Really good video. The Bond has just become available in the UK and appears to be selling well in the online stores. I have managed to purchase one and I am impressed by the light weight and sound design. It is also good that we can legally carry it in the UK without having to provide 'Good Reason' to the Police.
@davidwentireland
@davidwentireland 3 жыл бұрын
Careful! My understanding is that it is not legal. It might not have a locking blade but you have to fold back the handles to close the knife - the blade is locked open when the handles are closed and it takes 2 steps to close the knife and this, sadly, makes it illegal in the UK and Ireland. If the blade was on the outside when the handles are closed like it is on the Wave then it would be ok.

Thank you for addressing the one problem I had with the original Leatherman in your review and the main reason I switched to Gerber, the square edge when using the pliers. I am a machine technician and I do use the pliers many times when doing electrical work on most machines. When they wire a machine at the factory they use DIN rail terminal blocks and the wires go into wire ducts with maybe an inch to two inches between them. Maneuvering the wires into the correct block in that tight an area is extremely difficult by hand. With the uncomfortable grip Leatherman had for using the pliers it made the task harder than it needed to be, so I looked for a more comfortable multitool and found it with Gerber. Glad to see that someone at Leatherman woke up and did something about it.

Lots of Europeans do in fact carry locking multitools. Maybe in a tool kit. And left in the truck boot when going down the high street or into the pub. In Israel technically we cannot carry lock blades, and we are limited to 10cm blades. But in reality the police do not bother hikers, campers, tradesmen, journeymen etc. That said, going into a private business, place of entertainment, school, government building with ANY knife is a no go. But that is true in many places in America--which can be very city-specific. SOG Pocket Power Pliers was non-locking, and very good. It was inexpensive, and had the geared force multiplier pliers. I have 40 or more multitools, and 60 or more Victorinox SAK models. So I don't need the Bond. But I would buy it anyway! I made it to almost age 60 before I ever even held a lock blade in my hand. So for most uses the Bond would do me. Man toy that is also practical. That's enough for me. I'd still like to see a Bond-style Leatherman designed for gentleman urban, civilian, non-trades carry. Knife, pick, pry, fine file etc. Thanks for the great review! Cheers from Israel

I knew I could count on you to catch my mistakes! You’re right about the depth measurement. Not sure how I messed that up. As far as the brake on the Rebar, I underestimated it slightly. It is closer to 80° - 85°. The Bond definitely has a tighter brake, which lends it to be more comfortable when using the pliers.

Awesome video! Atleast in Michigan the 3 inch knife law is also in effect. That a big reason for the popularity of the Spyderco Delica, its 2.99 inch blade is not considered a weapon in many states unless used as one. Great video! Im considering this one since I lost my old Leatherman Fuse and Wingman. Its crazy that the wingman is selling for $60 now on Amazon, it was $20 when it was newer, atleast thats what a review said fron 2013. It wasnt a super premium product but it was enough for me to fix arcade machines at the job I had without having to haul around a toolbox. Thanks for the review, and wow its great that new multi tools that are so good are coming out!

Gerber gets locking and one hand use for pliers 3.gerber gets the pliers usability because if you stress the pliers to cut and the item doesn’t cut, it just pinches and you can’t reset to open. 4. Gerber for locks 5. Rev gets a point for bigger blade 5. More tools on gerber but by default for being bigger

As far as UK friendly tools I have some comments as many look at the Bond for this reason. Besides the Bond consider: In the UK a blade-less multitool seems like it would be appealing. I mean a bunch of locking tools and you can just carry any non- locking knife you like maybe a SAK Compact if your tool doesn't have scissors for example or a SAK Walker if your multitool doesn't have a saw, or a SAK Waiter so you can open a beer or bottle of wine without getting a bigger tool out... There is still a tool-less Rebar and there used to be a tool-less Fuse or get a SOG and just remove the knife, replace it with something else if you wish as they sell individual impliments. If you could find a Leatherman Leap it allows you to remove the knife and is lightweight... Also there was a Leatherman Kick that had no locking blades including the knife and some (few) had pocket clips (sold separately). It just had screwdrivers, a knife and of course and plier head but it was light. Speaking of old tools if one could find a PST, PST 2, Sideclip, or even a Gerber MPT (copy of PST) they'd all work in the UK I believe. So I hope I gave you some UK friendly ideas to ponder...

