The problem with negative criticism is that 9 times out of 10 the person words it as if it's a "demand", like "Don't use this feature/trait for your OC!" or "Your OC's colors are bad! Change them lol!" "Your OC is too OP! (no real explanation to explain exactly how though)". That's not really criticism, even if they're somewhat true, maybe if they said something like "Is there a particular reason you gave your OC this trait? Does it really help them stand out or is it just too much?" "You have a lot of clashing colors on your character, the colors are all trying too hard to gain individual attention. Did you ever try making different colored variations for you character just to see what they look like in different ways?". Criticism that legitimately makes the one receiving it question their own work is, in my opinion, the best way to do it.

I really don’t mind negative/constructive criticism, it can actually help you with your art and ocs! What really ticks me off though is when someone says “ew your oc is gross and stupid” without any reason for saying why. Like, that’s not helping, AT ALL. when i was younger, i thought it would be a good idea to make two alicorn sisters because i love the designs, but had it be that each one couldn't use the other's part, such as my first one having a broken horn so she couldn't use magic, and have the younger one have problems with flight so prefers using magic. In the end, I made the younger one a unicorn and the other a pegasus, Because I listened to others when they said my alicorns were mary sues, even if it was made so that they couldnt use one of the features. Also not only that but it was before we found out about twilight getting wings or cadence so i had thought they were born into the world, and now here I am, not even using the characters and instead using a hypogriff. - little off topic but eh thought I might as well say it.

As someone who draws, writes, and sings Constructive criticism is a MUST! In order to get better at either is to sometimes get opinions and advice from a third party. On the other hand, saying things like "oh I don't like your Oc" or "your Oc is a Mary Sue" doesn't help. You're not giving me reasons why this character is a mary sue, or advice on character design In conclusion, constructive criticism is very important and people should learn the difference between constructive and deconstructive criticism
@Dawnshade16 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Simply stating something is terrible and then not even saying why is not helpful in the slightest. In fact it can even devolve further into downright bullying behavior. Although I suppose we can also apply this to phrases like "I like this." or "You're OC is cool." while very kind and complementary, sometimes feel empty. Maybe I'm expecting too much but, I feel like balance between explain what's good and bad, as well as why is the best kind of criticism.

I always think before I say anything and then I'd go into detail like: "I don't like the eyes they are too big and too bright, try toning them down, it might help" etc. because I know how insanely frustrating it is to see: "your oc sucks" or "haha what a Mary Sue" comments that don't add anything to the conversation and that are not helping me improve because I don't know what I should change for you to like it. I feel like a lot of kids don't quiet understand that as most of that "it sucks" type of criticsm comes from younger people~

I just discussed with someone on DA and criticised the logic of the info lack of info of the person's OC and apparently took offense from me suggesting tutorials or stuff like references to make their characters better. And the person's oc was criticized for being similar to another person's oc (popular for, in an ironically cheap way, paying mainly do commissions more than making her own art) because of the blonde hair and hair style when in face value from the info I read, the two compared characters are nowhere alike at all. And a day later, you posted a video about this situation. This was way too well timed, whether it was a coincidence or fate or neither! While I grew to like my character's old appearance over time, I actually forced myself to make a huge "rebirth" and boy nearly 2 years ago, and boy I'm glad I did. I changed my OC, Varuu/Varuna mainly because she was literally a rip-off character of a canon character by design and to prevent any future comments that criticize the old design. I actually tried to change the clothes over time and it took 2+ years to actually give Varuna the whole re-makeover.

