I'm not sure if this is a hot take or not, but we should stop going to Japan. I feel like since GBB23 the crowd has been less understanding of beatboxing or technicallity, but in GBB21 the crowd was amazing. Just an opinion, but yeah.

Thanks for the video! You're one of those creators who consistently produce high-quality content but don’t always get the visibility you deserve. I really appreciate how you dive deep into beatbox culture in a way that's both insightful and accessible. That said, I do feel like reaction content has taken up too much space lately. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad it’s contributing to beatbox visibility, but I wish the community focused more on sharing original content and supporting those who truly help the scene grow. Unfortunately, I’ve noticed some people in the community who seem to take more than they give-being reluctant to include others or share without personal gain. Thankfully, this is just a small minority. I’m really grateful for the silent majority of viewers and the dedicated fans who make this space so positive. It’s also heartwarming to see how easygoing and welcoming parts of the community can be. To back this up, I want to highlight events like Growl Up, which are shifting the focus of beatbox towards music rather than just battles. While I think the concept of blending beatbox with instruments still has room to grow, it’s a promising direction. I’d love to see this event get more recognition and support-it has so much potential. I also totally agree with your point about unnecessary comparisons and gatekeeping in the scene. The famous "Stitch sounds like River" doesn't make sense to me and just fuel egos rather than pushing beatbox forward as an art form. Overall, thanks for sharing your perspective. I really appreciate your efforts to grow the community and make it safer for everyone (and yes, let’s stop sharing mics!). Keep up the amazing work!

I def agree with the judging one. It's normal to disagree with the judges but nowadays, any form of disagreement is mostly a hate towards judges/competitors cause people just can't take them for some reason. It's sad to see Julard being accused of French bias since his win against Marvelous and also in GBB24 in general. I swear some people are not gonna stop whining unless it's a result that satisfy them

I might be an outlier on this, but I am not a particular fan of the ways counters are done in beatboxing currently. Most counters boil down to doing a simplified version of the same beat, but louder. Den had shared a similar opinion about this when talking about GBB24. To be fair, I really appreciate beatboxers like Alexinho and Julard that can craft entire rounds out of a counter and freestyle, but I also think freestyling is a specialized skill that takes on more risk in a battle than a prepared round, like structure and cleanliness of the performance. I think the best way to shoot the gap on a lot of these issues is to have more beatboxing "music videos" and events like Kickback, BBU, Beatland, Show Your Masterpiece, etc. These allow beatboxers to prepare specific tracks, but cater them to their opponent in a much more specific way than "same beat but louder". I pretty much agree with every other point stated in the video. Wish you well, Tyla!
@TylaDubya24 күн бұрын
Freestyling is definitely a specified skill and when a beatboxer can pull off a battle by just doing it, WILD! I enjoy watching events where beatboxers can create videos and compete! They are fun, but also have their own difficulties and costs in producing such high quality content. Wish you well too!

If only there was a competitive nature about the quality of content you make. A way to encourage people to make entertaining videos. I think the scene is stuck because nobody wants to make an effort, could be because people in the community don't have the skills or creativity to make something different (me included) or because the payoff for good videos just doesn't exist (which I think is true but it still sucks). Good video as always, love every point you made in the video. I'd also mention the infamous trend of giving every beatboxer the same sound system to work with. If at a music event, a musician needs to sound check for hours before a show, then why not for beatboxing? I get that being proficient on a mic is a category to judge as well but it makes people abandon the reason that their art is loved in exchange for better volume on stage.
@TylaDubya25 күн бұрын
I can attest to the good videos and payoff bit lol I have sometimes spent months making a video for it just to flop 😭 Right now reactions have the payoff because the originals are performing well (GBB), they just unfortunately aren't very creative and if done poorly, can harm the original creator. I see what you are saying about different sound per beatboxer and totally agree with that, for showcases. For battles it provides and equal playing field (in theory). Though, that depends who they used to eq it, was it someone bass heavy? If so, good luck to people who don't use bass. I have been to events before where sounds that would be completely fine (inward tooth whistle) on some sounds systems, sounded so ear piercing to the point where it easily lost me the match. Also, to your point on my previous post, I agree, we should stop separating into "schools". There will always be a "new" school, eventually they will be call the "new new new new new new" school. The concept of schools also imply beatboxers can't improve, learn new sounds, and keep up with the "new" school.