I’ve carried a leather man most of my adult life, I’ve never given the police any reason to question or search me it’s pretty simple. Actually, Europe has some very diverse laws. For example, in France, carrying any knife is considered illegal unless you have a good reason to, which is up to the appreciation of the police (you can explain why you need a swiss knife for camping, but probably not a 7 inch knife in a night club). Some countries have blade length limits. Other countries have locking and deployment limits. It seems that this tool is marketed at the UK, which is hardly representative of the entire EU.

In most countries in Europe locking blades and tools are legal. The UK is part of Europe but is not Europe. 3 inch non locking blade is not the norm outside of the UK. In fact Europe outside the UK doesn't use inches but the metric system instead. Even the UK officially switched to metric but they are taking a long time adopting to it. It is very well likely that Leatherman had the UK in mind because if it's legal in the UK you can be pretty sure it's legal anywhere in Europe or the world even. However your assessment of the tool is spot on. They should have left a bit more metal on the knife blade so it stays fully closed also since it has that large nail nick to open it, making it easy to overcome some resistance when opening. I have the original PST and PST-2 (and other originals) and this is indeed an improved version of the original.

Not all countries in Europe has those blade restrictions. Here in Czech Republic (or Czechia) there are like no restrictions on knife blades. I mean you can carry OTFs, automatic knives, daggers, bowies, or even swords or executioner axes and it is not against the law (as long as you don’t threaten others with them). However, it’s true that some countries have strict blade restrictions. (Some of them even banned carying pepper sprays and tasers, which is beyond my understanding.)

@@romandobias4167 In Germany the restriction is that the folding knife must require two hands to open, there’s no restriction on the length of the knife blade for folding knives and it’s allowed to lock. If it doesn’t lock it’s also ok if you can open it with one hand. The exception are knifes that are specifically designed to be weapons (daggers, bayonets,…), those aren’t allowed in public. If you have a good reason for carrying the knife (work, sports, traditional knives, filming KZbin videos etc.) you can also carry stuff which otherwise wouldn’t be legal to carry in public.

You can't. It might not have a locking blade but you have to fold back the handles to close the knife i.e it takes 2 steps to close the knife and this, sadly, makes it illegal in the UK and Ireland. If the blade was on the outside like it is on the Wave then it would be ok.

@Chop Wood Agreed but I was talking about being able to carry without having to defend "with good reason". People need to be careful about carrying this without "good reason". Carrying it while clearly out camping - probably ok. Carrying it into the nearest pub or supermarket to your campsite - probably going to cause you problems (if you get caught with it).

Thank you for the great review. Repays my waiting. PST knife sticks out its point when given an amount of impulse, but holds its position in gentle shakings in normal use. Great for people who live in restricted areas. I love this multitool, my first Leatherman was a Kick with a pocket clip. But for me it's a step back to use a slip joint. Excellent review. I agree entirely, this is definitely NOT a step back. This will have a big market even here in the US. Leatherman's previous budget oriented tools really missed the mark in my view. They looked and felt cheap. Now the cheaper 50 dollar range tools from other brands which are horrible will now tremble in their boots. I am really glad to see this will work with that adapter that slides over the philips driver. I got one of those for my supertool 300. So I no longer care about the lack of my preferred Wave style bit driver.

Nice "friends in europe" intro. Agreed, that some European countries unfortunately tend to judge tools, rather then actual people (criminals) for misbehaving. And so locking knives etc. are prohibited. Other tools will follow sooner or later. Hope that one day they'll realize that it's not a tool who commits crime but people. Glad I live in Czech Republic, one of few European countries where I can legally cary Leatherman Surge, with one-hand-open blades, lockable blades and tools, which is big enough to make sense for anything more then just opening letters and cardboxes. I need sturdy reliable tool, not toy. But for those misfortune ones this Bond seems to be a decent alternative. God bless Texas.

I'm in the US and I was interested in this. I don't do real work any more I'm in an office lol But I still like to have a multitool, and the idea of a new PST was enticing. I wish they'd re-do the Sideclip too, not the most capable multitool ever made but so much utility in such a small package, I should have bought like six of them when they were $25 apiece Even when I did do real work, I used slipjoint multitools for years without thinking about it, just because the locking is better doesn't mean the oldschool way still doesn't work I'm one of those fogeys that prefers real dedicated drivers over the bits, just works better for me personally

I prefer dedicated drivers as well, especially Leatherman's square phillips. The fact they make an option where you can use an adapter to have bits just in case makes it even better. I use a Rebar myself, but I do have the bit card as well. It's just nice to have a fully functional tool all by itself without needing anything else and the extended utility stuff being totally optional instead of required for use.