I've dealt with criticism all my life. My parents taught me to always give it my all and to do with %110 but there were a lot of things I simply wasn't good at and got teased about it. Even though my mom always pushed me to be active in sports (as everyone else in my family was athletic in some way) I always sucked at them and was constantly made fun of for being not as fast or strong as the other kids. Not even my gym teachers thought I was taking the activities seriously because I was that bad at them even though I really did push myself to my limit to just try and keep up with someone. Even outside of sports, there weren't many things I was able to do and thus was teased for it like socializing and understanding problems. There were a lot of times when I was too afraid to speak because I was so afraid of someone making fun of me for any little thing. The only time when I was never criticized was in art class as I was the star student and the art teacher's favorite. I was free to express myself and really show everyone what I could really do and everyone loved it. There were even several times when the other kids would stop working on the project just to watch me work. My art teacher often asked me to help her demonstrate what we were going to do and people absolutely loved it. When I discovered DeviantArt, I felt confident to share my artwork with others and even made some pretty cool friends on the site. However, I did occasionally run into those who would say some rather horrible things about my artwork and even call me lazy when I started trying out a new digital art style one of my friends on DeviantArt told me about. I wasn't really hurt by his criticisms but I was greatly annoyed by his claims as they made no sense. He'd say things like "this isn't art" or "you're so lazy you can't even draw" to some really cool photoshop images I made to tell some stories. I kinda just did a face palm as it was a form of art and it wasn't something very lazy. It was quicker than my preferred art style, but that didn't make it any less easy. I tried explaining this to him but he just kept being a hater about it. I eventually just had to block him so he'd stop harassing me about it. I've also had some criticisms on KZbin with people saying that my videos were boring or lame, even though I worked really hard on them and so many others loved them. One person kept saying a bunch of rude things to some of my most loved videos and I simply asked them outright if they were a hater because of the things they said. They've stopped commenting on my videos but I doubt that'll be the end. I do my best to handle haters and try to calmly settle things between us peacefully. If things get too intense, I simply report that person if they're language gets far too foul for my kid-friendly channel or they simply will not stop harassing me even when I politely ask them to stop. I know the hate may never stop, but I can still try to ease things over without a fuss. I just wish I could handle myself in real life like I can on the internet. Unfortunately, I still have some terrible social skills and am not as confident in person as I am on the internet.

Things have. I don't get bullied anymore now that I'm out of school (unless you count my sis who absolutely loves to tease me) and I'm very determined to make my dreams come true no matter whatever whoever says. When my dad found out I wanted to try to be a KZbinr, he wasn't exactly supportive and wouldn't listen to me when I tried to explain things. He's a pretty stubborn guy (a family trait) and is very set in his ways, making it near impossible to talk any sense into him. My mom was worried that he might have crushed my dreams but his words actually encouraged me to try harder and prove him wrong. The arguments he made are true of any job, not just KZbin. There were many times in my life when people didn't think I was capable of doing the things I wanted to do. Too many times I believed them and simply gave up before even trying. However, things changed for the better when I was in middle school. I didn't do too well in elementary school outside of art class as I have stated earlier, but I that was only because I wasn't getting the help I needed. I'm autistic so my brain doesn't exactly function the same as everyone else's and none of my teachers knew how to properly teach me. They taught me the same as they would anyone else and so I was lacking a proper education. One of my teachers even told my parents that I'd never do better than a C, and I was sitting right there with them! Luckily, my family moved to the other side of town right before I started middle school and so I entered a new school system. Incredibly, I finally had teachers who were willing to help me learn and give me the education I needed. I even ended up becoming really good friends with one of my teachers who has helped me throughout all of middle school. My family simply adores her. We even invited her to my high school graduation! Thanks to her and all my other wonderful teachers, I never got a grade below B and even got straight A's from time to time. I even made the honor roll and student of the month! Before, I would have never imagined myself capable of being able to do such things and thought I was doomed to be a failure. However, because of that, I am now able to challenge expectations and prove others wrong when they say I can't do something. So long as there's just one person who supports me, I know I can do whatever I set my mind to and show everyone what I'm really capable of!

I once dealt with negative criticism for voicing my opinion that I didn't like Incineroar's design(I had been hoping the rumor of a quadruped final evo was true). It didn't really give me anything to improve upon, so I ignored it. Other than that, though, I don't really think I'm a popular enough presence online to garner any sort of criticism. Most of the people that see and say anything about my stuff are friends and family, and even then, hardly anything is said(though I do have a friend that will link me to references when I appear to be having trouble with art stuffs).

