It's a shame because there are a lot of great and unique environments to explore. There are some games though, we got a Forza Horizon and a couple lesser known games. Man, starting this review, you made me feel bad for not ever really getting into this game much before reminding me exactly why it never clicked with me. The character designs, especially the bosses are fantastic although the side mouths always kind of weirded me out for some reason haha. I loved the writing, but the worlds always felt so empty to me and it makes me think about Rareware games and how some of them got it so right. The way Banjo 1 has smaller areas, but everything in them gets put to use and you are guided around the different areas with the notes and then the music was just unbeatable for me personally. It makes me happy to see you talk positively about Banjo, even though I know you weren't much of a Nintendo kid growing up, I was lucky enough to have the best of both worlds and Banjo 1 remains one of if not my favorite platformer of all time. I'd love to see you do a review on it one day. I never really liked Tooie that much, but I did find a lot to appreciate in Nuts and Bolts, even though it was a different kind of game. Great review from such an underrated KZbinr! Keep up the good work.

Cheers! It's a shame, Ty is still fun but the level size is a major problem. The only N64 Rareware game I've put time into is DK64, I've actually only ever played up to Treasure Trove Cove in Banjo but it really stood out to me as how good a compact beach stage can make every inch count.

I'm glad that you were able to find that feeling of being at home with the game's atmosphere, I had a feeling you'd enjoy the Australian level themes even if they got kinda lazy with the repetitious themes. Though it's sad to see that while the game started out strong, it kinda broke apart after due to maybe being a bit too ambitious. The part where you were saying that the levels are just way too wide and can feel tiring and daunting to travel on is something I fear if I ever get into developing a game. I have a character I want to make into a platform game series some day and the one thing I worry about is 1), where I would want it to be linear like Sly 1 or open world like Sly 2 Spyro the Dragon and B), if I did go open world, making sure that the levels aren't too big to the point where it feels daunting and boring to traverse on. Since it was such a big thing for you, I think what could've helped is if you brought up an open world game that you felt did it right where it wasn't too big or too small. Gotta say though, I laughed when you referenced back to Donkey Kong 64, I know that game really tried your patience LOL Anyway this was great, I can't wait to see you review the next two games throughout your Thylacine adventure haha.

I had this game with worms mayhem, so it was great to switch around between the two. Other built story around huge maps and the other had it similar, but incorporated more strategy to get through. I guess game that I love, but probably not going to get together with anymore is populous the beginning. I had the demo disc for it on ps1 and I was in love with creative imaginative plays by myself or with my sister, so the times I was alone I was able to put a spell on the opposing tribes and just play around with the maps or even just taking over the planet there. Which is why I love big maps... At least I used to. Might have some kind of burn out for games, but let's not give this subject any more space here. So as older kid than during the times of my populous days, these two games took the paintbrush away from me and showed the possibilities you could have with big maps. Which was spectacular. Different themes and feels, built up by using characters and music, lightning and color palettes. Small but important things constructing touching and immersive playgrounds. Some being more demanding while others leaving the baton for you.

Great review of the game, Jak! I’ve never played Ty so I can’t judge my opinion on it. Other games such as Spyro, Jak and Daxter and even Ratchet and Clank have open world levels with plenty of stuff to do in them and it never feels tiring to flip between them. Aside from Ty 4 on Steam, the next two sequels (Bush Rescue and Night of the Quinkan) are more open world in the style of Simpsons Hit and Run where you drive in a truck round a big area and you do missions for NPC’s. The opals are now used as currency and the thunder eggs are now just optional collectibles, kind of similar to a Hero’s tail. I’ve never played them, just getting off the Nitro Rad reviews LOL. See you next week and have a great fucking day! P.S. looking forward to the Grand Prix episode on Friday (Thursday night in UK hours)

I was honestly worried about watching this review. I had been playing through the game a while ago only to stop after the snowy mountain level, completely giving up on the game. Since then I always had a lingering feeling that I was missing something. That there was something wrong with me preventing me from truly enjoying the game. After watching the review you basically took the words out of my mouth, addressing the main complaints I had. Not only that, you pointed out issues that bothered me, but articulated them better than I could. You also helped me appreciate what the game does right, reminding me that there is still a great game in there. I'm excited to watch the rest of the series. I'll also try to finish the game in the near future. p.s. You'll need to redo your Top 10 Terrible Final Boss Fights. It's like Crash 2, but longer. And that's worse.
@SquareEyedJak5 жыл бұрын
Both mountain levels in this game are pretty bad. The first is massive with awkward ice physics. The second is somehow even bigger with a big cliff jump dead end and a chairlift to get back to the top... they might be the worst levels here unfortunately (well aside from maybe the last gauntlet). But yeah, the game still has some quality worth playing through the bad to experience. And on that Top 10 idea, I actually wanted to do a Top 10 Worst Final Gauntlet Levels, because I don't think I can even name a good one.

