Hi Davie, Two great Emerger patterns with slight variations, both look highly effective. It just goes to show a little bit of creativity to fully use up some of your “cut-off” materials. Regards, Wayne 😀👍

I tie a very similar fly except I've never quite mastered knotting the ph tail legs. Your tip on using the stiffer CDC as the underwing is great. I have been throwing it away. Thanks and great video

This fly fooled some fantastic rainbows and browns on the Rio Costilla in New Mexico last weekend. There was a mixed hatch of caddis, mayflies and stones coming off. Between this and your hog hopper in hare's ear with a gold rib I hardly needed to change flies. Great channel, thanks.

Hi Callum, I'm glad you had a go at tying these flies and that they have worked really well for you as it's aways great to hear how they are working in other countries..I do get asked a lot if these flies would work in other countries so this is great info for many... All the very best Davie

Hi Davie, Great fly, I have been playing around with CDC lately. Took me awhile to get used to handling the fibres but I have it now. I have learned so much from you and your videos. Thanks for sharing your expertise. All the best to you, Sean

thank you for your experience at the vice! very crestive. I have had good success using biots on my emergers. I use super glue under the windings .seems to make the biots somewhat more durable

Hi Davie I was about to buy the Kamasan B160 in 14 to tie this for rivers, I see the hook is heavy wire recommended for buzzer, spider and nymph, is this suitable for the river or is there a better newer alternative?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan, the river and as well as The B160 is a great hook and one that I have used on many dry and wet fly patterns both for the river and lochs so I would certainly recommend it...I am also a fan of the TMC 2487BL which I use down to 24s, it is describe by Tiemco as a floating, nymph, shrimp, caddis pupa, wide D/E 2X short fine wire hook so as you can see it's a very useful hook for many patterns..I hope this is of some help to you... All the very best Davie..

First, I love watching you tie and trying to tie similar flies. I am new at the game, but am learning. Typically, your flies use Bug-bond or varnish to coat the fly. But this time, the quill body uses both. Why?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 11 жыл бұрын
Hi Gary Shellhammer, I used to use two to three coats of varnish to do this fly but by using a uv resin you can speed up this process. I like to finish off with a coat of varnish which will seal it as the resin can be a bit tacky which you don't want.. I'm glad you enjoy the videos.. All the very best Davie

Davy a really lovely pattern. Where do get your well marked peacock eyes from and how do you use the bleach to remove the fluff.
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 10 жыл бұрын
HiFytyer50, The Peacock Eye's that I use come from a company called Veniards, I get the shop to order 100 then I'll sort through them to pick the best quills and out a 100 I'll get about 40% to 60% good enough and the rest I'll give away to friends...I've attached a good video showing how to remove the herl from the eyes.. Im not shure what i do wrong but when u strip my quills iam not getting color variations like yours with the cream and brown, the brown colour is sooo small you cant even see it. Am i doing something wrong or what? Your quills have very distinct colors. Great videos by the way i enjoy them they are alot of help!!!
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Jerrod Hipkin, You're not doing anything wrong, just try and find the biggest peacock eye feathers you can as most times these will have the best colour and also make sure you use the quills on the eye part of the feathers as this is the quills you want...If you can look through the feathers and look at the back of the eye, you'll see the lighter quills...I'm glad you enjoy the videos.. All the very best Davie

+Davie McPhail you can also pay a visit to a zoo, in the summer, where they have peacocks walking free. loads of fine feathers laying around in the grass, just grab them and take it home with ya ;) it will cover your entrence fee 10 times :) if you have to do some hygenic stuff with them before tying i dunno. maybe dip them in some proper fluid?

Hi Davie, great fly. Am back to fly fishing and tying after many years and have learned a huge amount from your videos. Was wondering if there is a lighter kamasan hook than the b170s for no hackle and cdc dries. Have found the b400s a bit long. Any suggestions greatfully received. Please keep up the good work. Karl
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 11 жыл бұрын
Hi Karl, I'm not a great fan on the B400 myself, I like the Partridge SLD and the SUD dry fly hooks as I've found them to be not bad just the odd one slightly soft in the wire but mostly very good..I'm always looking for that perfect hook myself... All the very best Davie

Hello Davie after bleaching the peacock eye to get rid of the fibres, i have found they snap very easily. Would you tell me if i am leaving the eyes to long in the bleach & which supplier do you get your eyes from.
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 11 жыл бұрын
Hi Donald Donaldson, There's very little you can do but the least you have them in the bleach the better, also try and soak them in a hair conditioner for a wee while which will help a bit too..I was using some today and they were a bit brittle so I soaked them in warm water before i used them as this helps as well... All the very best Davie

Hi Jeremy, It's up to yourself whether you feel the fly would fish better with legs or without. I've found this pattern works just as good without but in the bigger sizes the legs do make a better impression and more likely to make a difference.. All the very best Davie
