The daddy in its juvenile form is the bane of gardeners. The dreaded leather jacket. It fills your root crops with holes destroys roots. Back in the day while fishing from a grassy bank on a north east lake. I saw them hatch out from the grass. Tied on a copy and had great sport. I noticed that an old Scottish gentleman seemed to be catching and releasing at least five times more fish than I was. The cunning devil had laid out a wide loop of ten mill rope around and behind him. Slowly pulling some of the loop through the grass. Flushing out the hatching daddies. They are not the best fliers and as some launched before their wings had fully deployed they landed short in front of him. After about ten separate pulls of the rope he would reset the loop and repeat the process. After that lesson my spare bass bag always contained one hundred and fifty yards of rope. One end tied to short boat fender. So it doubled up just in case someone fell into the water. As one of my friends did at Langley Dam. On a wet and windy day. That dam wall was slippery. That line saved him as he was caught in the undertow. That and him wearing thigh waders made for an interesting addition in the lodge catch return book. The manager joked that Martin should have been logged as an invasive species. His wife called him a lot worse than that when i took him home later. When she said drowned rat she added and emphasised “P” with rat.

Fantastic buggy looking hopper. I do love it when a fly comes together and looks so good. It is impossible to do this one wrong unless you leave the fibers twisted, or poor quality CDC. I have tied this one immediately and I am sure it will be a hit with my friends. All the best to you and God bless you and yours. Sean

Hi Sean, It does help when you have good CDC but you can still get a good fly as it's meant to be rough anyway...I'm glad you like it and let me know what your friends think of the ones you tye... All the very best Davie....

Saw a bunch of these coming off in the late season in SW Ontario. Great imitation; easy to see when fished as a dry, lots of movement when fished as a wet. I really like the segmentation you get when you twist the chenille, as opposed to using the foam.

Hi Keith, It's great to hear that my videos have been helping you but remember I may be able to show you but it's yourself that has to sit down and practice which by the sounds of it you have been doing really well...It's a great hobby to get into and even after the 35 years I've been tying I still enjoy it as much as I did when I first started and I'm sure you will will as well... All the very best Davie...

Davie. Have you considered dunking the whole fly into Fabsil, then blowing dry, or leaving overnight? I haven't made this pattern yet, but it looks optimal.

Hi Duofold, I have done this with other floatants and one that I have used after I have dyed the CDC is Nikwax which makes the CDC water repellent for a long time..I have attached a link to a video I made about dyeing CDC and then using the Nikwax on it..kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3qxhK2PmNxqhKc All the very best Davie

I am going to tie this nice fly, but I wondered: Why are you using a wet fly hook? Yours Jan Hansen
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jan, The B160 is a medium weighted wire hook ideal for both wet and dry flies, a very popular with many due to this though using a dry fly hook would certainly help float the fly a little longer..I'm glad you liked the fly and I hope they fish well for you... All the very best Davie..

@@DavieMcPhail Thanks for your answer. I live in the southern part of Norway, and this summer I used your Allrounder Emerger a lot. It fished very well, both in the mountains and in the lowlands. Where I am fishing Daddy Longleg is a very good pattern too, both in summer and autumn. I therefore look forward to try your Daddy Longleg in the season 2020. Yours Jan Hansen

I almost got a blank today, but saved by your Bibio pattern. There were plenty of Daddy long legs on the water, but I had no matching color or size. So, I looked up your ties. Thanks for the video, David! I will be tying some of these. What was the thing you were saying to leave it in the day before fishing? Around 5:57 in the video?

Hi Andras Nemeth, I use mucilin floatant on my flies but I also treat my feathers with a Nikwax which I have used after dyeing some CDC feathers in the link I have attached..You can also do this with the flies you have tyed though you can allow them to dry naturally instead of using the hair drier..I hope this is of some help to you...
