It is sad to hear that you are leaving Japan? Anyway best of luck for you both! I am a Sri lankan German married to a Japanese girl and we are living in Germany for last 42 years happily. We have two grown up son's who were born in Germany.in Germany almost a every rode has it's bicycle parths.and they are very safe. I too ride a lot for my hobby. For you as an American it can be a good choice to live in Germany 😀. this is just my idea don't misunderstand.

I've been living in Panama City for several years now, it's a nice place to stay if you don't mind hot climate. 😁 Share several pieces of information as a reference: 1. If you are fully vaccined, you can neglect the 14-day quarantine process now, which is good for you to be able to travel around immediately. 2. There're fewer tourists in Panama since last March than past, which has been a big shock for the economic here, as most Panamanians depends on the business related with tourists or the regional HQ offices here. Although it's tough period, but it's a fact for most of the countries depending on tourism currently. 3. Panama City has several international schools, e.g. ISP, BSI, MET..., you may check with them in advance to see whether you're interested in their style and their vacancy. One good thing about Panama is there're lots of foreigners here. 4. Most people here are very friendly. Traveling around at daytime is safe for most area. At night only several neighborhoods will be a safe choice, which cannot be compared with Japan's safety at night. Lower expectation on this part maybe good. 5. Lifestyle is slow in Panama, be ready for that. Wish you guys good luck and safe travel!

I'll give the same humble advice I did last time you posted a video about your options.Renew your work contract for one more year and stay in Japan. You both speak the language, you both can work there, it is a safe country with a good health system. Now is not the time to take risks.You are both young, there is plenty of time for ventures in other countries once covid has past. I know it's tough putting your plans on hold for another year, but we are all in a similar situation. After another year in japan you will be able to relocate to Vietnam. Best wishes.

Sigh.. Teaching jobs in Thailand pay nothing, and they want you to work on your tourist visa. I was last there in 2012, and they were really cracking down on back to back visas. I taughf in MY for a year. Same crap pay but with a high cost of living in K L. Indonesia may have a lower cost of living, but I doubt the pay will support you. Latin American countries are closer to the USA. Many of the natives already speak English. Being a native speaker is not a big deal. Number 1: you need a job that pays enough to live on. I'm no winner at life.....but this is going to end up with you back in the US and Thoung back in Vietnam.

You two remind me of my daughter and son in law who have recently gone through a major move from South Africa (for different reasons) . The number of hoops they had to jump through and obstacles are insane , but last week they finally landed in Germany to begin their new life . What about Taiwan? You know Japanese, you may be able to get work in hotels. We have large numbers of Vietnamese living here, too. There's always English teaching here as well if you want to get started and live it up on the bike. The cycling here is amazing! There's the KOM challenge in the fall every year and it cheap to travel around the whole island + it's very safe. Just a thought. You may have other places you want to travel to like you said, but Taiwan is a good spot to be if you want to fly around to other Asian countries on the cheap. Hope it all works out for you, man. Good luck with your move. Whatever the decision is, just don't get separated. Given what is taking place with COVID, you never know what travel restrictions might come up. An American friend who has a business in Phuket went back to the States for a visit and could not return to Thailand due to COVID and travel restrictions. He is waiting it out while the business is not really being properly looked after.

Crime is directly linked to poverty in most cases. Japan has avoided a lot of social problems over the last 25 years only by letting its debt spiral out of control. Low immigration might help the crime rate, too, but its also part of the reason the 2020s and 2030s will be so tough economically.

as an indonesian, if you want to stay in jakarta, the vaccination rate in jakarta are getting better day by day. but only central jakarta (SCBD area) that really support great cycling area. if your want to move to another suburban area, you can go to south tangerang especially under developer area, because this area support foreign lifestyle. for bali area, this is the super safe place for foreign lifestyle. but honestly, i think its better to go to panama rather than indonesia rn. maybe you can travel to SEA on 2022. wish you all the good luck!!

Ultimately, it’s what you both truly want and desire will decide what is best. A really tough decision for sure as Panama is both scary and exciting option. Pandemic sure adds huge wrinkle. If it was me, I would hold out for Vietnam but vaccine rollout there could be too long of a wait but you can say that for many of the countries in your options. All the best in whatever both decide.

