One way to make it on Got Talent: 0. Have an emotional story 1. Begin playing a classical piano piece until a judge or scripted audience member yawns 2. Stop for dramatic effect, allowing the judges and scripted audience to gasp 3. Kick the bench in a sudden fashion across the stage, and play the piece 3x as fast (bonus points if you dance whilst looking really intense) 4. Move on to the second round. 5. Repeat the process over again next round and be booted off from being boring.

It's even more sad because in real life, people are usually super impressed by classical musicians/singers, but media such as this portrays classical musicians as boring; as a result, that portrayal bleeds out into people's perception, so they are less inclined to actually want to listen to classical music.

The judges asking the violinist to audition again without the pianist is really scandalous, especially since she was standing right there, being told the reason the performance was bad was because of her. It was even reinforced again when the judges gave the now violin soloist a standing ovation even though her performance wasn't even better than their collaboration. If I was in her place, I would have come back up on stage and smashed their heads open. This sort of behaviour is exactly what schools try to discourage kids to do, yet the judges act like they are the ones who are right. To even have something like this on national television is absolutely unacceptable.

When I was at school I had a go at playing the flute. Nope. Couldn't play it LOL Went straight back to my clarinet! The thing is most instruments are actually not to hard to make some semi-musical noises out of them that would impress some idiotic 'reality' TV host. To actually _play_ the instrument takes years of practise and a dedication to the art that these shows gloss over and treat as less then nothing. I stopped playing many years ago, something I regret now and just don't have the time to spare these days to relearn. Actually I can still play my clarinet but I can't read sheet music anymore so I am limited to mostly Stranger on the Shore as it is the only song I played enough as a kid (my mother liked it) that the muscle memory is still present!

I remember watching one if the AGT seasons recently, and they showed in one of the cut scenes, a kid practicing cello prelude number 1. It sounded very nice, and I was hoping to see his audition. I never saw it. He must’ve been one of those rare people who came to audition with actual talent and classical music. I can only imagine the amount of yawns in the audience, and the disrespect the judges must’ve gave him. Classical music is a thing yall, and it’s really cool if you just take a moment to actually listen to it instead of yawning. Give it a chance. Annddddd, I remember one of the kids who came on to play violin, and who ended up making it to the finals, the judges had said after his performance of a pop song (he was actually pretty good - he was also like 12) I expected you to come out here and play some boring music like ode to joy, but this was so much better. *cue applause*

Then as soon as they get out of the intro they get cut off to get told they were boring. The whole thing threw away any chance of showing talent just to exploit them as people for the drama they created by only taking one of them. Also I have a hunch that the producers told the violin player she had to play Summer and made her learn it one day. I'm just making that up, but it still seems possible enough to make me mad.

Piano is way more than just the notes; there is so much going on you have to apply to those notes you press. You come to the interview w your suit and resume, but you get the job w your personal expression, character, qualifications, experience, and how you articulate.

I was an extra behind the scenes for this show once (when they do the backstage interviews that get a bunch of non-contestants to sit around behind the camera to make the room look fuller), and you will not BELIEVE how scripted everything is. Those cringey interviews at the beginning? They ask the contestant a question, the contestant answers honestly, and then a producer tells them what to actually say using only a fraction of their genuine answer and films that version. And those terrible audience reactions? A lot of times they use reactions to a different act and splice them in. They even have the audience cheer, boo, etc before the show even starts so they have clear audio to dub in wherever they see fit.

Exactly, some of the cuts to audience members are reactions happening in-between preformances when nothing is going on. Unfortunately you have to take those with a grain of salt. They also can add a layer of clapping and shouts to make audience reactions sound bigger than it really was. It's not fake all the time, but it definitely is enough to make the show not thrust worthy.

Honestly I’m disappointed in the violin girl. I can’t think to imagine how much practice was given into the piece she and her friend did, then only to be left behind because the judges wanted the violinist more. It must have been heartbreaking for the pianist because she was left behind, by her friend, her *partner* . Man...

Not to mention, I feel as though the only reason the violinist was the one brought back was because she was the one playing the melody when I think it might have actually been her timing and counting that caused the entire piece to sound scrambled and off. If anything, and if necessary to separate them, both of them should have performed again, not just the violinist.
@Ziaberry

I have a conspiracy theory which is probably a stretch but then again everything on reality tv is a stretch: The violin girl was going to audition alone all along, but to stir up drama for ratings, the producers grabbed some random pianist, put them together and said "act like you're friends who are auditioning together" and that's why they both sounded so disconnected during the perfomance, because they had never rehearsed together before. Then the producers could tell the judges "okay now let's pretend to call back violin girl because we like her better"

That's the thing, though, the average guy doesn't know the time signatures and exact notes for classical pieces, the average person isn't even really that precise at telling similar notes apart. So if you want to impress a room full of people who don't know music then you need to either play something fast and technical-sounding or pull out a crazy gimmick to get their attention, because all actual hard nuance is going to be lost on someone who doesn't understand the mechanics behind music.
