Tying Carl's Cicada with Martyn White (dry fly)

Step by step instructions for Carl's cicada. This highly effective terrestrial dry fly is quick and easy to tie, high floating and fairly durable. It's well worth having a few in your box for annual or periodic cicada hatches.

Hook: TMC 760SP size 6
Thread: Danville's Flat waxed nylon
Body: Plastazote foam
Underwing: Crystal flash
Wing: calf tail
Legs: medium round rubber or sili legs

Another fine pattern Martyn. Like to plop that under a tree along the bank and watch the fireworks. Nice job! Much easier to tie than I imagined.

Hey Martyn, I am curouus, are there cicada's that come off in Japan, and like here every 17 years (in the U.S.?0 I live in Maine and have never seen them here. I believe they are indigenous to the southern U.S. I'm sure this fly would look like something to eat to a fish. even if cicada's didn't hatch in an area. All the best and thanks for sharing. Sean

Hi Sean, Yes we actually have a few species of cicada here in japan. To be honest I think if you are fishing any water with bigger terrestrials, these flies will catch fish. a lot of the hopper and ant patterns are just big foam and rubber things that just look like something alive for the fish to eat really. Don't think so, the pattern I have for Card's cicada is quite a bit different from this. I found this pattern on a website (can't remember which one) ages ago among a list of cicada patterns which also included Charlie Card's
