Krome Studios went back to the drawing board some time after they initially made their first(?) prototype for TY 2 which was essentially not at all like the final game but more like the first game. SO MUCH content was cut. Some of which are still in the files of the PC version. (You can ask the TY speedrunning Discord about that.) It's hard to say if the game would've been any better if Krome had stuck with the final game's concepts since the beginning of development, but it sure wouldn't have been rushed as badly.

I loved playing this game as a kid and just like you, this was my first Ty game. I still haven't completed any of the others lol. First game was great, I didn't like the town setup in Ty 2 as much but it was still a fun game. I feel like the first game's level environments were a little better too. Though I will say that Ty 2 blessed us with a better voice actor for Sly because while I like him a lot, goodness GRACIOUS his voice in Ty 1 didn't fit. But with that trade-off we lost Ty's OG voice (Who also voiced Sly), which was better than Ty 2's Ty voice.

I feel like you would have really liked Ty 1 better. It had more of a cohesive story (Ty's family was locked in some sort of alternate dimension whose name escapes me, Ty was therefore raised by a family of bilbies and one day discovers the truth about his family from a Bunyip Elder), the hub world was more appealing and less of a bother than Ty 2's town setup, and also the mission levels I think had an overall better design. There wasn't really any of the mecha stuff, I think they just wanted to add more variety to the gameplay (but if you ask me, the game didn't really need it because it's already pretty solid as is). One of the co-creators is also a pretty cool dude, he's got a Deviantart account and you can tell he's got a lot of passion for his game. We had Ty 1 and 2 growing up and they were a lot of fun. (Also I had a minor crush on Sly growing up, lol)

As someone who used to really not enjoy Sonic Unleashed to it being one of their favourite games I disagree. The main issue with Unleashed was the jarringly different playstyles, that whilst both stick to the platformer genre, they require a different set of skills that most people who originally played the game probably weren't used to. Ty 2 keeps the same style, but foolishly relies on the mere broad appeal of giant mechs to make up for the lack varied gameplay. The Werehog's gameplay is incredibly varied from level to level, but are incredibly time consuming if not done to peak standard.