+Tyandaga "Have you ever had negative criticism?" People criticised the first few versions of my OC because he had bad colouring. They didn't use the word 'bad,' but rather a reference to excrements, let's say. I changed the colours, learned about colour theory in general, moved on. Some of the more popular stuff I've written came under fire a few times, but with a few of them I could talk it out. One of the stories involved bullying and had a scene where the bully was bullied, essentially, and some people took exception to that. But one of them in particular, after she calmed down, explained that this was a reaction because her younger brother used to get bullied and the story struck a nerve. That was worked out amicably, no problem. And then you have jerks, as in all walks of life. For that, there is a brand new innovation, cutting edge technology for those people who make everything personal. It's a wonderful new thing, it's called the block button. In all seriousness, part of the solution is knowing your audience. If you get a piece of bad criticism from someone who should be liking it, start to wonder. If you get the idea that nothing you do will suffice, ignore it and move on. You'll never please everyone, and the people you want to please and can please should take precedence over those you'll never be good enough for.

I got attacked for an oc just because they had differently colored eyes, and they were called a Mary-Sue. At the time I was 12 and I didn't understand what that meant. It hurt so terribly that everyone was hating on me for something I didn't know was 'wrong' But taking it to heart really helped me fix her and tone down her colors, and even though she still has one yellow and one green eye, it's not as harsh and Mary-Sue like as before. I feel like we all learn over time :) I used to throw every random color on the oc I was making at the beginning, bright yellow and bright green? No problem! Full rainbow? Done! But I learned to match colors and tone down the number of colors I am adding over the years, you learn as you go along ^^ But I still make colorful characters, but only when I feel like it fits like when I was doing rainbow pride wolf pack when I drew a wolf with colors from each pride flag and pan came out really colorful and so did rainbow one, and autism awareness one was the same :)

Heterochromia isn't necessarily a trait of a bad design! I like having odd eyes on plain OCs (like a white animal with one blue & one yellow eye is my absolute weakness haha). There definitely is such thing as too much, and I get that with MLP the line is a loooot thinner than with other fandoms (the canon characters are multicoloured anyway in MLP) but finding that balance, whilst not all-important, is nice. If you're happy with your 'bad' OC then that's fantastic!

Mary Sue is often used in the wrong way. A Mary Sue is used to describe a way a character's personality, but people think that it's also based on colors and looks. If a character has bright colors and different colored eyes that does not make it a Mary Sue. A Mary Sue is a character that's pretty much perfect

I often create OC’s that change the course of the story completely, and a lot of people say that that’s not what you should do. I think that might be because I always start writing my OC’s as myself, and then change it as much as I think fit, but the way of acting of the character is still what I would do if put in that scenario. And I’ve tried to keep my OC’s as close to a background charachter as I can, but that’s not really what I’m used to and it’s hard, so I never post my OC’s online because I know people will still say that it’s way to much and it interferes with the canon and so sharing it feels like sharing a Mary Sue, because it’s too close to the main characters and takes too much importance, no matter how many flaws it has

Neat! It's also interesting to know you value criticism, because I've been thinking about saying something about your character's animation for quite a while… To be blunt, I think it would be good if you had some subtler poses for your OC; like: instead of only having one for tilting the ears back all the way, you could have more for the intermediate stages. The main reason I think it would be good, is that it would let you express feelings, make gestures, or use body language, that requires a smaller change in posture. So instead of signaling that your alarmed, you could signal that your a little surprised, or that you're simply alert and paying attention. And I'm not just referring to ears; that was just an example. I mean to include other limbs, too. (I could see that re-drawing the head for each intermediate angle would be probably the most labor intensive part, because the face is on the head.) If you do, do this: plan it out first. If you draw a bunch of new angles for the head, you might have to make up an entire subset of poses for all the animated features located on the head, to account for the change in angle. I suppose it wouldn't be too bad if you don't make new poses for the head, or you only make one, maybe two. Anyway… Hope this helps.

