We've done well at Rutland with olive wing Suspender Minkies very similar to this pattern but having a dark glister body. The problem we've had is the eyes coming off after a fish has taken it. Superb pattern Davie and thank you for demonstrating how best to secure the eyes. Top man!

It's simple enough to tie, but will be unbeatable for big perch and medium pike. I will try it this spring and summer. Thank you very much, Davie, for such pattern!

This pattern could probably work quite well as a searcher fly for sea trout, striped on the surface. Great craftsmanship as always. Thanks!

Nice tie Davie, I will have to try these! I have been using "surface-streamers" with extremely good results for decades. I fish them to imitate a minnow that is surface feeding. Preoccupied with food the minnows forget their caution and are an easy mark for a predators attacking from below. My first experience with this fishing was with a poorly made muddler with an over-large deer hair head. The success I had with this fly prompted me to tie some 3 inch "surface-muddlers" (with big buoyant heads) on 3x and 4x long hooks that I have bent so that the hook floats/fishes point up (to make then semi-weedless). Different color patterns to imitate the local forage species evolved and I have a box dedicated to these 3 to 6 inch long flies. About 5 years ago I started tying the surface-streamers with large boobie eyes and synthetic materials with good results. The boobie eyes float well and give the streamer a side to side swimming motion when stripped gently. Strikes are often spectacular with the fish clearing the surface completely on the take. I find it is best to wait until you feel the weight of the fish before executing a "strip strike" to avoid reacting too quickly and pulling the fly away from the fish. I fish surface-streamers in the early morning or evening quiet water times over weed beds or wherever I see schools of minnows feeding. Hope this is of interest. ATB. Hank

This is very interesting to me. I think this kind of fishing would be very exciting! Thanks for details on how it is fished. As a relatively new fly fisher of 4 years, I love trying different methods of catching fish. :)

We'll I've seen it all. I wouldn't know weather to cast it or suck on it like a gobstopper ha ha. I'd say it would be deadly late in the evening as its getting dark. Must make a few. Thanks for the great video as all your videos are great. You are the MASTER.

Davie, again great stuff. What are your thoughts on this same fly but with a cone head or weight eyes instead of foam and fish for silver salmon? Always great to learn from you.

I was watching an older post of a salmon fly you tired on a plastic tube, not a hook. Was that for demo or do you take it off and put it on a hook?
@DavieMcPhail

Hi Carl, I keep all my tubes in my box without hooks on them and only thread the nylon through and attach the hook when I'm ready to fish it.. All the very best Davie..

Very nice as usual Davie, I have been waiting a long while now for one of the resin companies to make the kit for converting the UV torch to the mains for American electricity. Most of the tiers I watch in the UK have them. I cannot find a kit for it here. Do you think one of the companies might consider it? Filling mill sells in America maybe they might? I know the guys here would buy them. I use up many batteries. All the best, and thanks for sharing your talent. Sean

Hi Sean, Unfortunately my adaptor broke and I need to order another as it's far better than using batteries as you said...I could ask if they do have one for the US market for you or even if the one they have can be adapted in some way..I'm glad you are still enjoying the videos and thanks again for the kind words.. www.veniard.com/product4268/section188/ All the very best Davie..

Hi Stryker 2, If there's small fish in the lock then it would certainly be worth using..I'm glad you like it as Bob's fly is still a good fish catcher.. All the very best Davie..

Hi Cheri Doyle, I'm sorry I don't have a video on fishing this fly, I did a search on youtube for you but I couldn't find one..It's normally fished in areas where you are seeing fish hitting fry as most fish will try and stun the fry in the hope when they turn back will find either an injured or stunned fish, having a fly like this will suspended just below the surface and can work really well..I would twitch it back as well as fish it static hoping the fish would want to take it..I hope this is of some help to you.. All the very best Davie..

Davie, i' see you a thousand times using uni 8, and it's never been cut off....what's the secret??
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 6 жыл бұрын
Hi birrapampa, I make sure that the thread runs smoothly from the bobbin holder by bending the arms to suit the bobbins so they don't stick as this is the main reason for the thread to break...The other thing is that I wax it from time to time which does help a lot and I have just got so used to using it..I did say that you could use a heavier thread when tying this fly and the 6/0 would also be worth using...I'm glad you enjoyed the video.. All the very best Davie..
