I've been making flies for best part of 50 years. One thing strikes me occasionally is the combination of wax and varnish (nowadays quite often, some sort of glue). Generally, if you're varnishing or gluing something, the LAST thing you would want near it is wax. How come it sort of works when you make a fly? Mind you, on occasion when I've had to unwind, I've found that superglued thread seems to unwind quite readily. I've put that down to me using cheap glue, but I don't know.

not sure Callum perhaps its just historical practice on our part i actually made a shellac varnish for my classic flies by dissolving natural shellac perhaps old recipes shared common solvents?