If your mid term plan is to go to Vietnam then short term it makes sense to stay in Asia. What if you go to Panama and after a few months they go into lockdown. What is the healthcare like in Panama if things go downhill. In the current situation I think it is managing risk and if you want to go to Vietnam then it makes sense to stay in Asia, save you money on the flights as well. If your plan is to go from Panama to US eventually then I can understand, assuming Visa can be obtained. Good luck on your decision 👍

Thanks for the ride so far! TWC has been my pandemic mainstay on YT. Not a Japanophile or anything, I think the algorithm just dropped you on the front page one day because of my cycling vid diet (BikeBlogger is a cool one for ride-along commutes out of St. Louis, btw). But now I know the hiragana and katakana, prefectures, cities, popular dishes, etc. Lot of John Daub and Chris Broad watching also ensued. Broad actually dissed Nagoya a few times and I felt a bit protective in a vicarious way. 😁 I've been wanting to leave the US long-term for ages and last year was finally going to be the year, after many spent working and saving, so I know the sleepless nights and the frustration. Circumstances are also forcing me to make a decision soon. Also looked at Panama for similar reasons. The 180 days are a powerful incentive and it looks pretty attractive if you're not a heat and humidity or climbing wimp like me. Only place you didn't mention that came to mind is Kyrgyzstan. 60 days for both Vietnam and US but both are visa-free, and it's a stunning location for cycling or otherwise. Covid numbers are quite low. Chilly heading into winter, though. Thanks again for the ride and best wishes for your travels. Unless you guys get over-the-top KZbinr personalities and start using a butt mount or something, I will be watching. 😀 Loved both the night rides, and the cams look pretty sweet.

Thanks man! I think we have more cycling fans than Japan fans watching, but we'll soon find out haha. A lot of people in Japan who are not from Nagoya will often make fun of it. We love it here though, especially Nagakute. It's not very tourist friendly, but it's very comfortable for living. I hope you are also able to go through with your plans on leaving the US. A lot of people's plans or lives were ruined since last year, but we're ready to finally start moving forward. Panama is the most appealing now for us because of the long visa and warm weather in winter. I did notice Kyrgyzstan on the map, as well as some nearby countries like Turkey, which we are considering stopping by on our way back to Asia if we end up going the Panama route. Would prefer to start somewhere warm in winter. I'm not sure what a butt mount is, but I think I'll stick with my chest and backpack mounts for now LOL 😅

I lived in Panama for 2 years. Its pretty great especially if you derive revenue outside of Panama. In that case its in fact tax free! It is as well an incredible safe country compared to the rest of central and south America. Now however it will be difficult to bicyle in Panama City itself this is something you might struggle with!

I love Panama lived there for a month(US citizen). For me its such a short flight back to the states, great healthcare great food. Lots of english speakers but I picked up Spanish very quickly.

In my younger years I wanted to travel and live an exciting life, I left Europe and moved to the USA, stayed a lot longer than I originally thought, and now live in Japan. It's easy to choose the safe route, but on the other hand live your dream, dont have regrets. However make sure you think about priorities : Staying together, when you have children, what nationality will they be ? Better to have a safe home base or not , covid and weak passport issues are a concern, something to think about. However, wish you the best.

I'd say Panama City is probably the best place in Central America after leaving Japan, I lived in Costa Rica for 3 years, loved it, but Panama is definitely more developed and cycle friendlier. Currently living in Ho Chi Minh City and Panama would be a welcome relief right about now.

I highly recommend that you ship items that won't incur import charges, by boat, via Japan Post, and soon, since it takes between 2 and 4 months for your luggage to arrive. It's super duper useful. I shipped six boxes in April for under 40,000 JPY and got it all Stateside here in Austin no sweat. Good luck with the move! (happy to help in any way I can)

About your flight from Japan to Panama...you can fly with Aeromexico..they don't do a scale in the US so your wife can fly without problems from Japan to Mexico and then to Panama

Make the move out of Japan! I left after living there for about 11 years, it was a tough move, but I am super happy I did it.

Covid issue is not in control in Panama right now. My family is from Panama I live in the US. But it would be great if you make it. Right now they have restrictions on days you can go out. And Panama is not very bike friendly but plenty of nice areas for walking. beaches area are beautiful

Thanks for your video, I'm kind of in the same boat. I have 3 years left on my uni contract but it's not too early to start thinking about what's next and I'm getting too old to constantly be moving around. I have a master's from a top 5 uni in Japan and I'm also from the u.s. but I heard degrees earned outside of the u.s. aren't attractive to u.s employers. Anyway, I hope you figure something out! These are challenging times...

Hi Cruise! I’m currently living in Phuket, Thailand (born and raised here!). Cycling wise, it’s a great place with a fair mix of mountain and flat - not many dirt trails though. If you have ridden in Vietnam, I assume it will be similar in term of the motor traffic (maybe slightly less mopeds here?). As for COVID situation, it is currently in the “yellow zone” now. Number of new cases have been steadily going down for the past week, but I wouldn’t put it in the “green zone” just yet. Vaccination is still behind, but maybe improved in coming months. To move or to stay, I’m sure you both have your own reasons, so best wishes to both of you! Will continue to follow on KZbin :)

Thanks for the update! We hope things will improve over the next few months and for now we're just planning a temporary visit. I did find some nice MTB trails there the last time I visited and was pleasantly surprised.

