The Pipe Hitch is one of several different friction hitches that are designed to lift cylindrical items, such as pipe, in a linear direction. This knot will grip fast onto smooth surface pipe. It is also a knot that is especially useful in the construction trades for lifting cylindrical objects at heights.

Looks like a variation of the icicle hitch used in climbing. It was demonstrated by a man using a fireman's pole hanging from above. He tied on, above the end then stepped off the ladder and hung, swaying below.

Once you attach it to the fence post, what do you use for leverage? I just paid someone else $200 to remove 10 old fence posts.

You can use this just fine for vertical (in relation to your video) loads as well. We use a slight modification for rigging. The wraps provide so much surface area and gripping strength around the bar, like you said stronger than the rope itself.

What modification do you use?

Hey, great videos, thanks. Question: do you ever use the Siberian hitch? It's one of my favourites for making a ridgeline. Just wanted to know your opinion on it. Thanks

I know this only prevents slippage in one direction laterally, but can you load it away from the pole too? Was considering a simple clove hitch, but wanted to prevent lateral movement (only concerned about one direction) 4 inch pipe close to end Was also considering the icecicle or I suppose just a simple prussic Load may not be constant.

Don't try it with plastic rope. It doesn't bite. Just unravels.

What's good for plastic ropes then? Thanks.
