GREAT VIDEO, 6:00 in is dead on my problem the last couple years. I’ve been working with someone to get an upward angle of attack and when I get it right it’s 40-50 yards better. Seeing people on KZbin have less ball speed and tons more distance made me realize I was just going about it wrong. 175 ball speed with 265 carry isn’t where it’s at lol.

One of the best, if not The Best, videos on distance. I especially appreciated the perspective on the relationship of distance off the tee to handicap. I've neglected driver fundamentals I used to know and, possibly most importantly, forgot to be athletic in the driver swing. I'm old but can still hit an 8 iron 160 but my driver has lost 50 yards. Can't wait to start implementing your fundamentals and to restart training an athletic swing. This video was full of knowledge and inspiration. Thanks !!!

Really relevant video to me. Was just fitted for a driver after nearly 80 shots, 24 had a negative Angle of attack. Here are my attack angle stats for the different clubs: Ping G430Max - 40 shots. 15 w/ negative attack angles. only one has an attack angle above 2.8 degrees. Qi10. all 11 shots were positive AoA, but the ball carried 13 yards less than the Ping. Sim2 Max: 1 of 7 with negative AoA. Carried 10 yds less than Ping AI Smoke: 2 of 9 negative AoA. None greater than 2 degree AoA. Carried 15 yds less than Ping. Current gamer 20 year old TM R580 : 6 of 13 negative AoA carried 19 yards less than g430

Great video. Lots of things for me to try in the range as my driving has always been the weakest part of my game. Never struggled for distance but always seemed to be swinging to the max and that led to some lost balls off the tee (always to the right/slice). Would love to see a wedge one of these vids.

I used to be very active with my movement to start my swing. Then I started watching too much KZbin and got away from it. My driver lost so much, but I thought if I worked on creating the text book swing, I’d get it back and more. It actually led me to hurting my back. I just went back to staying looser and starting my swing with motion and really stepping into my downswing. Instantly starting hitting it farther and straighter.

Facinating video lads, love it 🙂 I think we are all constantly battling how we should stand & address the ball as well as ball position. I am really focusing on what Ian talked about in the beginning, dropping the right shoulder and keeping the right elbow a bit lower. I also focus on 'reaching out' with driver to shallow out my swing and encourage the flatter or upward strike. It works for the most part and I'm chuffed, after seeing Ian tell people to do the same, that I worked this out early on. It has helped me achieve higher launch for sure and a wee bit more yardage too. Put it this way, I am hitting the ball the same distance or more on some occasions than I was when i first started playing golf 20yrs ago when I was 31yrs old.

Great video. I have struggled with my driver for too long and what I get instructed by my coaches and numerous youtube videos are compressed into simple 3 bullet points in this video. In my struggles i have come to a point where I am exploring into gears and how they might effect my swing for speed and consistency. At the moment I am exploring the counter balance offerings from shafts and grips and butt plugs. Recent launch of Synystr CB shaft has triggered this. I wonder if you guys can do a review of these shafts plus give a more indepth insight to counter balancing your gear. I did see one of your old videos on this topic 5 years ago, but I feel there needs to be a refresh on this topic with the recent manufacturers relative focus on this topic. Cheers and appreciate all the work you do in these interesting topics, I really enjoy everyone of these videos.

Much needed video guys, well done. From a personal perspective, I know I'm giving up distance, most probably because I revert to type with my safe swing. It gets short, it's a little bit down but it's safe. Funnily, I was at the range and said right, no pressure get the weight shifting, the club wider, higher and longer and voilà high draws. You know as well as I do, taking that to the course though is all about those 6 inches between the ears. Now that would be an interesting video. How about getting a sports psychologist in the studio?

Agreed that Distance is key to lowering the handicap. Was working on this with my coach last month (trying to get to 110 mph Club from 95 mph Club) and looking at Arcoss it says the same thing as well. Need to work on getting the angle of attack better for the driver and the irons (driver still in neg numbers and irons could be shallower)

I suffer from negative aoa and hitting down with driver. I know that but it's hard to change! Working on it but as a result of this my last couple of fits have been ultra stiff low launch shafts and 8 degree heads to reduce spin. Gives the best outcome for a poor swing but I know it's not ideal. Time to work on the swing..... This will help thanks.

Why would anyone doubt speed and handicap. I play with a bunch of legit fast guys. 175-205 range for bs. I float in the 150 range. And while I play off low single digit. And have a decent short game that group of players will beat me by at least 3 strokes and up to 10. The difference is not off the tee in penalties or up and downs or total putts the difference is proximity to hole on second shots. Not even hit greens just proximity. Speed allows for that.

Careful with Dr Scholls on the carbon face TM drivers...it has some crazy reaction and is super hard to clean. I find it barely even leaves an impression from the ball. It's like the lacquer on the face is causing the spray to not stick correctly - at least in my experience.

How can you explain the difference between launch monitor numbers and real world? I have similar club data (attack angle, launch, spin) with more speed (about 115 club and around 165-170 ball speed) but I don’t hit it as far as Ian is hitting in the video. On Trackman, I average about 275 carry and just about 300 total, but on course my total drives are like 280 max. Same with irons where I don’t see the same distance on the course as I do on the monitor. Is that a me problem and I need a lesson/fitting or is that a launch monitor estimation just being a bit off?

I have too much hip and shoulder turn and my pro is trying to wind me back to make it more compact so I gain more accuracy. Because the amount of turn I have means I overswing and can't get back to the ball in the correct sequence. Timing goes and loose a chunk of distance because the spin is up. Now, I'm trying to shorten everything and hit up on it. I was hitting it like an iron shot sometimes and body gets in front of the ball and flare it right and weak. Just horrible.