I think it's super important to be open to bettering yourself. Hopefully the criticism you receive is nice and clear cut to help you better yourself, but there will be times you need to listen to those negative comments as well. There was a fic I was reading that I just couldn't stand, and I tried to make it clear to the author what they might want to change and tried to do it in the nicest way possible, and they flat out ignored me and threw my criticism away. That is not a good mindset to have, it's good to take constructive criticism into account! A lot of people need to learn this!

Okay, 2 things to say: 1) It has been so long since I watched ur videos, and DANG! Ur oc has upgraded so much. 2) I never dealt with criticism on my ocs which is confusing since my main one was a alicorn, but her talent was drawing (she's based on me~). The only person that seemed to criticize it, was me. No one complained that it was a alicorn for no reason, but I felt wrong that it was. So I changed her into a unicorn however many people that made art of her changed her eye color to purple (her eye color was dark blue, but people mistook it for purple).

This not only has to do with criticism in a KZbin setting; Tyandaga's message about dealing with negative criticism can be applied to any aspect of life. I am a person who tends to take criticism from others and use it to fuel my own criticisms for myself. It isn't healthy, and only adds to the negative load I'm carrying. But, because I'm trying out for a big leadership position at school pretty soon, I come to videos like these to remind me to use negative criticism as a positive fuel source towards bettering myself. And I do think I'm getting better at it :) Thank you for uploading, Tyandaga!

Will carry little bit away.. I think your speed of talking is fine :D English isn't my main language, I am learning it only at school and can perfectly understand you in every of your videos :D And OC criticism.. Is totally fine :D I got much experience with my oc.. Many people like her, but also many people hate her because they think she's a perfect example of a cringe :0 (If is someone interested how does she look like, you can find her here ^^: Neolumini.deviantart.com, her name is Plasma ^^) I am using her as my main oc actually more than one year and.. Had many problems because of her design ^^' But it has little bit deeper sence ^^ Her image is kinda complicated and dark, like my mind irl :D And her inner character is simple.. Like my look irl ^^ (I really hope it's understandable XD) I tried to get rid of criticism by explaining why does she look like that way she looks like and many people got it and stopped hating me :D And others.. Well.. I just ignored them :D (I guess it isn't the best way how to get rid of criticism, but it's their turn to understand me ^^ I totally got them, now they should get me :D) That's my opinion ^^ Btw: Really love your videos, I am always happy when someone likes explaining and talking about pony stuff publicaly :D there are many bronies and speedpainters and stuff, but you are really unique ^^

I've been making pony content for literally YEARS on my DeviantArt. From doll makers to base edits (which I still do for fun, it's so relaxing) to eventually having my own style. I've also gone from design hoarding to actually using my OCs for stories via Next Gen! I've received a lot of praise over the years, but also a lot of criticism. "Those colors don't look right together, the saturation's off, their special talent is too niche, their cutie mark is too complex" ect ect. Not all of those critiques were so nice but it really did help me as a designer and an artist not only in the pony community but in overall art in general! Something else about criticism that is super important to remember is to listen to repeats. If every time you post your OC and you keep getting the same similar critiques, like stated, something may actually be wrong and you should work to fix that. It's never fun to hear someone doesn't like what you've made but it's not always to be a bully. (PS your sona is super cute)

I’m honestly glad for some of the negative criticism I’ve received, because if it wasn’t for that, my main OC wouldn’t be as she is today. She used to be so cringe and OP, but because of the criticism, I’ve pretty much changed here entire story and created something that I like, and everyone else does too. Without that criticism, I wouldn’t have started a whole fanfic for my main OC.

