Hi Davie, thank you very much for showing that pattern. For me the Black Pennell has been and still is one of the most versatile, universal and successful flies of all times. It gave me all three species of salmonides in great numbers. Brown and sea trout as well as salmon really like it. I only could recommend that fly to any flyfisher man/woman. Best regards from Germany

Never leave the house without having a selection of black pennall's in different sizes, simple but deadly here in the Scottish Highlands, Thanks Davie 💯

Wonderful fly, Davie. It appears that in your latest videos, you are focusing even more on teaching people the art of Fly Tying. I feel that I can speak for most of your viewers when I say you are a wonderful teacher. Thank you so much for that, keep up the good work....ATB Jesse

Thank you Davie! A beautiful implementation of a simple fly! I appreciate your detailed explainations of the subtleties of the art. Find that it's the little things that when added up make the difference between an OK rendition and a well crafted fly. Cheers! Hank

Davie, I have been tying for only 3 months, and want to thank you for these videos, which I have found massively helpful in getting to grips with the various different aspects. I don't think i would be anywhere near to where i now am without this help. I am just at the point of trying to start attempt some Traditional wets in readiness for a trip home to my routes in Shetland in May, and this is one of my favorite flies to tie on the middle position, so excellent timing! I wanted you just to be aware there are doubtless many people like me who really do appreciate the free sharing of your talent and the clarity with which you explain everything. Best wishes, and I look forward to the next instalment!

Davie, since Pearsall's is no longer in business, can you recommend another brand for floss? I love this fly. It is the first wet fly I caught a trout on, an 18 inch brown trout hiding behind a few rocks in a small run.
@DavieMcPhail4 жыл бұрын
Hi Terryll Monroe, I use uni-floss and a rayon floss from Veniards instead of the pearsalls now, the black pennell is a great pattern and can be fished in many sizes throughout the fishing season with great success both on rivers and lochs..I laugh at my wife as she can't use the crochet hook but I think she means to do this so that she doesn't have to do the knots for me... All the very best Davie..

Hi Davie, Great tutorials. I really appreciate your tying videos. So after many, many years of fishing, and several failed attempts at tying, I"m back at it. I have a lot of trouble breaking the tying thread. I get sometimes almost ready to tie in the hackle and I break the thread. It seems to me that I don't have too much pressure on it but it breaks and then I have to unravel the whole darn mess and start anew. Any tips on how to keep the thread tight and not break it accidentally? Experience, I guess is what is needed to get the feel for it. I use UNI 6/0.
@DavieMcPhail7 жыл бұрын
Hi philip0148, If I had 6/0 breaking on me then I would be more likely to blame the bobbin holder as it's a strong thread. I use a ceramic bobbin holder from Tiemco it's the heavy duty one and I have never had any issues with it... You must also adjust the bobbin holder by bending out the arms of the bobbin holder so that the spool of thread doesn't stick as this will also cause the thread to break..Waxing your thread will help strengthen the thread especially when tying in the hackle and the wing..I hope this is of some help to you.. All the very best Davie...

Hey Davie, Nice tie, the Double Grouse and claret is now perfected. I found a place that I could buy the smallest jungle cock feathers still on the neck really cheap. I love it because I can use them on Dawl Bach, and many small wet flies with them. It is a good selling point because the quality only makes flies better. All the best to you and yours. God bless. Sean
