Tying a Grouse & Yellow and a Grouse & Orange with Davie McPhail

Tying two wet/soft hackle flies using just the one Grouse feather..

Threads, Pearsall's Yellow Silk
Body, Pearsall's Yellow Silk
Hackle, Grouse Feather from the Wing
Grouse & Orange
Hooks Fulling Mill Barbless size 14
Thread, Pearsall's Orange Silk
Rib, Gold Tinsel
Body, Pearsall's Orange Silk

Could you tie more flies using ruffed grouse? I just started hunting them and I have a few pelts that I would love to use for flies but I am not creative enough to figure out how to use all the feathers.

Hi Alex, Partridge has many feathers like the Grouse which can be used in the same way, almost all birds have similar feathers so you can easily fill your box with the tying method....I'm glad you enjoyed the video... All the very best Davie..

I'm wondering a thing, Davie... Are the scissors you are using now different than the Pakistani scissors we talked about? Asking because, though the general construction looks the same, the tips don't look as fine as the Pakistani scissors I have. Mike

Hi Mike, I have sharpened these scissors two or three times now and because of this they have lost their lovely point so really I should have replaced them but they still have a nice and sharp edge..I do have a few pairs so I've no excuses.. All the very best Davie..

Beautiful Davie, you may not remember but I told you a few years ago how I caught by biggest stream Brown on a #12 Grouse & Orange. :o) It made three reel screaming runs before I got close enough to see it's size. You told me those are memories you'll never forget. Thanks, you just made me relive it!
