The point of the OP is that nobody actually “made” dry ice, all the video showed us is how to extract already existing dry ice from an extinguisher that you can buy from a local store. The sugar example was basically the same thing. Furthermore, it’s cheaper just to buy a block of dry ice than a fire extinguisher
@MrIwatchforfree12 жыл бұрын
You are just simply awesome
@willparsons326 жыл бұрын
simpler method.... Buy a Co2 fire extinguisher .. position the cone of the hose so it is in an upside down position thus sitting flat on a table top like a cones point - pointing up. and then squeeze the trigger for 5 seconds or more - depending on how much Compressed CO2 (dry ice) you want. It is also ideal to actually use a CO2 extinguisher so you can (almost) properly control the release of Co2 (dry ice).

Damien Stoffel Yes, but he didn't "make" it, so to speak. He didn't render it from the air, or breathe into a collection container, or anything. He just transferred it out of the extinguisher. If you wanted to make your own fire extinguisher, for example, this wouldn't work. It's like clicking a video on how to make a cake, and it starts off by saying go to the store and buy a pack of instant cake mix. : (

***** Yes, that is a fire extinguisher. CO2 is used in BE extinguishers. They're identifiable by being RED with a BLACK BAND/LABEL in the UK, though the US just requires it to be labeled "CO2", and to be listed for use on electrical fires. CO2 and other Halon gas systems are common for electronics, but really poor for home use (they spread oil/greese/gasoline fires due to the high pressure jet they create).

What do you mean “act as if its is -196” ;) Since you are asking for details, let’s take a ride trough the phase diagram, but for educational purposes let me start with CO2. We start at room temperature 20°C and room pressure 1atm, by compressing the temperature and pressure will rise, let’s for the sake of argument keep the process at room temperature by cooling the gas. Once we reach a pressure of ~60atm the CO2 will condensate and we end up with liquid CO2 at room temperature at ~60atm. …

The fire extinguisher is made by compressing CO2 in a container (the extinguisher), and inside the extinguisher the pressure is very hish, so when its released into normal pressure it then becomes very cold, so cold that the CO2 freezes and becomes dry ice. So in theory you could make dry ice completely yourself if you found a way to purify the CO2 and then compress it.