I personally think since the Swiss beatbox/tomzacre scandal, The beatbox scene got divided heavily, the truly toxic people of the community came out of the shadows and seems like everyone is okay with it, No matter what if the event is amazing there will always be comparisons, hatred just pure toxicity, it just feels every year it’s getting worse and the word “ beatbox community “ is so polluted now, the one thing I realized about beatboxers is they’re never thankful or appreciative of their own art they just want more and more and it’s getting to the point where they don’t know what they want anymore, if the community goes in the direction it’s going I don’t think beatboxing will die but the fun of it is dying
@TylaDubya25 күн бұрын
The online side of beatboxing has always been a bit rough, and maybe it has gotten a bit rougher over the years due to its growth. That and people just being chronically online. The concept of individuals not being happy with anything isn't unique to the beatboxing community but rather, spans the internet as a whole. I can attest to the in person beatboxing community to being drastically different and much more supportive and nicer.

100% with the gatekeeping sounds, like I've talk to beatboxer who has to be given PERMISSION from another beatboxer to use/teach a certain sound, like wtf it's not about the sound it's about how you USE IT.

Great points and great content! Very important to discuss this matters 👏 The only thing I would mention about not sharing microphones is that there is always that problem of volume differences. This always leaves a doubt as to whether one of the beatboxers is less powerful or if it is the microphone. I don't know exactly why this happens, but if organizers could solve that, each person having their own microphone would be the ideal indeed!
@TylaDubya24 күн бұрын
Keep in mind, there are events that successfully run two mics for battles. Sure, there can be equipment issues, but mic differences most likely come down to an issue on the sound engineers side, which is avoidable.

I don’t think the reactions will stop soon, it’s a Worldwide trend for any type of content, they got out of control. The events which not involve battle will not make the same amount of money, the battles intrigue more people, and is not really a problem to compare something or somebody this exist everywhere, in sports, music, art, and is a very good method to observe differences which might help you to understand things that you can use for improving your own abilities, yeah every one should be respected for their stuff, but the people will never stop comparing, the people( most of them are kids which leave stupid and annoying comments) should try to be less toxic

Counting singing at all as musicality in a “Beatbox Battle” was killer for a lot people and definitely had more of a negative impact than anything at all. There’s been so many battles where the person who sung for half the battle won vs better beatboxer who actually did a full beatboxing routine and most of the people who spoke out against this 10 years ago were outcasted. Being able to successfully and smoothly introduce humming melodies and produce melodic sounds with your mouth is true beatbox musicality not the singing.
@TylaDubya25 күн бұрын
Like I said in the video, to me, singing definitely plays into musicality but isn't musicality itself. Singing can and has added a lot to beatboxing and I wish I could do it well myself. Overall I think beatboxers incorporating singing into their music has helped push beatboxing, not harm it.

Wow! Really love the video, and I agree with pretty much everything you said. ❤ The only thing I kinda disagree with (or should be explored deeper) is your point about the judging in high level beatbox battles like GBB… I think that the 5 judges have a responsibility for the integrity of the competition, in the way of having professional, meaningful and well-thought out opinions on the performances. Of course, this is kinda wishful thinking in a live battle format, since the judges decision comes immediately after the performance itself. HOWEVER, professional and experienced judges SHOULD be able to withstand that added pressure - otherwise, I don’t think they should have been judges for that competition in the first place. That’s why I think it’s sad that we (often) only get to see judge results, and not the ‘why’ element of the decision. This is why I love watching D-Low’s and Colaps’ judge analysis videos, since I can understand the judges thought process, even if I don’t agree with the result. TLDR: I just want judges in GBB and World Champs to be able to stand by their professional decision, knowing that they made their choice based upon several factors and criteria. 😅