I remember the ads for this game making me instinctively hate it upon release :p I was a super bitter child when I saw them mock Crash/Spyro. Later down the line I got around to playing Ty 1 and 2 and I honestly enjoyed them for what they are. I feel like Ty was unfortunately timed, it was developed right between the ps1 and 2, I believe development dates back to 2000 and they were kinda stuck with the basic premises they had. In a weird way it reminds me of 40 Winks (Ps1), I loved it as a child but once I learnt that it was basically a rejected N64 game that eventually stumbled itself over to the Ps1 the lack of gameplay quality for its time suddenly makes sense.

Interestingly, if I recall correctly, he said in his review that he thought they should give people the option of being able to buy things if they want. I don’t think he has an issue with it If it’s only an option. You can unlock everything in CTR: NF without spending any money at all.

Actually no, my point was it's better to be honest about micro-transactions being implemented because at the time, it was so obviously built around that system despite them not being there. Transparency is better than being secretive about it. But I'm still disgusted that they're even there at all.

Square Eyed Jak ah, ok that makes a lot more sense. I misunderstood and was actually a bit confused that you weren’t more disgusted by them. I don’t have a problem with giving people the option of paying for shit like outfits etc but i think core things like players, karts etc should be purely unlocked through gameplay and/or skill.

@@SquareEyedJak In the end we all share that sentiment. Oh well, I thought we would get some of your very lovely rants but I myself don't consider a new SquareEyedJak video a disappointment, thanks for your content and the quick responses ❤

im just frankly disappointed of how scummy this "addition" to the game and what it could mean for the future of it specially when it finally comes to PC i will still get it but who knows how much of a Grind it will be by then

Just yesterday I 100% completed the HD version, and felt pretty much the same way. During the finale I kept asking myself if there were any cutscenes or something I missed because things elevated pretty quickly all of a sudden, then it all fell flat, especially the typical redemption arc with Shad-- I mean Sly, while also just introducing Roug-- I mean.. Actually yeah basically Rouge because I don't remember the goth bat's name. THEN the reveal of Metal Soni-- I mean Cy. Quite a mess. I felt like the shark and yeti bosses were in the wrong order too, since the yeti boss focuses on the flamerang, (which is your first elemental 'rang at that time) that would've made more sense, and the shark boss could've later made use of the icyrang by having to freeze the water to make platforms, another ability the game makes almost zero use of aside a collectable or two, which is a shame. Also the more casual players wouldn't be forced to fumble with the swimming controls so early on if they hadn't gotten used to it by then, not that the swimming is complicated but it's still a possible factor. The only conclusion I came to was the last third of the game being rushed due to time constraints, as was always an issue for these types of games back then, and even now. The bonus level felt like it was just cobbled together last minute to try and make up for such an underwhelming ending. This game as a whole feels like it was born purely from an idea, without thinking about what to really do with it, a trap that many games have fallen into. For the first game in the series though it's still pretty solid, here's hoping for the other games to get a HD version too.

Great video, really happy that you covered this game (and gonna watch your one for Ty 2 now). I'm glad someone else has that opinion about Sly Cooper being not suited to linear level design. I thought those games were okay, but was expecting to be able to sneak around a lot more, choose which paths to take, use different strategies to reach the objective such as climbing different walls, hiding in shadows, and using items to sneak into areas in many different ways. For Ty, I think a Spyro 2/3-style level design would have been good. A mostly-linear path but with room for exploration to go off track now and then to discover secrets. Sorry if I've missed a video, but have you played Yooka-Laylee? Those levels are INSANELY huge, if you thought Ty's were too much, they would do your nut in - as they did mine. What's worse, you NEED 100% to get to the final boss.