A difficult decision for you both to make. My wife is Japanese, I've visited on a number of occasions, last time included a side trip to Nagoya to visit a friend. Have enjoyed your channels, brought back many fond memories. Your channels are the only Japan based ones I make a point of regularly watching. The Japan content will be missed. Like the conversational nature of them & Thuong's flaneur approach. Sure anything you do will be entertaining & educating. Thanks & best wishes.

Usually for many, Japan is about 70% likeable stay for good there. I will be in that 70% because i feel so good just even walking around even with low income.

Im happy for you guys, and ill be following you guys no matter where. Hope you can still post once a week prior to the move, let us know how you guys are feeling each week prior to the big move. COVID or not, my wife and I along with our little son are planning to move back to Japan indefinitely. I still wonder why I moved back to the states in the first place :( We set a date for May 2022. I dont plan to stay another year in the US. This is also cool that you and your wife and us will be moving the same year. I have an Indian passport and my wife Vietnamese :(. Btw, Thailand only gives 30-day visa-free option for Vietnamese people so might be a problem extending visa after that for Thuong. The education visa is not that easy to get anymore especially for Vietnamese people. Few people I know who I met because of cycling moved to Bali. Everything will change again once the Lambda variant reaches Asia. It has been 5 weeks since I last cycled and 4.5 weeks since I have been outside my apartment except twice to test but that was just outside my apartment. I had hoped the test would be a bit far away so I could get excuse to walk but nope.

My 2 penny suggestion. Please don’t move to an new country during this covid times. Rather extend the stay for one more year and move to Vietnam only when things are fine there. If you want to stay in Thailand/Indonesia/Panama, May be you can stay in Japan for an year more. Having said that you are the best person to decide

Love your videos. I think this is my first comment on this channel, but I've been watching your videos for 2 years now. I too was working in different places in the past 10 years (Hong Kong, Sydney, now in Toronto, originally from Vancouver), so I understand your thinking processes. I think you can't go wrong moving to different places as you two probably understand given Japan is not your home countries. Even if the experience suck, it is still a great learning experience and another location in the world checked off your to-go/to-experience list! Panama sounds wonderful, I've never been there but it seems like a good country from what I've heard. I just recently had my first kid so probably will stay in Toronto for good (gone are my youthful travelling days :D), but I will definitely continue watching you guys, cycling videos in Panama sounds interesting (especially in English XD). It has to scary moving to a country that you've never been to. You two are very resourceful and I sure you will do just fine. Just think, you two will be that much closer to USA, and we,ii be able to see the country of Panama in your videos. Now for the cons, Pick-pocketing and mugging is a common issue in Panama City, so tourists are advised to exercise caution, particularly in crowded areas such as train and bus stations, airports and on busy streets, as well as in public transport. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 4 Travel Health Notice for Panama due to COVID-19, indicating a very high level of COVID-19 in the country. Sad to hear that you are leaving Japan. Planning to go Japan when borders open again soon. Would prefer that you stay around in South East Asia which nearer to us. Panama seems too far and I am not sure about the situation and the jobs there now. Hopefully you all are able to stay well there.

Oh my goodness, be sad to see you guys leave Japan, hoping that I will get to see you both in Japan when everything is open backup. Panama is a good idea, no matter where you go its gonna be adventurous, can you get her a visa for USA while in Panama? Lots of us are kinda in limbo in terms of our travelling to other nations of the world. You gotta do what you gotta do, wisdom and risks taking is gonna be active. I'm super happy for you guys albeit slightly confused... if you both love life in Japan why not stay as to not disrupt the continuous 10 year stay for permanent residency and then apply for that ? I can understand Vietnam for Mrs. TWC (as it is also fairly close to the East Asian countries) but Panama is really out there...

Probably because they(she) want to own their house, so that they have secure and permanent place to live and raise kids. In Japan they will most certain never have that. She want to go in Vietnam, and he need to go with her, or lose her. And they don't wanna wait another year to do so.

Originally PR was our goal, but that changed recently and we decided Japan was not the best long term investment for us. I talk about this more in our video about Japanese citizenship and permanent residency.

Of course, but Panama will just be a temporary stay for us. I don't feel safe to build a future in Japan without citizenship, and I'm not willing to give up my own citizenship to get it.
