recommended because she lied to the doctor, if she was confident in her decision she would tell her doctor the truth. Honestly this is child abuse, she is causing the baby discomfort and the father did the right thing telling the truth and should be supervising his wife with the baby

The fact that she was mad that he told the truth and says he "made her look like a bad parent" proves that she knows it's dangerous. I do imagine there's some sort of post partum going on, but that doesn't change the fact that this baby is in danger. I feel bad for this husband, this sounds like a scary situation. I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving that baby alone with her.

She's trying to scare the husband out of doing what he knows is best for his baby. I really hope everything turned out alright and she was able to get help, because something feels VERY wrong

The baby is dehydrated...it won’t kill the kid to give it some food...though I dont recommend it that early ....but they need their full fluid intake....she k own it’s a problem or otherwise she wouldn’t hide it.....he has the right to speak up...it is his child too...the child is obviously hurting

This made me cringe. I know in some cultures they feed the babies earlier. My SIL was feeding her son at 3 months with table food (they're Egyptian), they found it weird that I didn't start introducing food until about 6-7 months as my girl was a preemie.

Neighbors fed their 4 month old mashed bananas and blocked up the kid's small intestines. Kid is 12 now and still has scar from operation that was done to remove the blockage

I know this is an older comment, but not only that, but she was fully causing her baby to be long term dehydrated, that is going to cause even more issues. Infants absolutely need 24oz of formula or breastmilk, PERIOD. That baby was not remotely getting that. She is blantantly abusive and everyone's just acting like she's a poor little helpless woman, not a woman whos getting off on her baby being miserable

She pitched a fit as of OPs last comment: My mom just picked up the baby. My wife went ballistic. Screaming at me, my mom, told her she was kidnapping our daughter and she didn’t have her permission to take her. She’s currently locked herself in the bathroom and I’m waiting for someone to come over. I called the crisis hotline and they are sending someone our way. She seems to be crying and also cussing me and telling me how awful of a husband and a father I am. I want my wife back. We don’t talk to each other like this. I love her and our daughter. Hopefully this works itself out so I can give my family back.

So that story with the niece, I straight hate the fact that her sister just dumps her kid on people unannounced. General courtesy for anyone watching your kid is to give some form of advanced notice. She’s not the asshole for refusing to take care of a kid that out of the blue gets dumped on her.

And she rings the doorbell and takes off. Imagine if OP didn’t answer the door and the kid was left out there? Wouldn’t even be her fault. I’ve ignored the doorbell more than once. Or even if she didn’t hear it because she was doing something. Whatever happens to that kid is the mom’s fault, it’s crazy to leave a kid outside alone without making sure they’re safe.

The sister clearly has no remorse for cheating with her sister's fiancee. It is not okay what she did and she clearly has not apologized. What kind of sister does that her own sister. That is not okay. The parents should understand. She broke her sister's heart.

How calculating of that 16 year old to have an instant escape plan in which he can then try to blackmail the adults so that he'll have no consequences. He sounds like the worst type of person & probably needs to be placed in therapy asap. He's going to continue to grow up to be a monster.

Yep- and the step dad is right for letting the baby daddy handle that train wreck. If you want to run to daddy to escape consequences, you can stay there. He’s 2 years from being able to vote and be a legal adult- he needs to face repercussions and if that means the dad realizes how much of a monster his son is, he needs to see it for himself.

He will definitely grow up privileged. The punishment ideas sounded good, get a job or sell his things (that I’m assuming the stepdad and mum paid for). He needs to learn that what he did was wrong but the bio dad and mum definitely let him off with a lot and they need to parent a bit more.

yess and as a 17 year old, at 16 i was well aware of what's right, what's wrong, and what's abuse. 16 is just two years away from being an "adult" (even though ik that doesn't automatically make you one.) but my point is this MAN is going to be sent into the world thinking aggression is anger regulation. it's scary and needs to be dealt with now before he learns his lesson the hard way in the real world where dad's home is not going to be an option to run away and avoid consequences.