But There Are Other Channels And Videos That Are Better Than This If You Are Disgusted For What I Do” 2: “Why Do You Draw On Paper? Honestly, I’ve had a lot of criticism with my own art, and I’m really happy for it. In fact, one of the things we do in my art class despite many not liking to is to have art critiques at the end of projects in order for us to understand that in order to improve, others looks on a piece will point out areas that need work. The last 3 years for me I’ve improved drastically from listening to my classmates, and to those online. Not only has my artwork overall improved, but my character designs, and being able to handle when others take the criticism too far, or use it to be destructive. I know many may not like to hear it, and sometimes I don’t either but I also take it as a challenge of sorts to continue improving, and so I know how to maybe someday give the same advice to other artists in a way that they’d benefit, and maybe not have to get past the crude way the tips are given.

I think it's also important to know the line between criticism and being an ass to someone. Some people take actual criticism as being rude or hurting the artists feelings but if you get hurt by criticism you'll never improve. It's always good to tell a creator what you think (keeping in mind that the criticism is constructive not just saying something is bad and not giving an actual reason to WHY it's bad.)

I've seen a few youtube videos on hate for alicorns, and since my first oc was an alicorn, I would always pretend she was just a pegasus whenever I talked about her to other people.... (I can't help that I feel like all three fit me so perfectly!! D:) Finally, I just decided that she had enough backstory to counter the alicorn super powers and fame. ^-^ Yes she's an alicorn and grew up in Canterlot with the royal sisters as her guardians, but she went through traumatic experiences in losing her parents and tried to give up the royal image. She refuses to wear her crown and shies away from guards saluting her. To me, that felt like justification for adding an alicorn oc to the fandom.

A very interesting take on an episode. I really like the little "animations" on you character throughout the video. Yes criticism will follow you through your life. Even though I should know better I take some critics personally, mostly when I know I am right or someone is arguing with me about the fastest or easiest way to get things done, if I am doing it like this for years. A great Example is my "bad" handwriting, even though in the end everyone can read it. When I was young I tried to improve it, but to no avail for a month. Talking about OCs, since sadly only 1 of my friends knows about MLP I dont have people to talk about my OC, not mentioning improving it in the aspects of backstory etc.

Honestly negative critism for me has really been helpful, I was given great advice on how to make some of my poses look better, make the body types look less awkward, or how to make my OC look just a bit more original to keep her colors blending well. Though....once I did meet a person who was extreme about getting critism on their characters. They used very hurtful to the eye colors, and if we so much as suggested that they maybe should turn down the neon on their next OC they'd start to threaten to hurt themselves or say that everyone hated them. Even though we hadn't insulted them. That way of handing critism is wrong, but not because they choose to ignore it, because they choose to villianize it and make a huge deal out of something very small and politely pointed out.

In my very first KZbin videos, I got a criticism that I had, and I quote, "an ugly face". That hurt. A LOT. But, while I do acknowledge that all have a natural beauty (including myself), I did find out that my hair color and makeup were doing no favors for me on camera. I can laugh about it now that I've learned how to fix that issue. Thank you for your words of wisdom on this subject. It's so very true that even the worst comments can hold advice when it comes to bettering yourself. As long as you don't take it personally and with a grain of salt.

I'm very new to your channel but you've spoken everything I always keep in mind. I even had the same kind of conversation earlier this morning! its always good to have an outside eye, be it negative or positive, to see what you don't see so you can fix it. Sure it hurts, but our emotions and bodies tend to become immune to these things day by day just like everything else in our daily lives. its just a part of life. it sucks, and sometimes we don't deserve it but there's always something to learn from it, because we change all the time.

Dear Tyganda, thank you for uploading this. I am somewhat new here on KZbin, so I occasionally face negative critisism. I face memers calling me a normie, being told that I ruin everything by shipping certain characters or being told to put ten bullets in my head. Yes, these were REAL hate comments I received. But after hearing some advice from my mom and from this video, it has helped me A LOT! I really appreciate this advice and also all the support I have gotten from everyone. So, again, thank you so much for posting this and thanks for making me feel better about my OC's and fursonas, as well as my other content (Drawings and videos). Keep up the good work.
