Another beautiful fly. Some points that even some experienced tiers miss. The importance of when using resin or varnish to protect the quill body of extending the varnish onto the hook to stop egress of water getting under the dressing leading to probable rust weakening the hook. The extra thin protective layer of varnish adds exponentially to the protection and durability of the body. The mix of lightbrite to the seals fur adds a lot to subtle effectiveness. As an alternative to the lightbrite. I often make use of fibres from fritz. Both the few bits from when clearing the flue before tying and the waste scraps short ends. Not being tight just careful lol.

Hi Davie, great fly as always! I notice you use CDC and Deer/Elk hair together in wings quite often. Do you find this helps float the fly vs using CDC or Deer hair on its own? Cheers 🙏🏼
@DavieMcPhail2 жыл бұрын
Hi Southside Fly-Fishing, It makes it float a bit longer adding the deer hair to the fly, this fly I originally tyed for a friend that fishes competitions so the longer he could keep catching before replacing the fly the better...I'm glad you liked the fly.. All the very best Davie..

Really good looking pattern and looks easy to tie . What fish are you using it for and what insect does it represent ?
@DavieMcPhail2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, It's a very good pattern for adult and emerger midge but it can also represent small heather and black gnat flies so it's a good all-round fly..I'm glad you liked it.. All the very best Davie..

Can I ask you a question please David. Who inspired you to become 1 of the best fly tying instructors. I do try and copy Oliver Edwards and some of Frank Sawyer's flies just a question that I thought I would ask
@DavieMcPhail2 жыл бұрын
Hi Stewart, I am glad you feel that I do a good job at teaching fly tying which I really try to do every time I film a fly..The biggest inspiration since I started has been my jobs when I was a ghillie and a fishery manger where I learned a lot about fly life as well as working every day on the waters and using my fly tying to help make the flies to help me and the guest that came to fish...Filming the flies I tye made me look even closer at the methods I used as it's something you don't notice as much until you see them so with the questions I got asked fine tuned me to do this even more here on KZbin. Also with all the questions and flies I get asked to tye inspires me a lot so I would have to give a lot of credit to the youtubers that ask as well as other platforms that I use..I hope this answers your question and thank you for asking.. All the very best Davie..

Hi Davie could you let me know why you need to coat in varnish after applying the resin please?
@DavieMcPhail2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nick, The main reason for doing this is to help keep the resin clear as like all resins and even the old epoxy resins we use to use left a slight tackiness after curing so I would aways seal it with a normal clear varnish...It also helps to stop water soaking under the resins as the water can get under it.. All the very best Davie..

"Quilled Body Bibio Half-Hog" Great looking fly pattern but please do something about the name. It takes almost as long to say it as to tie the thing.