I bet that dad of the step kid that destroyed OP’s daughter’s books wanted it in writing because he knows they can press charges. If she collects old books, ones that can’t be easily replaced, odds are they’re worth some money and he could possibly get a felony on his record. He’s not even saying the kid is banned permanent, just that he can’t come back without accepting punishment for his actions. I’d make the stepsons bullying of the daughter a dealbreaker as well. One strike policy from that point on.

This seems pretty likely. And I think OP is being so reasonable. This bullying could eventually escalate into physical abuse even with the step sons habits. It sounds like that step son needs actual help if he's acting out so terrible and OP is totally correct in protecting his daughter and not letting this go. And with the books thing OP even said some of the books are hard to get, that seems like reason enough to press charges. The destruction of books not easily replaced is so messed up.

@@cass7133 As a fellow book worm like the daughter I can speak on actual experience how painful it is to loose books like that. I had a full ceiling to floor book shelf in my dad's house. He ruined all my books through some in a cooler of water and let them mold. I'm assuming her burned most other ones. This happened years ago and anytime I think on it I start to tear up. I also had a separate instance of a little kid from some distant family member purposely grabbed the hose and sprayed my and my book while I was sitting outside reading. Everyone had been out grilling or playing in the pool. I remember screaming no and how silent it got and all the adults gasping. I began to bawl and if not for the quick thinking of his older brother that book would've been ruined. They rushed me inside and he dried my book with the hair dryer. Those kids of things leave scars

Not every parent is trying to do the best for their child. Most are but some really aren’t. She knows she’s harming her child and continues to do it. I honestly wouldn’t trust her with the baby if I were him. There’s following your parents advice and then there’s knowingly hurting your child. She’s knowingly hurting her infant, there’s something wrong there.

This podcast is so therapeutic for me. At the Levi story I started bawling my eyes out because when I was young, my older cousin would do this to me all the time. He bullied me, made up stuff to get me in trouble, he'd break all the cool stuff my dad or my family on my dad's side gave me as presents, he'd eat my food, he'd be mean to my friends when they were over, we even got physical a few times. He was completely awful to me and never suffered any consequences. I blame so many of my insecurities and mental health issues on all he put me through. No one's ever understood or taken my side, I've always been told to suck it up, forgive and forget, because it's family, it was just dumb kid stuff. You guys made me feel valid and understood. I love the step mom of the two daughters! Way to ensure she’s spending time with the older daughter. Often the oldest child feels abandoned a bit anyway because younger kids just need so much more attention and then if her mom passed away too? It feels like the dad is showing favoritism to the youngest. That he just wants the easy route

Your friend is being FAR too light on the mum in the first story. She’s being given education and doesn’t care. She is literally harming her child. Her stomach isn’t just upset, it can cause gut issues later. Even at 4 months it still isn’t safe. The doctor and the husband are doing all they can to educate. The mum is horrid. The dad needs to take the baby with him when he moves out and give her the same ultimatum. She can come back when SHE is ready to listen and you are ready to forgive.

Something I’ve always noticed about the parent child relationship is that dads are associated with “fun”. If you ever see those videos online where both parents call to the kid to see which parent they go to it’s more often then not the father. This is because mom makes them take baths, mom makes them eat vegetables, mom makes them have bedtime etc. However, dad, who doesn’t usually hold these responsibilities just gets all the benefits of a child, playing catch, watching movies, building forts etc. Even when I was a child I looked to my dad when I wanted something fun, but looked to my mom when my stomach hurt.

1st story: She knows what's she's doing is wrong that's why she lied to the pediatrician. This is child abuse/neglect. She says he made her look like a bad parent? For telling the doctor what she's doing? She knows she's a bad parent. He should go stay with his parents. Take the baby and divorce her. She is a danger to the baby. It just occurred to me that maybe the mom can't produce breast milk for whatever reason and feels insecure about the formula and that's why she's doing this. In that case still take the baby from her but there's hope with therapy. So much therapy.

And I found it disturbing that the co host had 'sympathy' for the mom and wanted to give her the 'benefit of doubt'. Moms intentions don't matter as long as the child is getting hurt or abused. She's a PA, she should know better.