im a little late here but i think we should leave behind the thought of complexity being better, like usually when someone does like really technical and weird stuff people think they’re better cause it sounds harder but why won’t people understand that what they understand of complexity is not all, it’s hard to create nice melodies, structured beats and things like that and i think people should understand that being minimalistic is not being basic, it’s just a way of creating music and it’s as complex as spamming sounds, they’re just 2 ways of expressing music.
@TylaDubya2 күн бұрын
While I agree that sometimes people can be "complex" to the point it is not understandable and that being able to be minimalistic is a skill all on its own. I'm not sure that I would agree that being minimalistic is equal to complexity, I think they are two different skills!
@DJCerealSauce645513 күн бұрын
The gatekeeping thing is crazy because like... did casual beatbox enjoyers forget that there's a lot of technical knowledge required to make these sounds happen? Did they forget that the content creators spent hours upon hours of their life learning Double Voice because it's hard as hell to do? "Oh no he spent days of his life learning an incredible technique, but Show-Go did it first so you're not allowed to do it" weirdos they are man

No hate at all, but them being easy kind of rings to my point. They are low effort because they use someone else content as the crutch. There are many factors that go into whether a shoutout is beneficial or not. My main point on exposure was that with short form content now, anything can go viral, so it could potentially benefit more to post to your own platform. Of course you CAN still gain exposure, but it can come at the sacrifice of some control over your music.

I like reaction videos. I only disagree with that point.

It's okay to like them, unfortunately, if they are made on the "worse" end of the spectrum, that doesn't negative the negative side effects.

Emoji beatbox presents beatbox as a joke and it's very popular for some reason and it doesn't do any justice for what beatbox really is about
@TylaDubya16 күн бұрын
Depends on the approach, I have seen a few that have shown a high level of beatboxing!

We should leave behind the saying "this beatboxer is better than this beatboxer etc etc" all beatboxers are unique. They are differnet but that doesnt mean they are better.

I agree! That's part of the battle focused culture i am referencing!

Am I in the minority to dislike the unnecessarily complex patterns that dont sound good? An example I can think of off the top of my head is the vocal runs in youthemi by colaps
@TylaDubya2 күн бұрын
Sometimes things get more complicated than they should! I see that a lot with newer beatboxers that try to put so many sick techniques into a single beat rather than letting them stand on their own! It happens!

Throwing salt on dlows reactions? Hilarious

DLow was actually one of my examples in my reaction video about "better" reactions. Though I was referencing when he included his judge pov,, not sure what his look like now.

Loose fake battling in 2025. Too much focus on dissing opponents has led to forced 'battle' moves that are cringy, overly negative, and its gone too far. Its holding beatboxing back from being more popular. Some are great at fun creative battling, which is great, but few have that skill.

I think "forced" battle moves are a result of inexperience battling. I have been there myself, wouldn't do any of them now myself, though!

In my opinion, reacting has become cringe since chezame and sxin split ways (i remember they told they're gonna stop doing it). Why split ways to do the same thing but alone? I think it implies income split problems or subscribers count, even any problem.
@TylaDubya24 күн бұрын
Their reason for splitting will probably never be known by the general community, though yes, we now get double of the same reactions.

I would like to see less whistling. Jesus christ, please. Yes. Its cool, and a neat trick. But please, they don't compare to basses or lip rolls or odbass or clops or dry kicks or..
@TylaDubya24 күн бұрын
Whistling did become really popular over the last few years. Whistles are kinda sick though. They sometimes just don't come through the mic well.

Can we specifically just leave out reactions from clout chasing beatboxers?
