Vardzia is a cave monastery site in southern Georgia, excavated from the slopes of the Erusheti Mountain on the left bank of the Kura River, thirty kilometres from Aspindza. The main period of construction was the second half of the twelfth century.

Vardzia is a rock-cut monastic ensemble, a monument of Georgian artistic culture of the 12th-13th centuries. It is a rock-cut city at 1300 meters above sea level. It was built by King George (1156-1184) and consecrated in the name of the Mother of God. According to legend, his daughter, little Tamar, was lost there! When his uncle called out: Where are you, Tamar? Tamar replied, I'm here uncle ( Ak var dzia - აქ ვარ ძია, It sounds like this in Georgian). Giorgi made his daughter Tamari king in 1184, before his death, and his reign (1184-1213) is considered a golden age in the history of Georgia. Best regards from Georgia ❤🇬🇪