I’m really curious about that story. Considering the mom seemed to be very fearful of her family and healthcare professions would take away her baby, I’m wondering if she doesn’t have psychotic symptoms. Maybe she had delusions that made her suspicious of the formula, and didn’t confide in the doctor for the same reason. If that’s the case, she could get better with treatment. In any case, I think it would be worth investigating why she is behaving that way

I understand tho it is a danger but at least she’s feeding her baby. She cares to some level and if that’s the only thing then no don’t just keep the baby from her. But yes lots and lots of therapy

@@babiem2290 this doesn’t make sense because it’s not because someone is a parent that they are allowed to neglect their kid. If a person isn’t able to take care of a child for whatever reason (e.g depression), then they should let another person parent the child (e.g the father) for whatever time they can’t do it themselves. You just acknowledged the baby is in danger and then said to not keep the baby away from her. That doesn’t go hand in hand. If someone is a danger to you, do you purposely stay close to them ?

First Story NTA. It's great that OP tooking his baby out of this dangerous situation. One think that kinda hurting me tho is the mom(it seems like from some comments he's filing for full custody) Yes she's putting her baby in danger which isn't okay, but she most likely is going through postpartum depression and with that I feel like the moment she realizes what she did what wrong it's going to definitely haunt her bc this isn't something you can control and she isn't getting help(in her case bc it seems like she doesn't know she has it). I just hope she can get help so that her and the baby can be together, and it wont affect their relationship down the road.

If she doesn’t get help, she shouldn’t have access to the baby. Point, blank, period. It’s the parent’s responsibility to keep their child safe, and if that means that they have to take their child away from their partner, then it needs to happen as soon as possible. Protect the baby first- get psychiatric help second.

I WISH there was more acceptance and education on perinatal/antenatal depression. I mean postpartum depression is accepted, but I didnt experience that… I experienced perinatal depression and it was THE worst. @@jesystar I believe it’s while they’re pregnant too. I never knew it was a thing until a gf of mine talked about it. She wasn’t happy during her pregnancy. Thought she’s snap out of it when finding out the gender and seeing the ultrasounds.. the heartbeat. But nothing. For her, it wasn’t until the baby was born that she was overfilled with joy. It makes sense that during our pregnancies that our hormones can be all over the place so why not in the negative spectrum. It’s sad too. I hope I never feel that way about any of my future pregnancies. (If I get pregnant)

@@jesystar Yes exactly! Its depression and/or anxiety during pregnancy. For me, it felt like one day (right after i tested positive) I woke up and a light switch went off in my brain… I literally could not feel emotion.. no joy, excitement, not even really sadness. I couldnt enjoy my favorite music, movies, or time with people.. nothing. Just a deep sense of anxiety and depression. When I opened up to a few people, they just brushed me off or straight up ignored what I just said to them… it was sooo isolating and made it 10x worse. I hope this becomes a popular topic because women really need the support.

Yes thank you so much for your honesty. The first story broke my heart for everyone involved. I had ppd and I remember how God awful it was. There are so many people out there who speak without thinking or knowing anything about it. I'm sorry for what you had to experience. There need to be more parents and moms out there willing to offer support and not judgement

The first one breaks my heart. I had ppd and it was the absolute worst time in my life. I won't go into details because of the painful memories but during my time I didn't feel in control of my actions and most definitely not of my thoughts. Most people judge new mothers so harshly without understanding what it's really like. My ppd leaned more towards harmful behaviors to myself so I can't speak on why the mother kept feeding her so early. I know I used to wish my baby was older so she could HD her own bottle and I could have a little break so maybe she wished for a child who could be more self sufficient? The mind is a powerful thing....

The first story definitely sounds like postpartum psychosis. Call The Midwife does a good job of covering postpartum psychosis in Season 3 Episode 7. It's very scary and it's not the mother's fault but unfortunately the baby isn't safe with her until she gets the help she needs.

I’m a stay at home mom with a 3 and 7 year old. My husband works full time at a law office while also going to law school at night. He still comes home snd helps out with the kids and house work. I try to make sure things are done before he gets home but sometimes it’s been a day. If he came home to dishes in the sink he will pick up the slack and wash them without being asked. He realizes how much I do home all day and night. I also realize how much he does all day for us. On weekends he will usually make at least one lunch or dinner if not all. It’s 50/50 because we are partners.

