Today we dive into legendary English rock / alt. band THE CURE. "Lullaby" was the lead single off the band's eight studio album Disintegration released April 1989. The song was a Top Ten Hit around the globe including reaching number 5 on the UK singles chart, the highest-charting single in their home country!

I’m from 1973, and growing up, Robert Smith always creeped me out! But in the last 10-15 years or so, I’ve come to really appreciate their music more. He’s still a weird dude, though 😉

This is one of the best Cure songs ever. The drums are electronic-sampled. Roger O'Donnell played all the sting-orchestral sounds on an Emulator II sampler. Rodger spent a lot of time to get or sample the perfect sounds for this song. Check out Chvrches's How Not To Drown. That song has Robert Smith as a guest performer and cowriter.

Lullaby is one of their creepiest songs for sure. They probably thought that Lullaby would be too disturbing and "special" for American sentimentalities, haha.

The drums on the album are live…for some reason they added electronic drums for the single

@@mattbelinski7760 America seems to ban a lot of things for no reason to Europeans, probably an executive decision based on some study or fear of upsetting middle America.

I grew up with the cure in my mind and soul, since boys don't cry, forest, 100 years, etc, after few albums with different vibe, . Disintegration got them back to the initials dark wave. Loved it! Love your reaction as well

Just a super atmospheric track. I think with the make-up its partly to obscure what he actually looks like - hes not overly keen on fame and I think the Cure Robert Smith and the real life Robert Smith are sort of different people if you know what I mean.

I Love The Cure, but this song was so strange (even in Latam when not anyone understand the lyrics) but it gaves an odd sensation....and the video was so dark....This is a song that I enjoy better in my car alone, hahah I always thought and still do, that The Cure should be one of the most important bands in my life. I was the classical guy that never wore black and was always well combed and dressed, but alone or in the parties loved The Cure. Loved them!!! A couple of years ago, just before the Covid, they came to Chile and I finally see them live in concert. It was funny to see very young people and complete families singing and loving the moment. Regards from Chile! 🙂

I appreciate the quality of the sound on your videos (sound engineer/musician???) and the introspection of your dialogue. Some other ‘first-type-reaction-videos’ don’t seem to care about the sound/visual quality. Anyway, my ‘two cents’. Keep up the good work! If you want to branch out a little, I recommend VNV Nation, Apoptygma Berzerk, Covenant, or IAMX! Thx :)

this the only band i know who has no airplay and you ask peeps if they know them, they say no, then comes to your city and sells out a stadium, lol. .and Robert was probably the one who started the goth scene with that kind of makeup.

Yeah loved this song from the first time I heard it and the video just really pushed it over the top for me, Idk if any other video would of worked..it got a lot of play on MTV back in the day. I think you're correct about the drums, lots of drummers were trying them around that time...as for the heavy make-up, that's just The Cure....and i think it was a thing for lots of British bands back then, glad you liked the song...real easy to get lost in

Beautiful song. The Cure had a big following in the UK but were massive in Ireland, the local club in my mothers home town in Ireland even had a segment just for The Cure (Back in the days when a small town in Western Ireland had one club and had to cater for all tastes).

... and that is the thing with older music, you have to put yourself in the song.... there was more effort to make an experience/a story back then imo. I bring up "storytelling" again, but that is what it is. It wasn't just the sound. Like if you went to a gig you had that same experience.

The snare is almost definitely a sample. The version here is the 7" single mix and the snare is the most obvious difference compared to the album mix which features a softer and more natural snare sound. I feel there may also be some additional hi-hat in the 7" mix

When you mentioned about songs possibly becoming stale, their album "Mixed Up" gives each track, a more electronic dance feel to them rather than the rock feeling of the originals, but without completely changing the songs to a point they aren't The Cure any more.

Ahh yes, The Cure. I did not appreciate this band in the 80s even tho I liked some of their songs back then. It was always because Robert Smith reminded me of the creepiest version of Edward Scissor hands. This video is literally like the musical version of The X-Files. 🤣