The first story is definitely scary, and it’s completely understandable that he is uncomfortable leaving her alone with the baby after she lied to the doctor. Even though it definitely seems like the result of some kind sort of postpartum depression or mental illness. When I was around two, I ate peanuts under 100% supervision, inhaled peanut dust, and had to go to the hospital. At age two! She might be feeding soft foods now, but at the rate she’s going you never know when solids will come into play. If she’s already making the baby eat enough regular food at that young of an age, despite discouragement from the doctor and after seeing obvious, negative health impacts on the baby, I would be worried about that kind of lack of acknowledgment and dishonesty about what she is feeding the child. Her lying means there’s no way for doctors to give advice that would benefit her child. Anyways, love the podcast per usual! One of the only podcasts I can listen to from start to finish and still want more!

Wow I would NOT be leaving the baby with the wife! I seriously would not trust her with the baby! A baby that age should be getting AT LEAST 6 to 7 bottles a day!! And she's only giving the baby 2 to 3!!! 😳 Edit postpartum can be so scary! Cause honestly some doctors are amazing about helping moms but there are some doctors who will still look at you like your crazy and so many women feel as if they can't be honest with their doctor cause they are scared how the doctor will react and you want help but don't want to risk getting your baby taken away 🥺 and it can honestly take a new mom awhile to even realize what is going on cause it's all so new and they might think that this is just how it's supposed to be it's so sad!! But that mom 100% needs help and the husband needs to keep the baby till then cause she's just not making the best decisions 🥺

Omg. She hit my feelings! I hate my body, never have liked it. But when I was pregnant I felt beautiful and confident. So many people complimented me. I felt okay for being big. Then after baby I was still huge from the pregnancy but no baby inside me and I spiraled out of control with depression. I only gained 20 lbs during the pregnancy but I felt huge and I am still suffering 1 year later with my "new" body

Your SIL's short story about the pool brings up a lot of memories for me! I teach Korean 6 year olds (4-5 international age) and we have an in-school swim class. Whenever I had kids who won't get in the water, I pull them aside and just talk to them and ask them to explain why they don't want to. Usually, it's a fear or sickness thing and we will try to encourage them by letting me hold them in the water and making it fun. But I did have one girl who inexplicably freaked out one day. It was stereotypical image of cat in a bath tub. Once I calmed her down and talked to her it turned out she was afraid because they were just starting to learn to put their faces in the water and her mother told her if she put her head in the water she'd drown!!! After a couple classes of one-on-one swimming with me she got over her fear. But it was not the first or last time mom did something insane.

I think discussions about domestic labour and housekeeping are very interesting 'cause many people think that those are "natural" traits for women to have, that it's in their nature to be "motherly" or accommodating towards men, but that's just how the patriarchal culture manifests through our society. And it's important to question and educate ourselves to not replicate those behaviours with future partners, family members, friends, etc.

I'm so glad you brought this up. My mom and I disagreed so much when I got pregnant, during pregnancy, and after I had baby. She had that "natural instict" I didn't. She couldn't understand my anxiety my depression my inability to bond with my baby immediately. My husband was the one who took that role. He had always been more comfortable with affection than I was. It took so many talks with her to realize that she had to have compassion for me. She didn't need to understand me she just needed to be loving and offer help when I asked if she wanted to be a part of our lives. I still thank my husband to this day for never judging me for my insecurities or mistakes.

She’s giving her the benefit or the doubt when the woman doesn’t deserve it. I’m willing to bet the mom was white cause she walked away with a pat on the back, a black or Hispanic woman doing something like this could’ve ended up having their kids taken away due to negligence (which has happened). That child could have terrible health issues and could literally die from choking, this isn’t “cute” and it’s not due to lack of knowledge when the pediatrician explained it was wrong TWICE. If she’s already doing things like this and putting her kids life in danger at 2 mo, what other negligent pattern will she have as the child grows? Dad needs to put his foot down.
